i thought, i found out i was undocumented when i was 16. there was no journalist in my family. there were no writers, but my english teacher in high school said i asked too many unknowing questions and i should get into journalism. she sent me to a journalism camp for two weeks and then i found out at the camp that when you write a story you get a byline. so it says by jose antonio vargas. my naÏve 16 year old was thinking if i can't be here because i don't have the right papers, at least my name could be in the newspaper. so that literally was on the reason i became a journalist, so my name could be a piece of paper. when i was 17 i made a list of all the things i thought i needed to do to be a successful journalist. so right for the "new york times" or the "washington post," get published in the new yorker because people thought that was a good thing. be a political reporter. when some sort of a prize, like a pulitzer. and then i had checked off everything by the time i was almost 30. so the question was do i stay? i i can, i don't know how all these years i was able to pass.
