peter hotez.director for the center of vaccine development at the texas children's hospital. do i need antibodies once i catch covid to protect myself from future infections? is another way -- is there another way for the body to protect it? dr. hotez: a virus neutralizing antibody is extremely important, especially in the immediate aftermath of getting vaccinated. there seems to be a protection associated with this. so this is important. but there are other immune responses in terms of t cells. that's why we are looking -- that's why looking at viral neutralizing antibodies alone is not sufficient. that modernity have higher -- moderna may have higher viral neutralizing antibodies by two are threefold, i don't think too much about that because that's a modest difference. data came out last week showing that after your third immunization with pfizer, the antibodies increased 30 fold to 40 fold. alix: how quickly do you think we will realistically get a booster shot and how quickly do you think we

hotez is right. we were actually briefed on this from day one when they did the first actual vaccine briefing inside the white house. i remember this vividly, and they said there might be the possibility for boosters needed in the future even when the vaccine was developed because the coronavirus evolves. it is an evolving virus. this is kind of how this virus works. so he was told that, vice president pence was told this. so this should not be a shock to either of them and especially to donald trump, and so he knows better. >> olivia, i have to ask the question. i know i've asked you this before and i'm going to ask again. dr. hotez mentioned trump would have been in briefings. you just mentioned there are these meetings where these things were discussed. did donald trump ever pay attention to any of the science or any of the dill tas in any meeting you saw him in or heard about him attending? >> so this is a why this is so frustrating to watch. donald trump paid attention, he understood the science

toyota hotez is the director of this vaccine development at the children's hospital. he's the dean of tropical medicine, baylor college of medicine, and he's the author of preventing the next pandemic. olivia troye's former adviser to vice president mike pence, she is now director of the republican accountability project. thank you both for joining me this evening. doctor hotez, let me start with you, tell me about this new booster shot that trump thinks is a scam. why do we need it and why are we finding out about it now? >> mattie, everyone of us thought since day one that this would be a three dose vaccine, and i can imagine that if the president were in meetings back in 2020, he would have realized that as well. and the reason is this, those clinical trials were done with vaccines, but the pfizer and moderna vaccine, each spaced three and four weeks apart, respectively. we did that because there was an urgency, we were losing 3000 american lives per day. we had to get any body responses, virus neutralizing responses into peoples bodies as fast as possible. and we

hotez, your thoughts on mask mandates but also what dr. patel is talking about was happening in states like florida where the governor is going out of his way to prevent local officials from doing what they see is in the best interests of the people who live in their cities and towns. >> yeah, that's absolutely right, jonathan. this is the scary part now. we are seeing a very worrisome surge across the southern states, and it's going in a giant shape of a "u" starting in missouri, down to arkansas, louisiana, cutting across east into florida and then going up into the carolinas. and it has a different flavor from the surge that we saw last summer. it's true that we have a lot more older americans who are vaccinated, so the deaths are nothing like what we saw before. but what we're seeing in its place is lots and lots of young people getting sick. and lots of hospitalizations for young people. we're even starting to see now pediatric intensive care unit admissions. i don't think this virus is selectively targeting kids, i just think pretty

hotez, seeing more cases? and i guess, the question is why? is the delta variant fundamentally more dangerous to children? >> so, let me start by saying that the numbers of cases in our hospitals in children and our children's hospitals are completely overwhelmed. the local hospital here has 116% occupancy for covid. that is mind boggling. our pediatricians, the nursing, the staff are exhausted. and the -- the children are suffering and it is absolutely devastating. yes, this delta variant is far more aggressive. it, also, carries a special mutation that alters cells it gets into. so the cells sort of melt into each other, and form a s-- this makes it much harder for the immune system to tackle that virus. so we are dealing with a virus that is far more contagious. that we are seeing fully-vaccinated people able to -- to askew just as much as virus particles as unvaccinated. thank goodness, don't end up in the hospital, usually. but they are sick. our children are very much affected. we've never seen numbers like this, before. and we really ne

hotez, welcome back. let's start here. the growing percentage of children who are the new case of covid, we're hearing it anecdotally and seeing it statistically. is that because most kids are not eligible for the vaccine, or is there some increased susceptibility that we're seeing in children? >> yeah, well, we don't really know, victor. you know, i think it's probably likely that we're dealing with the fact that -- we're dealing with the fact that many of these kids are getting infected because they're swept up. because so many individuals are becoming infected. w remember, delta is basically picking off anyone who hasn't been vaccinated to date. i don't think right now the delta variant is targeting kids, i just think they're getting swept up in this firestorm of delta covid-19. and i think, you know, you brought up a very important point, which is, we don't have the data nationally on what's happening, especially in the low vaccination rates in the south, in terms of pediatric icu admissions. anecdotally, it is looking

