indra petersons tracking the late winter blast. good morning, indra. >> good morning. right? it's rough enough that the temperatures are dropping so much, but then you talk about these winds this morning. makes it feel so much worse. it's so easy to see this huge temperature drop that we have seen in just 24 hours, guys. i mean, this morning, notice the difference. new york city is only 21 degrees. but like you said, once you add in these winds -- and they are strong -- we're talking about gusting as high as 40 miles per hour out towards new york city, philly also seeing gusts about 43. now we talk about the feels-like temperatures, right? many places feeling like subzero again. i mean, it's march! what is going on? detroit feels like 4 below. pittsburgh right now feels like 7 below. it is a rough day. the good news, it's not going to last long, but let's talk about what we have seen from the storm that's already been out there. cleveland, ohio, about 4 inches, detroit saw about 6 inches, but again, out towards buffalo, they had a blizzard, saw over a foot of snow and more sn

indra petersons is back with us. good morning, indra. >> good morning.oing to be warmer in the east but keep in mind out west heavy rain. that's still the forecast here. as you can see that moisture cell really extending from south of hawaii into the pacific northwest. we'll continue on see above-normal temperatures heavy rainfall as several systems make their way through. this is a concern not just for flooding and mud slides that they've already been seeing but of course the threat for avalanches. we're seeing a lot of kind of temperature fluctuations and with that that's never a good thing for the most recent snowfall they've been seeing. otherwise, southeast, we're seeing a lot of rain recently. keep in mind, temperatures rebounding and for the weekend. so we love that. just keep in mind the low that's in the south, that's going to start climbing up the coastline and intersecting with the cold air we've been dealing with. put those air masses together and you have the threat for icing, tomorrow morning's commute. d.c. down through raleigh, a concern

indra petersons has that forecast. >> take it indra! how's that?ve such a bad forecast? that's so weird, guys. that's not right. let me give you some good news. we're talking about that warm front continuing to bring even warmer weather today to the northeast. just keep in mind, we know there's a cold front behind it, so things are going to be changing quickly, but let's talk about today. look at these numbers. new york city talking about 60 degrees. you almost need a second take when you look at d.c., talking about 73. temperatures a good 19 degrees above normal. but you're going to start to see the change. notice st. louis about 79, 20 degrees above normal. look at the drop by tomorrow, already going to 15 below normal. tomorrow, the high, 79, drops down to 39! that is not cool. talking about a 40-degree temperature drop there and this eventually shifts to the northeast, where new york city is talking about 20s as their highs, just two days away. d.c., forget those 70s. you'll go down to a high of 35 in two days, thanks to this guy, not me, this

indra petersons is here with the forecast.e won't see that again for a long, long time. >> on that note, let's talk about these temperatures. we actually have good news. the temperatures are going to be warming up. indianapolis, 13. chicago, 19. boston about 25. so things are improving. and take a look. here are your highs over the next several days. more importantly as you go closer to the weekend, right? midwest, temperatures are climbing to about average. not the only spot. same thing, 30s in boston going above that, 1 degree, we're going to take 43 in boston. and looking good. keep in mind, there's the jet stream rising a little bit. remember, it's cold boston jet stream and to the south a little showers. higher in the northeast tonight. and towards the gulf, we're talking light rain with temperatures warmer. and in the southeast, we'll see it go down a little bit. the reason for that, there say low out there. and this is the guy we watch to see whether or not it climbs up the coastline and maybe a chance for snow towards

we'll keep pictures up while i talk to indra petersons. can't stay up in the air for a long period of time in part because of weather in this part of the world. really rough here indra. >> the difference in the region is pretty far. we had the storm system move through. problems with visibility and high ocean currents. we were able to pull map as. we have a large search zone everybody was looking for yesterday. a lot of people were asking how did we hone in on the smaller area? we looked at -- remember at 2:15 in the morning was 2 last tithe time we had contact with the plane. what we actually looked at, the bottom portion of the ark. the connection of the last radar connection with the ping of the satellite. if you look at the fuel time left. if the plane went straight down and took an hour for each time period moving an hour forward, you came to the last point. that's where they would have ran out of fuel. that's where they came to the region or assuming how they honed down on that search area. one of the things people have been talking

