nbc bay area's ian cole has the story. >> reporter: it's a big day at ucsf children's hospital. picture day. not a promotional shoot for doctors and nurses. it's an opportunity to get a picture with 8-year-old patient lydia. >> she has become a real kind of star in the hospital. >> reporter: you see, on christmas day, lydia got a cough. it wouldn't stop. >> and she didn't even have a fever. then one day i was snuggling with her, and she was breathing really fast. >> reporter: her mom emily took her to urgent care in their hometown of bakersfield. soon after, she was air lifted here. >> it was bad. really bad. >> reporter: the next three months would be scary and unpredictable. lydia had to be hooked up to a machine that oxygenates and removes carbon dioxide from the blood, like an artificial lung. most patients are on it for two weeks. for lydia, it was two months. >> i was the first kid that was on the robot lung for eight weeks. >> literally hundreds of people have taken care of her. extremely unusual to get that sick from influenza. it's also very unusual to require that kind

ian cole is at the stanford hospital outpatient center in redwood city with the latest. ian? >> redwood city detectives say they've erupted a 55-year-old operating room technician. investigators say it started in the surgery center's recovery room where some stanford employees reported seeing him inappropriately touch patients who were sedated. then the hospital put him on administrative leave and notified police. an investigation began which police say turned up four victims who were operated on between march 29th and april 2nd. today he was booked into jail on four counts of sexual battery. in redwood city, ian cole nbc bay area news. >> thank you. >>> drog this man? he was caught on camera groping a young girl at the stanford shopping center. police say he followed the 12-year-old down an aisle and touched her inappropriately. the suspect ran off when the girl told her mom. >>> hundreds gathered for a candle light vigil for a 9-year-old boy stabbed to death by a teenage family friend killed while the little boy slept. he was killed in his own bed. in a jail house interview
