the house republicans -- the new house republicans led by kevin mccarthy, but you know certain people him in with a very thin margin, they are saying they want massive spending cuts. this is a bill to pay for things that have been obligated, but they want to attach it to this must-pass bill. without the bill passing, at some point this summer, the u.s. government for the first time in history would default. what would be the effects of that? >> yeah. that would be economically catastrophic. we have had government shutdowns before. that's a small portion of the government stopping. this would be effectively a default. it could raise our borrowing costs for decades to come, which would ironically actually raise our government spending and raise our debt. you said the two sides couldn't be further apart. it's not really two sides here. this is a simple thing that congress needs to do. they have done it over and over again, democrats did it for president trump. so it's the house republicans that need to get their act together, pass this. then they can have a negotiation on spending bills.

then suddenly this morning, at 8:00 a.m., he put out that statement urging house republicans to get in line behind mccarthy and avoid the embarrassing defeat. i think one of the big tests of trump's power within the house, however, is whether that moves the needle at all. there's not been any indication that those 20 house republicans who voted against mccarthy for speaker have changed their mind because donald trump has told them to do so. >> as they take their seats after the pledge of allegiance. >> a port of order a quorum is not present. the chair will count. >> roll call. they have to count all of the members, brendan buck. this could take a bit. >> yeah. they did a quorum call to start yesterday. that doesn't require everybody saying their name like we saw during the vote. there are electronic voting devices behind the seats there. they will ask them to put their card in and note that they are present. to me, this strikes me as a delay mechanism. they are trying to figure out what to do. they could have rolled into having a vote. i think that was the next order of business. she

and following up on their promise, the house judiciary committee now controlled by the new republican majority has launched an investigation of their own into biden's potential mishandling of classified documents. including one marked with the highest level of classification. so back with me this hour, white house correspondent allie raffa. ali, welcome back in. what has been the reaction from the white house and where are we headed from here? >> yes, cory reaction from the white house has really been minimal at best since the discovery of these classified documents. you have president biden yesterday ignoring and shouting questions from reporters. twice at the white house and then for three days in a row this week, press secretary kareen jean pierre referred most of our questions about this topic to the justice department, the special counsel's office. she read statements from the white house counsel's office and reaction to the mishandling of these classified documents earlier this week. that is really essentially the posture that the white house has had since this was discovered. t

white house statement comes as both the republican led house judiciary committees opened investigations. joining us now, congressional reporter for punch bowl news, max collen. let's start with this republican push we just detailed, hypocrisy involved. let's look at their point of view. what is their political end game here with these documents? what sort of -- what do the probes look like? is there a chance this could backfire on them? >> sure. i think we have to look at is house republicans forecasted a number of investigations into president biden. they think they struck gold here. this is not hunter biden. this is not something which democrats can easily write off as a conspiracy theory. this is some hard evidence of classified documents. and to your point earlier, they can connect this back to president trump and try to use this to refute democratic attacks on trump. house republicans believe there is a lot here. one thing i would say, however, because there is now a special counsel looking into this, it's going to be a lot harder for hill republicans to get data, to get informatio

and now tonight, 167 years later, republicans in the house of representatives find themselves similarly unable to elect a speaker. the republican front runner, congressman kevin mccarthy, has already had three failed votes just today. the latest featuring 20 republicans voting against him -- as a reminder, mccarthy can only afford to lose for members of his own party. all of this is highly unusual. it almost never happens. this is almost a proforma exercise, in typical. years failing to elect a speaker after one round of voting has happened only 14 times in our nation's history. and 13 of those times were before the civil war. those leadership elections were in a period of american history that was so violent and so divided that members of congress literally fought each other. and needless to say, very little actual productive legislating got done after those, shall we say, unusual difficulties. now anything is possible here. but it seems incredibly unlikely that this leadership election is going to last anywhere near as long as the one in 1856 did. for all of our sakes, let's hope it d

still, house republicans are vowing investigations, but the house judiciary committee now chaired bysman, jim jordan calling on the justice department to turn over all materials related to the investigation. what is your response to this developing story? >> well, first off thank you for having me reverend. if you look at what is going on on the biden situation, it is really about intent. if you look at the trump situation, it was him trying to hide information and the material from the fbi. the intent and the biden situation is the moment that they found the product, they let the authorities know. elected archives know on a second time that he invoked the justice department in. in terms of the trump situation, you know it's like about a year for them to continue to deny and ultimately the fbi had to go to the courts to get a search warrant to go to mar-a-lago. and then that is how they found the classified documents at mar-a-lago. the fbi did not have to go to the biden residence or the pen senator to see what he asked to got, it was voluntarily showed. you saw the boxes and boxes o