our indra petersons is here with that. good morning, indra. >> good morning. >> good morning.o key to know what's going on in the air as well, of course on the water itself. i want to take you back to the basics and talk about the pinger. a lot of people still confused. we're talking about the commercial aircraft pinger. let's talk about how they're hoping to find this. you're going to see a boat go by and it's going to look for the pinger at the right frequency, kind of acts like a microphone, searching at that exact frequency, going by just at several knots. notice that locator only goes up to about 20,000 feet. this is key because we need to talk about what that terrain is like underneath the water there, and not all of that terrain is at that 20,000-feet level. you're talking about some of these depths being about three to four miles or deeper. so, that's one of the concerns. the bulk of the terrain, of course, can be covered by 20,000 feet, but there will be some regions they still can't even locate with that method. now let's talk about what's going on in the air itself.

let's go to jennifer gray now, because she's in for indra petersons.ther over the search area. tell us -- you heard the headlines from that press conference, talking about the fact that the debris that was, possible debris that was spotted over the last weeks or so in the satellite images could still be consistent with the new search area? what do you make of that, given what you know about the currents and the weather patterns? >> well, the currents where they're talking about the new search area being definitely far less fierce than what we were talking about with the acc, that very strong west-to-east current. it's a long way to drift, but it is a very wild ocean, and so, it is possible. i think it's much better if the plane did go down in the new search area box. i think it will be much easier for folks to get out there and search not only above the ocean but under the ocean. so, it is going to be definitely positive. >> and debris could have floated -- so we're clear here, what people are looking at, that red box, they're saying that in that -- >>

for more on that let's bring in our meteorologist indra petersons. >> this is about a 12-hour loop.o see a large cold front made its way through the area. that's the concern. the good news, this cold front is making its way currently now out of the region. keep in mind that doesn't mean conditions will be improving. the reason for that is we're still talking about a common jirkulation in the region. these are some very strong winds and currents. when you talk about latitudes, this is a very common trade route because these winds are so strong in westerly to easterly direction. right here the winds aren't as strong but that doesn't mean anyone trying to make their way into the region will be dealing with some high seas and strong winds. currently the cold front made its way out. the winds aren't as strong as they were just a few hours ago. doesn't mean there won't be periods of time where those winds will increase. keep in mind strong winds also means rough seas. those periods time of when the winds do increase. we'll see those seas increase. they correlate together. typically in thi

let's get to indra petersons, she's live in d.c. the federal government is actually closed down today. >> reporter: does it took like it's march? once again it feels this winter wonderland out towards d.c. it's hard to believe. if you look at the snow on the ground this just came in the last few hours. when i woke up it was still raining then freezing rain and that quickly switched over to ice. it's hard to tell where the road is in comparison to the mall. the worst part about this is underneath these several inches of snow is a thick coating of ice because, again, we had rain this morning and the temperatures this morning were warmer than the afternoon. the temperatures are cooling off each hour but now we're talking about single digits with wind chill, feels like 6 degrees out here and every once in a while a gust comes up and makes things miserable. as far as what we're expecting, keep in mind this is the same system that was over l.a. right before the oscars. a big storm. had an ef-0 tornado outside of sacramento. this storm has

let's get to indra petersons with the latest there. what do we see? that graphic is not helpful. >> we were hoping temperatures were not going to be cold anymore, but yesterday morning, we set records that even go back to the 1800s. the coldest temperature they ever had was 5 degrees on that day. if you look out toward d.c., baltimo baltimore, maryland have already seen the lowest temperatures. they won the coldest winter. things are finally getting better. temperatures are warming up to not only normal, but above normal. temperatures going back to the 40s in the midwest. northeast, same thing, things are really improving here, especially as you go through saturdays. we could see some above-normal temperatures. there's still snow showers today from midwest, ohio valley to northeast. we are going to be watching this guy. this low could cruise up the coastline meaning snow showers potentially in the northeast by the weekend. who cares if it's warmer. >> i don't care as long as it's warmer. i don't care as long as it's warmer. >> are you clicking your he
