he'll be on the hill all week. those visits with this defense of the polio vaccine and others. what sort of uphill climb do you think robert f. kennedy has here and how much of a role are vaccines going to play? >> i think it's worth stepping back and recognizing that we're debating, talking about the polio vaccine. as a political issue. that's how far away we have come from reality. yes, the polio vaccine was an amazing breakthrough. i don't think it's up for debate. apparently, it is. as for rfk, jr.'s climb, you know, two things are at play here. one is, of all the nominees that trump put forward, in a way, he is the most cherished politically by trump. trump views him as instrumental in building this political coalition, and that trump had wanted to connect, where a number of self-identifying democrats are in his coalition. so trump is willing to fight for this. at the same time, it's fair to say among the nominees, robert f. kennedy, jr., may have the most controversial statements and skeletons in the closet.

and that is what we're seeing on the hill right now with that wrestling over committee chairs.ook at the leadership of the democratic party, you know, it's basically looking at a collection of grandparents, isn't it? whereas you look at the republican party and it's not that, and donald trump every day is announcing a new person who's going to be head of this, ambassador of that, whatever. and because he's, you know, kind of focusing on people who are on tv and stuff, which we can talk about later, like, they all look very glossy and shiny, which is in contrast to what we're seeing from on the democrat side of things. and, i mean, we haven't really heard from kamala harris, have we? i mean, i'm sure she went away to nurse her wounds a bit, but as to where her position is in the party, she's not been very vocal about that. well, yeah, she had that speech that she delivered in maryland this week and, you know, delivered a kind of similar message to the one that she did after conceding the election. come back ready. ready to chart our| path to the future. and i'm curious to know,

first, a little hill speak translation, if you will.aying, i'll support him through the process, that's not her saying i'm suddenly now seeing the light and backing this nominee. no. she's instead saying, i am going to allow him to continue forward, let's do a public hearing. that's what many of us on the hill are reading into those comments because certainly ernst is a skeptic of hegseth's. the conversation around hegseth is both the policy piece, things like those very comments you showed at the top about not wanting women to serve in combat. there's the policy piece that's controversial about his nomination. and then the character developments, the questions about his drinking, the questions about his mismanagement of funds at veterans' organizations, the questions around that alleged sexual assault. all of those are in the character column. those are the other piece of the things that hegseth is dealing with that other nominees who are on the hill right now, like tulsi gabbard, kash patel, they have character questions. all these pe

it's not one that we frankly see very often on capitol hill. i was really struck by that as well. issues, without really gaining new ground. a couple of the things that we have heard, number one, the outgoing chairman, congressman mike mccaul from texas, he was very critical at the top of the hearing of secretary of state antony blinken saying that he had not appeared before the committee, specifically to discuss the withdrawal from afghanistan. blinken pushed back on that saying he has appeared more than a dozen times before congress, including taking a number of questions about afghanistan. but one issue that has come up again, and this is one that this committee specifically, house foreign affairs has really focused on is the notion that the bomber at abbey gate was identified by a group of marine snipers before the attack and could have been taken out, but, in fact, those marines were told not to engage. jose, that's something that was investigated several times by the u.s. military. the most recent report on that came out in april this year. and it found that, in fact, it was

ali, what's going on right now on capitol hill?this is a hearing that's gone on and off, vacillating between fiery and tense, but most of these members seeming to recognize that the sole witness before them is currently the head of the secret service, but was not the person at the helm of the organization at the time of these assassination attempts, specifically the one in butler. nevertheless, just in the last minute or two we did see a very fiery and explosive moment where congressman pat fallon and the acting secret service agent ronald rowe seemed to get into a shouting match. the gavel had to, hit -- but it was literally screaming between the man at the witness table and one of the wmakers on the dias. there is abject failure, regarding what happened in butler and regarding what happened or almost happened but thwarted in west palm beach. specifically with butler, the secret service director reiterating several of the key pieces that this committee and others who have done investigations into what went wrong have said in the p

we saw musk and ramaswamy on the hill yesterday speaking to lawmakers. i think something they're going to have to face is the starkness of what it takes to actually do some of these things. they're going to need cooperation from congress who, of course, has the power of the purse. but they believe they'll be able to make cuts through executive action. they have not answered straight questions about exactly what would be on the chopping block. for sure they have made clear they believe that there's too many federal workers. they want to see layoffs. they want to see people leaving the government. but some things that are really the biggest things on the ticket would be defense spending, entitlement programs, medicare, social security, but touching any of those thbe deeply unpopular. those are all -- have strong bipartisan support. so it's going to be interesting to see where they can actually find cuts because really everything left on the table does not really amount to much and not the goals they're trying to meet which is trillions of dollars in federa

he's up on capitol hill. what else are you hearing, manu?hat's the latest yeah, this is interesting because we have actually not heard much from speaker johnson over the last several days. >> he's been holed up in the speaker's suite trying to cut this deal, trying to appease donald trump's demands and giving his pitch there about why he thinks the bill should should be enacted. there were more changes than he made. seem. they took a bunch of provisions out of the bill. some democrats were upset about some of the research funding that was removed from it, and he downplayed the very significant additions to this bill, which would be to suspend the national debt limit until january 2027. remember, that is such a huge fight. typically, every time this comes up, this leads to a major battle in washington. republicans typically demand spending cuts to offset any increase of the national debt limit, and democrats typically are okay with that spending cuts because they say that we just need to pay for all the spending that we already did and avoid

let's turn now to cnn congressional correspondent lauren fox on capitol hill. so, lauren, how does this hesitation around this nomination compare to what you saw with matt gaetz there's still an openness to supporting pete hegseth and i think what you hear from a lot of republicans on capitol hill who have met with him is that pete hegseth was willing to answer a lot of their very difficult questions. >> this was the case for senator kevin cramer of north dakota, who had the last meeting yesterday with hegseth on capitol hill. he said that he point blank asked him what hegseth would do if at 3 a.m., he got a call, would he be ready to deal with that if he was leading the pentagon and, you know, cramer said he was really satisfied with the answer they got from hegseth, which was that he would be ready. then he'd be ready at three in the afternoon or any other hour in between. i also on my way over here, spoke with senator mike rounds, a republican from south dakota who had just met with hegseth today and said he could potentially see a situation where he backed
