peter: i would not say a mistake. thing i would have been more careful in telecasting the sort of new narrative. the ecb wanted to communicate to the citizens, and i don't think it was directed to the markets really. it was directed to the people by saying we follow the situation. inflation is persisting, and we care very much. the problem i think is that the market took it very badly, and you had a big reaction there. i think on financing conditions, most governors would think it is still manageable. they are not going to tighten too much. essentially, the reason is very different from the u.s., that financing conditions are basically determined by economic conditions, not capital markets. so you have seen the equity prices and conditions remain pretty good. so that is a little but of the gamble that the ecb is making on financing conditions, that the market is going to be contained, the reaction is going to be contained, including the spreads, and that the banking lending channel is not going to react very much. guy
