b cell non-hodgkin's lymphoma what kind of treatment is available?hear cancer and everyone becomes frightened but how advanced are we now in treating this form of cancer? >> well, we are really very advanced. there are some wonderful therapies that we have that have been tried and true over the last ten years or so. one of the biggest treatments in treating b non-hodgkin's lymphoma is a targeted antibody therapy against the specific malignant b cells and has really given patients a lot of hope for a cure and long-term survival after treatment with this therapy. >> more about that, doctor. because everyone is wondering his chances and his odds. that was addressed at the press conference, too, to some extent, because no one knows, as you have mentioned earlier every case is different. but the fact that this had spread so much around his body discovered shaving kind of around his adam's apple and found several lumps just in his neck area alone and the armpit, the groin area and back, too. the fact it spread this far, what does that tell you? >> well it

he was diagnosed with type b non-hodgkins lymphoma. this is what we can tell you about the disease. it atags the immune system as far symptoms go. they have enlarged lymph node, shortage of breath, fatigue, night sweat. i asked the governor how he is feeling today. he said he is feeling pretty good. governor larry hogan says he felt no symptoms but discovered a lump in his neck. testing over the subsequent days in the last week revealed he has type b non-hodgkins lymphoma, a kenner is -- cancer of the immune system and is in at least stage three, maybe stage four. governor hogan: i have learned in the past few days that this cancer is very advanced. very aggressive. brad: the governor grew emotional when talk about telling his family over the father's day weekend. governor hogan: i was reminded how blessed and lucky i brad: he will now begin a chemotherapy battle that will last 18 weeks, a battle his doctors tell him will be like going to hell and back. >> most likely i will lose my hair. you won't have the beautiful gray locks. i may trim down a little bit. but i won't stop working

he says it -- non-hodgkin's lymphoma. he says is t is treatable and he -- it is treatable and he is planning to work through chemotherapy and radiation. >> this cancer is very aggressive but also responds very well to chemotherapy treatment. the best news is that my odds of getting through this and beating this are much, much better than the odds i had of beating anthony brown to become the 62nd governor of maryland. when it comes to hodgkins lymphoma it's a bimodal age. you don't see anything until like around 55, 60. with this non-hodgkins usually as you get older the risk becomes higher. you see this usually over the age of 60, so if you have a family history, if you've been exposed to agent orange, et cetera or benzine, absolutely go to your doctor and have it check. very good question. >> i want to state the obvious which is if it's getting bigger, get it seen. scan yourself for the lymph nodes. don't be embarrassed. we talked last week how men never go to the dock for and david has started the smaed challenge which is to get women to get men to go to the doctor. men, if you have one of these things, go to the doctor. >> don't ignore it. >> that's right. >> ves a very good point that marc is bringing up. just don't ignore it because as julie mentioned you catch it early. cure is way up there. >> certainly our thoughts and our prayers are with the governor that he has a full recovery and that he's caught this in time. >>> do you feel tired and mood

aggressive non-hodgkins lymphoma. there are many types. the most common would be diffuse large b-cell. i'll comment on that because that makes 25-30% of the diffuse large b-cells and it kind of fits what is being described in his case. but by no means is it what he has. most people with that lymphoma is very aggressive and it can come on quickly and be very responsive to treatment and chemotherapy. which does involve aggressive chemotherapy in a combination of the i.v. chemotherapy and a dose of steroids to help the cancer. and targeted immune agents most notably probably medication called ritoximath. this is given normally on a three-week cycle. so every 21 days you get another dose of chemotherapy. and people can generally if they take off the day of chemo and you are getting the treatment in that day. it can be very tolerable. you can get fatigue with it and nausea, vomiting. you can get hair loss and nervous damage done to the small nerves and the fingers and the toes. but we have many medications to control some of the side effects no
