indianapolis has that. the state of indiana does not. do you think the state needs to take a firmer stand on zrims? >> i did notice that difference. i know that some of our largest employers, including eli lilly, you may be aware of the letter that nine ceos from major employers wrote to the governor yesterday, urging him and the state legislature to fix this. that's going to be the key. does the -- would the language essentially work instead of stronger anti-discrimination laws at the state level? i want to take a little bit of issue with one of the things the governor said and has been saying. when we cite the fact that 19 other states have rfras, every state that we've identified so far has got anti-discrimination law at the state level, which effectively balances out the religious freedom protections in rfras. so your question, i mean, that is going to be the key. does the clarifying language that says that businesses may not discriminate, could that, you know, serve as some kind of a substitute for stronger anti-discrimination laws?

john yang joins me from indianapolis. john, i am keeping an eye on the news conference that should start soon with the governor but we just played that sound bite from fox news this morning where he maintains that he will stand by this law, so do we have any indication that he might change or say something different in this news conference? >> his press secretary says he wants to clarify the law today at the press conference, but that's what he has been trying to do since thursday when he signed it and the reaction he has gotten is this avalanche of criticism coming not only from folks in indiana but also from ceos of big businesses around the country who do business in indiana. tim cook head of apple, calling it dangerous. the head of marriott hotels calling it idiocy. it will be interesting to see what he has to say. earlier today on msnbc, the speaker of the indiana house, a republican, suggested that one way out of this may be to clarify or take out language in the bill that says that religious beliefs can be a defens

joining me on the phone from indianapolis is tom lobianco a political analyst for the "indianapolis star." tom, i was just handed this information concerning the afscme. this is the largest and fastest growing public services employees union. has more than 1.6 million working and retired members that they are going to be moving its convention out of indiana coming up in october. so the reaction and the ripple effect it continues. is the governor and those within the state of politics concerned about the footprint this law is leaving behind? >> sure. well thomas thanks for having me on. i appreciate it. you know i think that nobody saw, certainly none of the republican leaders here, saw quite the fallout that's happened over this. you know, what's interesting, what happened today is when pence went on this week yesterday, and ducked the question six times, he couldn't give an answer. it just looked terrible in doing that. he set up this emergency news conference that the house speaker and the senate president had to call. and the funny thing is that we're not even sure that they really ha

i've always felt embraced by india indiana, by indianapolis. i've been to olympic diving trials, nationals, pan american games here. i don't think it reflects the people of indiana. >> reporter: do you think indiana is getting a bad rap in all of this? >> i'm not going to say that indiana's getting a bad rap with this. something needs to be done. and i think that education needs to happen. sexual identity is -- you're born this way. so you're excluding a portion of humanity. >> ashleigh, did you have a question? >> i'd love to get his reaction to what the governor said or didn't say. a fix, he didn't say what a fix was. and short of this notion of protection, it protected class for gays and lesbians in the state of indiana. what could possibly fix this bill? >> i don't know what can fix the bill. i really don't. you do have to include -- be inclusive. >> reporter: he said he wouldn't include a nondiscrimination law for gays and lesbians and transgenders across indiana which is something activists have asked for for many years. >> i come from ca

>> well when you look at indianapolis i actually did an open records request for indianapolis becauseion protected for eight years now. and i asked, how many cases of discrimination have come up in the city of indianapolis? under that time. zero. not a single one. that is not need for additional there is not need for additional protections, there is not need for additional protections in indiana. >> so you're saying no. >> indiana has good people. >> this is not about indiana people and hoosiers this is will would belyists and special interests groups and the lawmakers at the top of the food chain that went along with you. this not about the people of indiana. >> it's about the people of indiana, they want this bill, they want greater religious protections against government. that's what the bill is about. protecting the first amendment rights of all hoosiers now that this law is passed and into law, every single hoosier. whether you're gay or straight conservative or liberal, republican or democrat you have greater first amendments rights in indiana today than you did before because

he sort of gave me a tour of indianapolis. and showed me all of the businesses that he had helped bring in. while governor. and what's a shame is that i think a lot of these businesses now are kind of grandstanding on this opportunity, and withdrawing, saying they're not going to expand. rightly or wrongly. and that really does hurt governor pence, if he had any national aspirations. it hurts indiana politics. it hurts indiana's economy. the fact that they're doing it i think is a huge bruise to both governor pence and the state of indiana. >> what do you think of his play of saying, we're not going to make lgbt a protected class under state law? i don't know if legally that would be a fix. this will get a little confusing. if you did that, you create lgbt as a protected class like the other ones we have, that initiates state action that would trigger this law. the state action is you must respect the lights of lgbt. so i don't know if it's a fix. politically, van, when he said that, i'm not going to do that, what signal did t