peter hotez. doctors, thank you so much. i appreciate it. i'm going to start with you, dr. hotez. this is big news. people have been wondering. people have been asking me, are we going to get a third shot? when are we going to know about a third shot? some americans are already coming up to their eight-month shot period, right? so what does this mean for them now? >> so, don, this really follows a trend that we've been following out of israel, and there was also a recent mayo clinic study that's been showing what looks like waning immunity after six, seven, eight months. for a while, we didn't know if it was true, waning immunity or whether there was a specific issue around the delta variant or maybe a combination of the two. it looks like there is indeed waning immunity, especially in older populations. now i think the game-changer is not only is it waning immunity against infection, it had gone down to as low as 40%, 45%, 50% protection against infection, but it was still holding up against hospitalizations. now we're starting to see more breakthrough hospitalizations, and i thi

hotez. they have increased to levels not seen since the height of the pandemic. can parents protect kids not eligible for the vaccine from the virus? >> alex, it is about to get worse because you remember some of the big districts like houston independent school district, that opens on monday. i hate to say it but it is the warm-up act for what will be following in the next few years. you know, here is what has to happen but, unfortunately, it is not. you know, when you are in the middle of a raging epidemic like this across the southern united states, there's no -- there's no margin for error. that means that everyone who walks into a school has to have a mask on except perhaps some of the special needs kids who can't. everyone has to have a mask on, the students, any parents visiting, bus drivers, school staff, kids, of course, and then the other thing that no one is talking about is everybody over the age of 12 has to be vaccinated. there's no other way around it. we have to have vaccine mandates and we haven't even begun to scratch the surface on that and tha

peter hotez, i apropos of the first conversation this evening, one of the conversations that we have there were always anti-vaxxers. always people concerned about this. but you and i both shared of you, we were together the day the vaccines rolled out -- and we both shared a view, that as more people got the vaccine, the hesitancy would drop. you are not prepared to be against republican governors and other political people who had aligned with anti-vaxxers. >> i think this is the game-changer, ali, that for some reason the republican party or the extreme right decided to adopt an anti-vaccine and anti-science platform. it started in 2015 in texas with the republican tea party, and we started to see anti-vaccine political action committees under the banner of medical freedom. but now it's become mainstream across parts of the gop. and you are seeing these terms of freedom, health freedom, medical freedom, used all the time. when in fact it's denying freedom to many parents now, who are afraid to send their kids to school, because not enough kids are masked or vaccinated. >> superinte

hotez, you're in houston. we heard the frightening story of an 11-month-old covid patient who had to be flown 150 miles away due to lack of hospital space in houston. i think that illustrates the point very clearly right now. what is the situation in these hospitals where you are right now? >> well, the texas medical center, as head of the texas children's hospital always says to me, the texas medical center has a lot of heft. we have the beds. it's a matter of all of the nursing staff across the different hospitals in the state of texas. a lot of nurses and hospital staff are exhausted too and have left their post over the last year and a half. so this is another thing to keep in mind. it's not just the beds, it's the trained people that know how to work the respirators and very sophisticated equipment as patients get sicker and sicker. >> right. if you overwhelm the hospitals, not only do you run out of space potentially but you also run out of workers to take care of those patients. >> and, jim, by the way,

hotez. >> yeah, that's right.specially if we can get some school mandates in place that will be game changing. i think, john the other piece to this that not many are talking about, this is an extraordinary validation of the work of the u.s. food and drug administration. they worked so hard last year when we were in dire straits. 3,000 americans losing their lives everyday to roll that vaccine out through emergency use and do everything humanly possible to approximate the full approval process through the eua and they did it. and the fact now that we're moving to full approval is an extraordinary statement about how hard people at fda really work to make this happen. you know, we like to throw stones at our government agencies. this is one time where things went really well. >> and i have to say, not a moment too soon. especially where you are. dr. hotez, along the gulf coast where the hospitals are all just filling up with covid patients, almost all of them unvaccinated. hopefully this can help turn things around

peter hotez. dr. hotez, i want to get your reaction to this breaking news.tending the mask mandate on planes and trains until mid-january. why not a vaccine mandate? would that not be a more science-based approach if we're going to start requiring, keep requiring people to do things to be on the nation's planes and rails? >> yeah, ideally both. for masks we're at a screaming level of virus transmission in the united states. we're pushing up to 150,000 new cases a day. we'll soon probably be up to 200,000 new cases a day. if you look at the slope, that's practically vertical. in terms of new cases it looks as bad as last january and february. i would certainly prefer a vaccination mandate. i think that's been a tougher nut to crack. but that would be ideal as well. but that's been fraught with a lot of political difficulty. >> let's be honest, it's not the science that's precluding a vaccine mandate for planes and trains. it's the politics. >> that's right. this is all politics. and it's self-defeating politics because right now when you have a virus that's t

