but from washington, trump will then travel here to indianapolis.a big rally tonight where he's going to be joined by indiana coaching legend, bobby knight. the question now, will a trump win here in indiana next week all but wrap up the nomination or will ted cruz manage to stop the trump train? i want to bring in somebody who knows more about indiana politics than perhaps anybody out there, brian howey. it's good to have you with me. let's talk about the early portion of the week where everything was the headline, the cruz-kasich alliance. why was that a smart play for governor kasich to give up the border state of campaigning in indiana after the only state he won was ohio. >> i think they felt that was the only way they could deny trump the nomination. i think it may be backfiring. we're hearing a lot of hoosiers saying they don't like to be told what to do. they don't really see themselves moving from kasich to cruz. i've even heard some of them say they're going to vote for trump so it may backfire. >> so not liking both men because of the all

this is in indianapolis.'re expected to see ted cruz in just seconds, so ladies, i may have to interrupt you while our conversation starts. but katy, let me start with you outside of trump tower in new york city. does the trump campaign expect to start seeing more support from capitol hill now? >> reporter: the trump campaign has been saying this about a month. as we get closer to the convention and becomes clearer donald trump is going to get the nomination, you'll see more folks from the establishment and from capitol hill start lining up behind donald trump and that is what we have been seeing the last 24 hours. remember donald trump has been a lightning rod on the campaign trail and it's been anything but certain that he would be able to get this sort of support, but as he has come out with these increasingly landslide wins in the northeast especially, we are seeing more support come out, especially as ted cruz's ability to catch him, ability to get close to his delegate count or his vote count becomes ha

nbc news here in indianapolis, we know she's in town. we would certainly not be surprised to see her take the stage amid the speculation that perhaps cruz will name her as somebody he wants to be on a ticket with, who wants to be a running mate. i can tell you that cruz and fiorina will be heading to california this weekend together in order to try to work the delegate hunting strategy that we've been talking about. california has its convention coming up. this is an area where cruz knows he needs to be strong given that his only hope now mathematically now that he's been eliminated from contention of locking up the nomination outright is to head to a contested, get to a second ballot and if he does, make sure the delegates that can be swayed will be swayed. that is the crux of cruz's strategy. that is what we know coming up this indiana. in the meantime he is working very hard to try to change the narrative. you talk about the timing of this major announcement, i can tell you the phrase that is said to be by multiple republican operativ

tim is the editorial director from "the indianapolis star" and he is joining us right now. thank you for being here. before we get to the editorial, get your reaction to this announcement that governor mike pence will be endorsing ted cruz. what do you make of it? >> it's big news. the governor is well respected among republicans in indiana still. he's had a tough couple of years in the general electorate, but it's a significant move for cruz. cruz is working the state very hard, as many have said, he has to win indiana on tuesday. polls showing him close but still behind. i don't know how much this will actually make in terms of voting, people coming out and voting for cruz on tuesday, but it does dominate the news cycle, and it starts to help him build some momentum in the state that he has to have. >> you get the sense this did not come easily for governor pence. it didn't come early, that's for sure. all the candidates were working him, and up until a few days ago, he had said he wasn't sure he was going to endorse. what do you think changed his mind? >> he's been getti
