her daughter left her oakland, california, home last saturday and was last seen on campus at howard university on monday. i talked with the mother april scott by phone who said her daughter was dealing with bullying issues with her roommate and her friends. the university confirms the roommate moved out before winter break. >> she was still feeling threatened by them, that these girls really hate you and have it out for you. reporter: by the time arianna arrived back at her dorm here montgomery said the girl expressed to her mother that she may withdraw from howard university. >> they were in her room taking her clothes, taking her food, took her ipad. reporter: mom says arianna even mentioned the deadly stabbing at bowie state university where a female student fatally stabbed her roommate back in september. >> i don't know what to do. i'm scared. i've seen what's happened at other campuses with roommates and i don't want that to happen with me. >> we shut no doors of. reporter: police are trying to find out more information on arianna's off campus boyfriend. meantime mom has been posting on f

one of the things that howard university and howard university hospital has identified was that we have a large population of at-risk drinkers, substance abuse patients, and that we wanted to find a way to try to really help our population. we didn't have enough social workers or frontline people to do it. so what we had done was put together a proposal to train our residents. and samhsa was very helpful in that and provided us with a grant to train our residents and our staff about screening, brief intervention, and referral for treatment. so when a patient comes in on whatever service... they may not have come in for an alcohol or substance abuse problem, but the results of the discussion may have been screening that patient just to see, is this person at risk? and once you have done that, you really go through a process of educating the residents and staff about how you can have open-ended questions, affirmative listening, reflective listening, that really allows a person to open up and tell you what is going on. now we know physicians and health care personnel are very busy, so the

a series of 2010 studies at howard university's journalist education, one of america's oldest continuous academics focusing on black people reported how church involvement increases education success in inner cities. in the article titled faith in the inner city, the urban black church and state educational outcomes, dr. brian barrett, an education professor at the state university of new york, describes the unique contributions black churches play and cultivating successful students in inner cities. he observes that quote, religious socialization reinforces attitudes, outlooks, behaviors and practices, particularly through individuals commitments to and adoption of the goals and expectations of the group, end of quote. these are the things that are conducive to positive educational outcomes. in fact, back in 2009, barrett reported another article that for black inner-city youth who reported to religious services often, the black white achievement gap quote, was eliminated. i will say that again. the black white achievement gap was eliminated simply because students in low-performing sch

also in that same journal from howard university, 4273 black students were studied, and he was found that family and religious life, family and religious social capital are the most important predictors for positive student college success. so those students in low performing schools in inner cities who are involved in religious life, outside of the family, it's the second greatest predictor of them actually going to college. and, as i said earlier, it eliminates the black-white achievement gap. these officers include -- include students involved parents and active social life have greater opportunities and choices in the future. if we look, for example, at issues like the minimum wage can we recognize of course that emotionally this is a winner. people love to think about the consequences of raising the minimum wage, but i would like to submit that often people don't think about the long-term consequences of raising the minimum wage because we live in a world where people act and make decisions on the basis of something called incentives. such an increase actually hurts minorities.
