talk to me about your experience there and why you chose howard. >> you know, i tell you, at howard is, african-american men have to deal with when they walk out of the house, but at howard was where i truly learned that we are a diaspora around the world, and i learned how similar we as black people are regardless of whether you're in jamaica, the virgin islands, cuba, haiti. we are all one big plethora of blackness that go back to our roots, which is africa. and so for me it was less about being latino at howard and more about being afro at how'd. and realing how similar we are regardless of where the ship may have ended up and placed our relatives. >> did you ever feel like you had to choose between your identities at howard? you know, were people saying, hey, are you black or latino? did you have to explain your lineage to a lot of people there? >> i've only had to explain it to latinos because latinos would ask me, well, why do you say that you're black, or why do you think you're black first and latino second? and i always remind them say the word. it's afro-latino. what comes fi

actor clint howard.oward both join us now. it's great to see you both. thank you so much. i guess, ron, i'll start with you and clint i want to hear from you as well. why did you decide to collaborate on the book. i understand your father was a great inspiration for this. >> he certainly was. it was really at his memorial. my mom had passed and 15 years later dad passed three years ago. i thought about doing a book at one point or another and we also tried to get dad to do a book about what it was like to raise a couple of kids in the business. he did it and handled it in a unique and surprising way. as we were preparing for the memorial looking at photos, literally i said hey, tom hanks told me if i ever did a book it should be about our childhood. why don't we make about it our childhood and it's a chance to write about mom and dad. "the boys" is also a tribute to our mom because that's what she called us. >> clint, talk about your childhood. you guys, of course, it's all you ever knew. you thought you

there was a student who went to howard, and his great-grandmother, who never went to college and was poor, signed up for parent plus loans so he could go to howard university, which is a great school, but in all likelihood she wasn't going to be able to pay it back. she ended up dying, but in all likelihood, she wasn't going to be able to pay it back. same thing at the community college level. i just -- one of the questions that's always stuck in my mind, okay, if it's bad to give loans to homeowners that are just destined to fail and have all these negative consequences ever, well, why give loans to community college students at such a high likelihood of dropping out? >> right. so i'm going to push back with you on that. >> please. >> like, education is a public good, and it's something that everybody has essentially, not a constitutional right, but potentially actually a human right, a human universal right if we go by the u.n., to access education to the level they're taking advantage of. so i would hope you would agree, for example, one example is if you have a disability, the st
