asa hutchinson was asked about this after his segment with tucker carlsen that got pretty tense over things like transgender, firming care for kids or the covid vaccine. his quote to reporters was sometimes you get applause and sometimes you don't. i was on stage to try to bring some people over to me that's what i hope i did. but this is the challenge especially when former president trump was not at the event and he says he may not be on the debate stage in august next month. we are kind of waiting to see these candidates draw bigger contrast to the former president especially when he is far and away the front runner in national polls in this primary. it's a difficult needle to thread and i think we've seen almost all of the candidates have challenges with that. host: before i let you go, one last question, the group no labels which is considering supporting a third-party candidate, if trump and biden are there party nominees, there is an event later today featuring west virginia senator joe manchin who we know is a democrat. can you tell us a little about what you know about what

surely, we'll hear from asia asa hutchinson, chris christie, making their platform anti-trump. other candidates want the party to move on from trump, ideally to him, ron desantis, nikki haley, tim scott. perhaps someone about to be indicted for holding up the transfer of power in the last election shouldn't have the opportunity to transfer power to him in the next. the short answer is, it is unlikely the candidates will start the process of breaking from trump on this issue. except perhaps mike pence. he'd be most interesting to watch today. he was closely involved in all things related to the transfer of power. he has been critical of the former president on that issue and has stuck to his guns about it, even when pressed in interviews and by, you know, hostile voters. that may have cost him. he's raised just a little over 1 million. he hasn't hit the requisite number of donors necessary to get on the debate stage. how the broader republican party reacts will be interesting to watch. i'm not surprised at all by the house republicans falling into line. interesting to note that,

you might remember cassidy hutchinson's testimony to that end. ms. hutchinson was told when trump's presidential limo refused to take him to the capitol, trump was so furious that he tried to grab the steering wheel and then physically fought with his lead secret service agent who tried to restrain him. once he was forced back to the white house, trump kept his overcoat on still arguing to be taken to the capitol. his motorcade waited outside for more than 45 minutes just in case trump won that argument. if i were jack smith -- i'm certainly not, but if i were, i would definitely want to hear from trump's advance man about how everything went down on january 6th itself. but we also know the special counsel has previously been interested in william russell for other reasons. russell has already testified twice before special counsel grand juries. once reportedly for smith's investigation into trump's use of elebz fraud claims to fund raise after the 2020 election and then another time as part of the mar-a-lago documents investigation. william russell

hutchinson did in florida this weekend, they get booed. they have a kunl percentage points of support here. what we have seen consistently is that the vast majority of the republican electorate is sympathetic to donald trump. in a poll in may, 67% of republican voters said that joe biden is an illegitimate president in their minds, and when you look at the strategy and the perhaps hesitancy of ron desantis and nikki haley in taking on donald trump directly around the events of january 6th, that polling evidence of where the republican electorate views donald trump's actions is understandable from a political end. >> here's another way of looking at it and i'm going to get to ron desantis in a second. when you look at everyone else not only not criticizing him but defending him, you know, in talking about things like hunting republicans, i guess my question is if you're at 0 or 2% or 3%, obviously it's not working so far against donald trump. what do you have to lose? >> yeah, those comments are cringe worthy, and it still astonishes me tha

again, but the exception of chris christie, a little bit of willard, maybe each hutchinson. are any of them really running? how do you go to a donor and say, i would like you to back me, write me a big fat check and doing essentially nothing to go after donald trump while the faces indictment after indictment. isn't that exactly the drug dealer you should be going for? >> yes. but what we have to wrap our minds around is that the republican party is pretty much in sync with donald trump. he is not an outlier. he really is the mainstream of the party. so when you have that and you're not really running to be a governing party, i have a going out of business still on the party. and i hope the congressman is right here. but, i think that a running to prove a point that it is a white grievance party and what greater grievance than to say, i'm going to be for the guy that's been indicted. so i don't think that any of these candidates except for the two that you mentioned, kristie, and hutchinson. both clients of mine. they all say that they'll support trump if he's a nominee. so,

>> yeah, i'm glad you play played that testimony from cassidy hutchinson. because, in fact, what you are to ask him is, did you hear the president say the things that she heard him say? and did you witness exhibit knowledge that the crowd could, in fact, include people who were armed, that in fact, the secret service was concerned about people they are having weapons? and you hear him, for instance, say, what did you hear him say about the desire to go to the capitol? we heard the story from cassidy hutchinson about how he, in fact, violently erupted when the secret service said, no, they wouldn't take him to the capitol along with the marching mob. that has been denied by some of the secret service people. what did we'll russell hear him say? and what did you hear back at the white house? he would have been in close proximity, presumably, with the president much of the day. what did he hear him say? could he corroborate some of the testimony we have heard from the january six committee about the presidents reaction to the crowd? they said, hang mike pence.

you've got isa hutchinson, chris christie, people who are prepared to take the stand and say we stand for sort of conservative principles, but not that. i think when you add where these three guys are running, it's about 3% or something to that nature. maybe 4%. it's there any hope that's enough people might make it to a debate stage where they can sort of say there's an alternative in the republican party, and it doesn't have to be trump, but it doesn't have to be people who try to out-trump trump, like desantis? >> i certainly hope there's a path for chris christie and will hurd and asa hutchinson, but one thing about christie and heard, which differentiates himself from some of these other republican candidates, if they can actually run and -- in very difficult places, where republicans aren't really supposed to win. so, they come at this from a very different perspective. they understand the importance of winning independents and swing voters, and they also understand that trump, you know, is a disaster! it's a catastrophe with those types of voters! and what these guys are good a