hotez. >> yeah.from all my years going up against the anti-vaccine movement that there would be a problem. what i didn't expect was this wholesale adoption of the anti-vaccine movement and anti-science by the political right where you have members of the -- elected members of the united states congress openly espousing anti-vaccine, anti-science conspiracy views, where you would have the conservative news outlets campaigning on an anti-science agenda. that's the part that has been so troubling. and look at the consequences. you know, that number you flashed up, ali, 97 per 100,000, that is probably the highest rate of covid-19 in the world right now. louisiana, florida are the worst affected. if louisiana and florida were countries, they would be the worst affected countries in the world, right up there with boswana, that is getting hit really hard. that's how terrible this is. and this is just the beginning, ali, because schools haven't opened yet. and they're about to do that next week in louisiana

hotez. we have several viewer questions.s back it was advised if two people were vaccinated, they could get-togethers with reasonable safety indoors without a mask. now four months later with delta, is that the same advice? >> yeah, it's probably safer if you still continue to wear a mask and here is why, pamela. you know, against the original u.k. variant, the vaccines were also halting asymptomatic transmission almost as well. 90% reduction so people were not shedding virus. now with this delta variant, protection against infection seems to be going down to 40 to 50% in terms so that you could be with someone who has asymptomatic infection and shedding virus. although, it appears that such people only are shedding virus for a much shorter time, couple days. it's still unvaccinated people who are shedding most of the virus and causing most of the transmission but to be safe, it's probably better to now mask if you're with somebody you don't know even if you're both vaccinated. >> i'm curious on that note. there is a lot of

peter hotez. dr. hotez, thank you for being here.producers just told me as we were going into this segment during the break that now in the state of texas, the governor there is asking for out of state health care professionals to come to the state to help with the covid crisis and is asking hospitals to voluntarily postpone elective surgeries. so he won't do anything to stop the vaccine. he literally is fiddling while texas burns with covid. but now he wants outside help and people to postpone their elective surgeries. your thoughts? >> well, i think to the first part of what you were talking about, joy, you were spot on. who's looking out for the children in the south? we are having this massive surge of covid-19 across the south. it's like nothing we've ever seen of the and we've never seen children's hospital wards fill up with covid before. we've never seen pediatric intensive care units get overwhelmed with covid cases. we've seen icus of course and that's been the great tragedy in this country around covid-19, but not pediatri

hotez, great to you you back on the "news hour."i mentioned, only a third of kids between 12 and 15have been vaccinated thus far. does that worry you? what is your sense about that? >> doctor: here is why it really worries me because that number nationally only tells a part of the story because, in fact, those numbers are far lower down here in the south. so if you look at, for instance, the 12 to 17-yeaolds, the numbers are about a third that of the northeast. and so while in states like vermont and massachusetts, new england states, mid-atlantic states, you're doing pretty well in terms of vaccinating most of the adults and adolescents. down here in the sou, adolescents are unvaccinated for all practical purposes, and that's why you're seeing as delta variant is raging through the south, so many young people, including kids, get hospitalized. so figuring out how to correct those regional differences will be really important. >> brangham: what is your sense about that? do you have a good lever we can pull to help get those numbers

peter hotez from texas children's hospital. good to see you again, doctor.es this polling from the kaiser family foundation tell you? >> well, i think it's really important to look at when that survey was done. i don't think it was done very long ago. to me it looks like it was encompassing the last two weeks of july. you might say, well, what's changed? what's changed is now parents are fully understanding the public health impact of the delta variant. they are now learning if they're staying in touch with the news, the big massive surge in pediatric hospital admissions, pediatric intensive care unit admissions. that's all come to light really in the last two weeks. so i'm guessing, purely a guess, that if we were to repeat that survey now, we would start to see some shifts and parents would realize how serious this delta is. the old narrative out there was just worry about older individuals, the kids and young people will do fine. it's simply not true. that's the reality. now we're dealing with the fact that schools are opening here in the south during the

peter hotez, the director for vaccine development at texas children's hospital.nd, doctor, when kelly o'donnell and i were confirming the reporting by "the new york times" that biden administration was going to recommend the third dose, i was told that jury was still out for the folks who got the j&j shot. data is not quite done yet. they're not done assessing it. but for folks who got the moderna and pfizer vaccines, yeah, the third shot was recommended. what is the data behind all of this? and have we zeroed in on how long vaccines are effective? >> i think it's important to remember if you remember back in january, december, january when these vaccines were first rolled out, we were at a terrible place. we were losing 3,000 american lives every day. there was the urgency to vaccinate the people as quickly as possible. the phase three were two to three weeks apart. en that was done for expediency. but for long term durability of protection, a boost that comes three weeks of after the first immunization is not great at doing that. and so when we saw what was goi

