in washington, i'm ray suarez. >> the mountains of west virginia have provided generations with jobs in coal. but on january 9th, 2014, the state woke up to an example of the costs of it's industrial economy. a tank containing a chemical used the process of coal production had leaked its contents into the elk river, just a mile upstream from the largest water treatment plant in west virginia. >> water is scarce following a warning from west virginia's governor, do not drink, bathe, cook or wash clothes using tap water.., >>...chemical leak, a chemical used to clean coal, leaked from a storage facility... >>...the states health department says the water was contaminated with a potentially harmful chemical, mchm... >> a federal investigation is on-going - but this spill was just the most visible of many incidents in west virginia - where, in the past decade, the coal industry has recorded thousands of water violations. fault lines has come here to find out how the state's main industry affects its most vital resource. >> little testing have been done on the chemical that leaked from these tanks

in west virginia's coal country, it's not hard to find people who say their water is polluted by mining. in the small hollow of cedar creek, we went to talk to sherry walker. in the last few years, she claims, she and her neighbors have all had their well water go bad. according to the nearby mining company's own reports, their site violated its permits hundreds of times from 2006 to 2011. the mining site's permit was renewed in 2012. >> when did you pour this? >> i got that yesterday. >> have you had this tested? >> yes. >> what did they tell you? >> the water is terrible. it's got a lot of iron in it it's got a lot of arsenic in it. >> arsenic? >> yes it's got a high level of arsenic in it. >> it's like a snow globe of things you don't want to put in your body. so you're quarter mile from a mine? >> yes. my water didn't get bad until it started all that. and then this is what i live with, daily. and i know by the neighbors, they have the same situation. it's a lot of hassle. be grateful if you have good water. >> sherry's water - as well as her neighbors', has levels of toxins above n

west today. scott brooke is live in martinsburg, west virginia. we talked to him early this morning. how are conditions now scott? >> good morning mike. it is not incredibly deep, but it is cold out here and light snow continued throughout the morning here in martinsburg. inside my mobile newsroom, let me give you a shot of the dash cam. residential area in martinsburg, this is why school's are closed in west virginia's panhandle and what commuters saw this morning as well. let me take you out on the roadways in the morning, some of the pictures i saw very early before dawn this morning, we had lots of plow trucks out and about. there was enough snow coming down it really needed to be salted. it one a lot but those places that were salted ended up with pretty clear roads. we did end up with snow still sitting on the roadways. interstate 81 a shot you saw. a lot of plow trucks available ready to spread salt as light snow is expected, particularly up and down the 81 corridor from here in martinsburg all the way to hagerstown, people shoveling small amounts of snow and getting on with t

and it came to an end yesterday in lewisburg, west virginia, when police arrested edward campbell and his 21-year-old son! this was after a shootout. police say they found the bodies of jerome faulkner and his wife dora inside one of the campbells' vehicles. investigators believe the campbells killed the faulkners and then set their north carolina home on fire. >> this is west virginia police had not stopped them this crime spree would have continued on. >> police said the injured officers were both wearing body armor and their injuries are not life threatening. one of the suspects was also wounded in that exchange of gunfire. >> three people were injured at an underaged drinking party at a hotel. this happened at the hilton hotel on seminary road early this morning. police say several underaged people were drinking inside of a hotel room there when the argument turned violent. one 18-year-old man is hospitalized in serious condition and two others age 17 and 18 were stabbed. but they are expected to survive.

this one that just went boom in virginia is a brand new pipeline. it goes down through a corner of westand down to texas. that pipeline that just blew up has only been in population for a year. for some reason yesterday it blew up and created that huge fire ball. the company is trying to work with the federal government to find out what went wrong there, what caused this. the local fire chief credits the weather. that said there was no snow advantage for the last natural gas pipeline explosion. that was in mississippi, two weeks just before the yellow stone river spill. it created a plume of smoke so big it was picked up on a weather radar, as if it was weather. maybe this is just how pipelines celebrate january, but all over the country, pipelines new and old are popping like roman candles. we have had five this month so far and the month is not over. so far the only evident national response to this is senate republicans moving to jam through approval of the keystone pipeline. while the senate grinds on with that procedure, the rest of the country is wondering how much more pipeline w

latter part of the 19th century and early as part of the 20th century and it is kind of uncommon in west virginia in that it drew a lot of immigrants from various parts of europe here in search of jobs and opportunity. so that generation, that immigrant generation is pretty much gone. i thought it was important to record their story to get the memories of the immigrant generation and the ethnic neighborhoods they formed. it's an important part of our history, most people tend to focus on the frontier history civil war history those periods are important.
