that happens here in iowa. jeb bush will have to prove himself as a candidate in and of himself, and so far it looks like he is willing to dedicate the time and energy to do that here in iowa. steven: if there are 12 or 14 republican candidates, will there be more than three tickets? jennifer: i think so. yes. i think there will be some candidates who will find it difficult to see that path to the nomination. i think you can -- i think when the iowa caucuses said and done, there will be much more than three candidates. steven: let's go to ken thomas of ap. kenneth: the playoff of that you have played a very important role in the caucuses. we will probably have a very large field in iowa. does that potentially dilute religious conservatives influence and power. we saw this past week, ted cruz announced his campaign at liberty university in a clear attempt to connect with religious conservatives feared. jennifer: i am a government professor -- that is my paying job. what of the things that i would be observing ve

cnn's mark preston joins us from des moines iowa.s in the "new york times" and i think it makes a good point about the reasons to avoid going to iowa. it says that only a sliver of the voters participate in the caucus. they're 99% white. they're far more likely to be rural and evangelical than republicans are nationally and yet as we can see, all the candidates still clamor for that support. why? why is it so important? >> well michael, not just republicans. this was a state that launched barack obama back in 2008. john kerry, who went on to whip the democratic nomination won the state's 2004 al gore in 2000. jeb bush's brother george w. bush won in 2000. the reason why in primary politics this is the first contest, the starting line this is what can either kill a campaign or can launch a campaign and that's why we're seeing nine candidates here today. when it comes down to the general election iowa you know tends not to be as important, michael. it is important in a purple state, doesn't has as anyone electoral votes in general but

michele bachmann won the straw poll in iowa. republicans had this female contender to win the caucuses. rick santorum, who was competing for the same voters as michele bachmann, rick santorum hired a guy in iowa named jamie johnson to work on his campaign in that state. soon after that hire was announced, "the des moines register" got hold of an e-mail jamie johnson had once sent in which he questioned whether it could really be god's will to have a woman rule the institution of state? mr. johnson basically said it would be against god's will for a woman to be president. and if a woman were elected president, it would put the lives of american children in danger. when that happened in 2012, the michele bachmann campaign were furious. they said rick santorum was using a sexist strategy against her in iowa. they said, does he want all the female members of congress to step down and all the female supreme court justices to step down and all the female governors across the country to step down? the website talking points dug that al

asking does the latest brouhaha that hillary clinton is dealing with does it matter with activists in iowa and new hampshire? >> supporters say no way, they don't care? >> but behind the scenes a lot of insiders activists, people who are elected officials, operative, say it does matter. joe, you know this. every reporter in town will tell you that despite the united front on camera when you're talking to top democrats off camera off the record, they're getting skittish about the possible effect this story -- they think it's breaking through. every week politico's james talks to these insiders in iowa new hampshire, about 150, about we found that 40% of the democrats say that this story really matters. so on camera it's about 0% of democrats will admit that it hurts. but in the survey a big number did. of course republicans very excited about it. 85% of them say it's breaking