peter hotez dean at baylor college of medicine. he also is the author of the book, preventing the next pandemic. doctor, good morning, it's great to have you with us. let's start with the booster, something you and other experts have said was coming. what have we learned about this virus and vaccine that requires a booster shot at this point? >> what we're seeing, willie, is a decline in effectiveness of the vaccine and a lot of the studies out of israel, one out of the mayo clinic showing against infection the effectiveness of the vaccine has gone down from 90% to 40 to 50%. so far keeping up well in terms of keeping people out of the hospital but i think the worry is that with that decline from 90 to 40%, which is a significant decline, that's the tip of the spear and we'll start seeing a precipitous rise in hospitalizations among vaccinated individuals. we're hearing anecdotes from physicians that 10, 20% of their hospitalized patients are vaccinated. so it's not too surprising, given the fact when we rolled out these vaccines t

peter hotez. >> this is starting to look really ominous in the south where i am. we're -- now if you look at the rates of transmission in florida and louisiana, they're actually probably the highest in the world. that's how badly things have gotten out of hands. >> the skeencenes at the hospit are reminiscent of the early days. they're quickly running out of hospital beds. one hospital in mississippi putting beds in parking spaces setting up a tent in a parking lot. >>> there's a new fallout in afghanistan. the taliban is closing in on kabul and the pentagon is sending more than 3,000 troops there to help evacuate americans caught in that unrest. >> in a speech this morning afghanistan's president saying he's trying to avoid further displacement and instability. the taliban is making full use of american military equipment they seized from afghan forces or that withdrawing american troops left behind. >> they granted our clarissa ward exclusive access to a former u.s. base that they now hold and it's raising some really disturbing questions about what america achi

peter hotez, infectious disease expert in houston, says he's concerned there will be a back to school tragedy in the south and is suggesting mask mandates for all students and vaccine mandates for children 12 to 17 years old. what do you want schools and parents to do to keep children safe? >> yeah. one thing i would say to parents is that you have a choice. there may not be a mandate in place, but you have a choice and can send your child to school with a mask on. you have a choice and you can get vaccinated, knowing that getting vaccinated helps protect you, but it also helps protect your children and others who may not be able to get vaccinated now or who may have an immune problem where the vaccine isn't as effective as you would like to see. i hope that we create space to allow governors to make changes in what they're doing. it's great to see the governor in arkansas trying to make a change there in terms of mandates, but i think that a lot of the decisions we're seeing have less to do with the science of the impact on children and more to do with the politics of, well, if publi

hotez said, it is also possible this third dose will actually create a much longer lasting immunity. so i think this should be both reassuring and underscore the need for folks in this country who have not been vaccinated to start the process now. get your first shot now. and i think this has to, this doesn't have to be a very complicated process. everyone in this country who has been vaccinated has received a vaccine card. and the process is going to be simple. we've already done the sort of, we've gone through the steps to triage people by risk earlier in the year. so the people who will come up first eight months after their second dose are either the elderly or health care providers. it's interesting. the timing of eight months is interesting. this gives the fda time to approve the vaccines for booster doses, because the first people who will be available won't be available, won't be ready for their shot until about the first week in september now. because third shots, the three-week shot after the first pfizer dose wasn't administered in this country until the first week of janu

peter hotez, a codirector of the texas children's hospital for vaccine development.. this preprint study shows that vaccine efficacy is getting worse in july -- got worse in july. moderna's efficacy by the end of july had fallen to 76%. pfizer's dropped to 42%. when you see this study tell me what you think what stands out to you? >> well, the most important piece to this, don, is the fact that there's still the protection of hospitalizations and deaths is still there. so that's the single most important component and the one to keep in mind. if you actually look at the data, there's a bit of a drop off in the last month with the pfizer vaccine, but it's hard to know how statistically relevant that's going to be. what worries me is the fact that in israel and elsewhere we're seeing similar things. so it's not just the study. i think what we're starting to see now is the decline in preventing asymptomatic transmission. and we have three or four studies showing it's going down to 50% or 40% and that's concerning. the good news if you got the pfizer biontech vaccine lik

hotez, we learned yesterday, florida had an all time high for the pandemic.t does that mean for the country and could we surpass the winter surge? it's stunning. >> yeah, no, this is starting to look really ominous in the south where i am. now if you look at rates of transmission in florida and louisiana, they're actually probably the highest in the world. we're running neck and neck with botswana with the rate of transmission. there is a screaming level of transmission across the southern states right now and now we're starting to see this happening among younger age groups. so medium age and some of the hospitals here in the south, there is people in their 30s. we're seeing a lot of pediatriced a missions and icu admissions, the scary part is all of this is happening before schools open. schools are just opening now. i worry that will be an accelerant. and the problem is a lot of the executive leaders of these red states, southern states, are not going to replace policies to protect the kids. they've not mandated masks or vaccines, i don't see how it will g
