i add to that that i have mad love for the hispanic community right now. the community in this country last year flexed more than the hispanic vote. they flexed. [applause] i think that if you do not like the way things are going, you have to raise uppe. as we all know, politics is not a spectator sport. you have to get involved in the process. the hispanic community did that last year, yet there were not a lot of victories for all that. what happened in 2011, for all the energy and activism generated last year, as this campaign is about to kick up for the white house in a few months? >> i will talk about where we see our country going. i have to side with maria. i do not think america was great. i think we are seeing is a realignment we saw during the great depression. we are seeing it now during the great recession. we have new industries, a new type of immigrant, and also competing on a global scale again. what happens and the lessons we learned during the great depression was that america learned to take care of our own, our poor, women, and children.

i will give you an example in terms of the hispanic population.have a residential program where meals are prepared by home, you know. it's not a cafeteria meals that we prepare, but we have cooks who are sensitive to the culture. and that really brings home to a particular person who is in recovery and engagements. so, so important for recovery to be culture sensitive and ingredients that enhance recovery and the support in our environment of treatment. and i'm glad you mentioned the whole issue of culture sensitive. i want to go back to dr. clark. what does culture sensitive mean? if someone is listening to this show, what does it mean to be culture sensitive? we've heard from our speakers addressing the cultural differences and the culture sensitivity means that the clinician particular or the recovery dynamic recognizes that a person's life experiences have to be taken into consideration, so the idioms, the beliefs, the perceptions, the mores, all of those things. so you may make an assumption based on your own culture that has nothing to do wi

in 1989, the first hispanic woman to serve in congress. she is now beginning her 12th term in office representing florida's 18th congressional district. that says it all. on top of that, she is the chair of the house committee on foreign affairs in the 112th congress. she is the first hispanic woman to ever lead that committee. that is a huge honor. [applause] she serves on the chci advisory board. also tonight, you will hear from representatives charlie gonzales. [applause] the new chair of chci --we could not have picked better. he is the leading voice on issues regarding the senses. he was first elected to the house of representatives in 1998 representing the 10th congressional district in san antonio. he is beginning his seventh term in the one hand while congress. he comes from a strong and politically active bloodline. his father was henry gonzales. he represented the same district for 37 years. in the 111th congress, he served on the house energy and commerce committee, the judicial committee and the house administration committee.

the same thing for american indian, alaska natives, hispanics, african americans, and the same thing would be applicable to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. the key issue is of cultural competence and that is the thing that if indeed you know you've got a diverse population, you want your practitioners, your facilitators to be aware of some of these unique issues. and moving prior to the person even getting a problem as we address again the whole issue of prevention, are there some idiosyncrasies, going back to that word, of special populations that folks need to be aware of, you know, in terms of the viewership, in terms of what the types of programs that they get their messaging from. even the whole notion, as you were mentioning, john, of using the individuals that are in recovery to go out in the community, right? i think you were mentioning that. we have an amends part of our program where people make amends. that can commonly look like distributing bags of lunches to homeless populations. and that's when prevention comes in because that person receiving that lunch bag f

there has been one black state, one hispanic, they are not black. they are hispanic districts.in houston area, fastest growing area right outside of my district. that was black guy who ran for state house seat. we now chairs the martin luther king committee. he didn't win. but he put the incumbent, and he was frustrated and didn't run. hispanic lawyer jumped up. he won the seat. the african-american beat her. we have to have a closed door discussion. we can't always control the general persons agreements. i say we try to have the dialogue on nafta on the federal level. the issues of labor unions being concerned by job. in my point of the country where it was important. the african-american members of congress and african-american politicians restrained themselves from getting out too far that they were against that issue because they knew it was important to hispanics. as would be the case if it was south africa on the border with texas instead of mexico. i think at least in my backyard, we try internally to have those discussions. and sometimes people just have a bad attitude.
