but holly -- this is holly tucker. and holly majored in french and political science at indiana university and then she went on to earn her ph.d. at the university of wisconsin-madison. currently she's a professor of both french and the history of medicine at vanderbilt university. she teaches courses on history of early medicine, medicine and literature as well as other courses on early french literature and culture. i was first introduced to holly -- i feel like i know her but i was introduced to her -- this is our first time meeting by subscribing to her blog and i've been a fan of hers. i would encourage to you google it and it would come first thing up. it's an interesting blog. they call it a community for curious minds who love history. its odd stories and good reads. it started out as an area where she and her students could communicate and now it's really grown. so that actually a lot of scholars and writers are sending books to her and her students review them so i always find out about a lot of very interest

holly morris is live with an update. holly? >> reporter: good morning, tony. it was one of those things where people felt the need to do something and that something was this spontaneous celebration outside of the white house. take a look at these pictures. this was the scene here last night. much like they were describing there in new york at ground zero. thousands took to the streets. they were chanting usa, they were singing god bless america. they came here even before the president had addressed the nation because the news had leaked out that osama bin laden had indeed been killed. many said it was important for them to be here at the white house. it was important for them to cheer loudly because they wanted the president to hear for himself their joy and elation at the news. of course this morning the crowds are much less and it's dwindled a little bit but the people that kim -- that came out this morning are wanting to celebrate justice long overdue. >> it shows the world that we can get rid of bad people like that and that was -- that was just an aweso

holly. >> reporter: good morning, dave. about 600 residents here in vicksburg have been evacuated.en roads and streets in and out of the city have been closed in preparation for when the mississippi river crests next thursday. it hasn't crested yet but we are already five feet above flood stage. i want to show you what that looks like right now. this is a train depot. it's not active. the water is almost halfway up the first floor. they have built temporary levies. you can see the woodpile ons to the left of the buildings. it's pretty dry on the other side but so far so good. people here are crossing their fingers. about 45 businesses have closed, two casinos have closed, two casinos are watching and waiting to close. >> holly, before you go. this could be a disaster for the people further south of there. how are they preparing for what may hit them? >> yeah. they are preparing by opening up spillways to divert some of the water in the mississippi. the bonnie care spillways they have opened areas there. they are hoping to redirect that water into the gulf of mexico. emergency manag

. >>> i'm holly gorani in for don lemon today. you are in the cnn newsroom. well, breaking news out of st. louis this mother's day. an unruly passenger aboard a continental flight is blamed for causing the plane to divert to st. louis. it had taken off from houston and was originally headed to chicago. according to airport officials in st. louis the passenger tried to open the forward exit while the plane was in the air. the passenger was restrained and the plane eventually landed safely. at this time all we know is a male passenger was taken off the plane and other passengers resumed their flight. and a second airliner also had to be diverted today. a note found aboard a delta flight triggered a security scare. flight 1706 was en route from detroit to san diego when a flight attendant discovered a sis pishs note in the restroom. the plane landed in albuquerque. it spenl several hours in a remote area while the luggage was screened and passengers were interviewed. the security sweep of the plane found nothing and the plane was cleared to fly out to san diego.

holly firfir has more from mississippi. >> reporter: good morning.unty which is about 30 miles south of memphis. the river was cresting there yesterday. and the river here is cresting right now. >>> reporter: while the crest of the mississippi has moved past member first, the water and the danger are rising down river as the swollen river continues to flow south. the mississippi has not reached levels like this since the historic floods of 1927. officials are preparing for the worst. >> we have got moving search- and-rescue teams, department of wildlife and fisheries leading the effort positioning assets to the northern part of the state. >> reporter: louisiana has mobilized 500 national guard troops and 21 parishes have made emergency declarations in response to the threat n mississippi about 600 people have been evacuated in the town of tunica where the river cinching towards its 48-foot crest. >> it is devastating. it's painful to watch the slow rise of the water. we can't start the recovery and you can't start the healing process until the water

holly is in sixberg, mississippi this morning where it's already too late for many houses. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, pam. yeah, i'm standing in yet another parking lot here along the mississippi river. we are in slicksberg. the water is already close to five feet above flood stage here. that has many people concerned because the water here is not supposed to crest until next thursday. continuing it relentless flow south. in louisiana where memories of the floods caused by hurricane katrina are still fresh, officials are faced with a difficult decision. opening the spillway could spare baton rouge and new orleans from damage, but with flood populated areas in the basin. >> our hearts go out to everybody downstream. this is monument tailwater. never been seen before. >> reporter: the spillway with open if the river's flow reaches 1.5 million feet of water per cubic second. it's currently at 1.6. the governor is advising people to plan ahead. >> that's what i'm advising. act if the spillway -- act as if that decision was coming be prepared. i don't want people w