one of the biggest critics of this is right there in indianapolis, the mayor of indianapolis. greg ballards, who is a republican he is screaming like crazy. mike pence is going to back down. >> the culture of the nfl is they have the best attorneys around. when they say they're studying the law, i take that as they already know the law, but they're running up the flag pole so everybody knows that they're not going to approve of this down the road so they're not going to get too heavy-handed because they don't want that bad pr being heavy-handed, but they know what the law is when they say they're studying it. >> they're serious. we've seen a precedent for that. just kind of a quick putting this into perspective, indiana back in the 1920s got a reputation for being the most northern southern state in the union. to date the largest clan rally in the world took place near indianapolis. it took until the 1970s to erase that image. the guy who built the stadium built the mall and airport. people are not going to allow this one governor to take indiana back into the 18th century. >>

let me start on the ground with jim shell in indianapolis. so, jim, we have the governor giving an interview to "the indianapolis star" saying he now supports some kind of legislative effort to clarify this. he was asked in an interview. he was asked would that legislation potentially make lgbt people a protected class. his response to that that's not on my agenda. do we have any sense what form this clarification might take? >> good morning, steve. what i would look for is legislation that would say that this religious freedom bill does not super cede local ordinance. here in indianapolis there is a nondiscrimination ordinance in place and city leaders believe the religious predom bill trumps it. if it makes it clear that that's not the case it looks like the governor thinks that will solve his problem. >> it would. but then other municipalities in the state wouldn't. would that satisfy the critics here do you think? >> not necessarily. what it would do is encourage municipalities to pass their own ordinance. the only other apparent fix t on

there are protests in indianapolis right now against a new state law critics say allows businesses topeople called the religious freedom restoration act. the government cannot infringe on your religious beliefs. if your religion says gay is wrong, you don't have to for example, make a wedding cake for a gay couple. governor mike pence is standing behind his new law. but some are balking. angie's list said it's halting plans for a $40 million expansion of its indianapolis headquarters that was supposed to create 1,000 new jobs. here's tonight's money and power. >> reporter: protests and anger across indiana. gays lesbians and their supporters rallying in opposition to sb-101 the so-called religious freedom restoration act. >> i have two kids who could possibly not be served because they don't believe in me being married to another woman. >> reporter: they say it will turn customers away if a religious freedom is being violated. it came about after indiana was forced to allow same-sex marriages last year. supporters say businesses will no longer be forced to support same-sex marriage. i

over the weekend angie's list backed out of a plan to expand its headquarters in indianapolis.n would have landed about a thousand jobs. >> reporter: indiana governor mike pence showed no signs of backing down today. >> i mean this is not about discrimination. this is about protecting the religious liberty of every hoosier of every faith. >> reporter: but he says he would agree to legislation that clarifies the new law. >> but if the general assembly in indiana sends me a bill that adds a section that reiterates and amplifies and clarify what the law really is and what it has been for the last 20 years, then i'm open to that. but we're not going to change this law. >> reporter: indiana joins 19 states with freedom of religion laws. a dozen more have similar legislation pending. more than 700 protesters gathered at the state capitols to warn they would allow businesses to serve gay and lesbians for business reasons, but the law's already having a different kind of business impact. seattle mayor ed murray says he'll sign an executive order banning official city travel to indiana.

we saw protests about the final four in indianapolis.ou see this new law having any affect whatsoever on the tournament this weekend? >> yes, i do. and there is precedent for this kind of thing. i mean, this law is i will conceived. it wasn't well thought out. and now four days after it's pass they're talking about amending and revising it. i think there is a possible protest going on. >> there have been calls for people not only to boycott internally displaced people, but to move it out of indianapolis. some people don't understand how big of an event this is. we're talking about tens ever thousands of hotel rooms and they could not just move it, but they could recommend next year. >> this is huge business. but there is a precedent for this. the players conceivably have a voice. in 1965, the afl players walked off from the all-star game in january that have year when it was to be held in new orleans and the game had to be re rescheduled and moved to texas. you're right further games and future considerations of the ncaa will be weighed
