back with me, politico's jake sherman and associated press white house reporter and msnbc political analyst jonathan lemire. jake, let me start with you for the hillitics of this. i take murkowski's point this ought not to be an issue, clearly it is. some of these bills are bipartisan. they've been written with people like lindsey graham and james lankford. what's the hangup here? >> first of all, let's take a step back. mark warner tried to submit a bill under unanimous consent. brought a bill and said let's pass that now. that, talking about how things in washington works, that is not how congress works. there's no chance that nobody was going to stand up and block that. that's not the way to get this done. number two, it does appear there is some sort of compromise that could be had here since kevin mccarthy, the house minority leader said in a press conference in response to your questions, said that he is for an election security bill and would republicans would support it. so i do think there's a way to get through this. but, listen, obviously the politics are tricky for trump because he believes that any effort to secure the election based
