in honor of hispanic heritage month, coca-cola released an ad to celebrate the many hispanic family names melendez. the ad has been playing extensively on social media and now it's getting criticism from some in the hispanic community who call the marketing campaign -- listen to this -- "hispandering." >> garcia's my family name, and there's a legacy and heritage that comes with a name. >> i love the name rodriguez. when i consider my name, i think of my father. >> coca-cola made this short film to highlight a few hispanic families and the pride they share towards their last names. then a bright red coca-cola truck comes into the neighborhood handing out coke cans, each one displaying a hispanic last name. >> yeah, we call it "hispandering." >> hispanic groups like the online blog latino rebels say coke goes too far, linking pride to a soft drink during hispanic heritage month. >> more and more, it's turning into some extended cinco de mayo marketing free-for-all, and, you know, people see through that. >> ha ha! reyes! >> these particular coke cans used only in this ad also come with a t

it gives our youth, hispanic and not hispanic, an opportunity to seize the opportunity that's in frontf them. since there is such a shortage of engineers, they should capitalize on that and study the stem related subjects. yeah, that's the advice that i would give as well. damian: you know, and sometimes corporations, they'll reach outside of their own headquarters when they need advice. and how do we target the african-american community? how do we target the latino community? is the focus of your group maybe to be that resource for your administration to say, "well, we don't have to go outside. we can go to latin@ and see what we need to do to maybe strategize and improve things"? jo: yeah, there's been a ton of strategic planning with our diversity and recruiting teams where we support them. they ask us, "well, you know, what groups did you guys use as resources? what did you guys do to get to the position that you're in today?" and we like to vocalize to our leadership team what we've done in the past and what we've seen has driven results, so we often do meet with them to discuss

clearly, this fella believes that he can get to the white house without the hispanic vote. we're about to see whether that's the case or not. i'd rather talk about people who matter and people who actually have a shot at becoming the president of the united states and who take this process as seriously as it should be taken. >> who counts in that category to your mind? >> you know, i think that we're blessed to have a variety of candidates on both sides of the aisle. you know, on the republican side i've had the pleasure of spending time with john kasich, with -- certainly with jeb bush, who was with us about three weeks ago. on the democratic side i've now had the pleasure of dealing and talking at length with the three leading candidates, with bernie sanders, with martin o'malley, and today as you know with secretary clinton. and i'm enthused by the level of interest and the willingness to engage america's burgeoning hispanic community on both sides of the aisle. >> do you agree with -- >> and so i think -- >> sorry. continue. >> i'm sorry, go ahead. and so i'm very happy

i'd rather move on to people who i believe really do take the hispanic community for what it is. it's something that's wonderful, that is a living embodiment of the american dream. i'd rather talk about candidates who take this process and the presidency as seriously as it should be taken and i don't believe that candidate does. >> no candidate can seriously feel that they would do well in the general election without dealing in a very concrete way with the hispanic community and vote. >> again, reverend, you're absolutely right, and the reality of it is, sir, we have a responsibility, the hispanic community is part of the solution here and we need to stand firm and not commit our vote to any one candidate. we've been to this rodeo before where promises have been made to the community, only to be disillusioned in the long run. what i'm hoping is that a combination of resolve and responsibility on behalf of the hispanic community and acknowledgment and action on behalf of the candidates will lead to the final solution we need to see. we have much to learn from the african-american

bernie sanders is doing a ton of outreach with hispanic voters, with hispanic organizations.national hispanic leadership. martin o'malley spoke the dream act of maryland and he speaks about his plans for latino voters that will help them live a better life. so, i think democrats are on a very, very strong position with hispanic voters. let's not forget after 2012, republicans were in a tremendous hole. in fact, their own report said they had to do much better with hispanic voters. what do they do instead of listening to that? they do the complete opposite. so, when their front-runners are xenophobic, anti-immigrant, they continue with that rhetoric and no other candidate seems to stand up to that, i think democrats are going to do very well with hispanics. >> sally, i see you shaking your head. >> can i applaud? >> i want to talk about this key endorsement sanders just got. hillary clinton has more than 100 democratic endorsements in congress. so the support of sanders lead to a trickle down effect in his favor? >> yeah, i agree with everything maria said. i would put it a li

if you are hispanic, real unemployment is 36%.at this means is that we have millions of young people in this country, people who want to leave their homes, start a career, make some money, become independent, become adults, and yet they have no jobs and they have no education. and if anybody in this room things that it is a coincidence that when we have 5.5 million young people who are not in school and are not working, while at the same time we have more people in jail than any other country on earth, if you think that's a coincidence, you would be sorely mistaken. in my view it makes a lot more sense to invest in education, invest in jobs, rather than in jails and incarceration. i have a tremendous amount of respect for the leadership of the congressional hispanic caucus. this invaluable institute. i want to acknowledge some of the extraordinary young people in chci whose stories are exactly what it means to be an american, and is what this battle for immigration and citizenship are really all about. from my home state of maryland, where is he?
