i'll see you in iowa. >> mr.resident, would you way in about -- >> thank you. >> president trump there on tape. this is what he's currently on his way to iowa, and those are the remarks that he gave at length on the south lawn before departing. i want to bring in abby philip from the white house. you know, one of the big things that we noticed here was obviously that he was going after the former vice president joe biden in a major way. both of them will be in iowa today battling for the spotlight there. tell us what stood out to you about his criticisms of the former vice president. >> reporter: well, he really test drove a couple of different critiques of joe biden, and one of them is this idea that joe biden is not going to survive the democratic primary. he called him 1% joe, said that president obama picked joe biden up off of the trash heap and chose im as his vice president, so the president is trying to set expectations about what will happen to joe biden in the course of a democratic primary. he criticiz

they were iowa polls.o we make of anything of that consistency just yet or is it too early to tell? >> we are way early. it's very early. but this is a great telltale sign. remember, iowa is the clencher. once you get it, you know, there's a strong possibility you could be the nominee. look at what happened with barack obama. many people thought that, hey, he wasn't really viable and then iowa put him on top and he became president of the united states. what will i say is we have got a lot of time to go, though. and anything can happen between now and then. joe biden, right now, is the lead. but that lead is kind of small compared to other national polls. and joe biden is going to have widen that lead. you never know. kamala harris could impam frcomn fifth place in the iowa polls and come in and compete against buttigieg and elizabeth warren and bernie sanders. the bottom line is joe biden is the one to beat at this moment. he has to worry even, even though number one spot, he has to widen that margin. it'

it is harming our economy in iowa today.her it was going to be with mexico or the one he has right now with china, are really hurting our producers. iowa exports corn, soybeans, pork, ethanol, and when markets are obstructed because of tariffs and starting trade wars, it means they're going out of business. it's also hurt our manufacturers. so the problem with president trump is he doesn't actually have a strategy. he is someone who wants to fight for fight reasons, and not actually to get something done. >> one of the things that has helped certain states' economies around the country is the legalization of marijuana, which you are in favor. in fact, you just unveiled a plan to legalize marijuana, and you want to expand research into medical marijuana and make sure it's covered by both private health insurers as well as federal programs, including medicare and medicaid. why are you focusing on this issue? >> a number of reasons. i think we need to do it for the health benefits. that's why we need to deschedule marijuana. we

a real contest is forming in iowa.e asked folks in addition to the first choice for your preference in the iowa democratic caucuses, who would your second choice? who else in this group you actively considering? take a look at these numbers. 61% are using bider or use their second choice and same for warren. sanders 56%. buttigieg at 52% and harris at 52 and booker and o'rourke round out there. a majority of the iowa democratic likely caucus goers are still shopping around the top five group of candidates here and that is a key factor in this poll. we also look at the enthusiasm issue and this may be a potential warning sign for joe biden. among his supporters 29% of them say they are extremely enthusiastic about that choice, compared to 39% who support everyone else who say they are enthusiastic about their choice. so joe biden, one warning sign what is a pretty good poll for him is this potential enthusiasm gap. of course, we also want to know what is driving voters' choices and what are they looking for in these can

you got joni ernst, republican senator from iowa saying farmers in iowa are hurting right now. is that threatening the president's political standing in these states that were key to his victory in 2016? those folks being hurt by tariffs? >> i'll tell you, i come from an agriculture state, too, just down the road in indiana, and what the farmers are telling us across the country is that they know that our country has been ripped off by china for too long. they know they have been held back by bad trade deals that have been made in the past for too long. so, they understand that the president is fighting to correct those things, whether it's replacing the bad nafta with the new us/canada/mexico agreement, whether it's dealing with china's unfair trade practices. but if we can get through this and the president is working to get through it, then we'll all be better off in the end. so, that's why i think farmers are still continuing to show strength and their support for president trump and they will continue to do that, as long as they know that he's fighting for them. >> you got

the iowa poll came out, howard is familiar with the iowa poll. what it showed is biden had lost a third of his support since december, still the front runner eight points behind sanders, and right behind him, elizabeth warren, pete buttigieg. the enthusiasm level was not as high as that of the others. so he's got his work cut out for him. i quite agree with howard, i don't think it's nearly enough to say that he wants to defeat donald trump. i'm not sure it's enough that polls show right now he may have the best chance to do it. he will have to show more. this was only his second visit to iowa since may. you know, the process, this is a process. it's not a national primary. it begins in iowa. joe biden as the front runner is obligated to win that primary. if he comes in second or third, the whole thing could unravel. so he's got a lot of work to do. >> governor dean to be honest as he has run before, he has never done well in presidential races, so a lot of people, a lost democrats are sort of looking at him because his name recognition is high.

they want that here in iowa. the more people know me, the more i meet them, the more they hear, things will change. >> "the des moines register candidate tracker says you have held 13 events in eight days in iowa and started visiting the state before you announced. so not one person named you as their first choice. >> well, ana, again, i joined this race three weeks ago. i was the last major candidate to announce. and the information is just starting to flow. look, i've been an underdog in lots of elections and ended up winning them all. what happens with most voters, most caucus-goers, they don't decide until quite late. in fact, a major figure in the iowa democratic party told me a few days ago that his rule of thumb is that people don't really pay attention until the final ten days in terms of the actual final decision they're going to make. there is a huge amount of information that's going to flow. i'm going to crisscross the state and a number of other states, too. and i'll tell you something. i think democ

joe biden, well, he's back to iowa tomorrow.id the des moines register" poll offers the first glimpse of fact oregon into the new caucus rules, you can pick your candidate in person or do it online. joe biden, yes, he's your front-runner. this combines likely democratic caucus-goers, those who will show up in person or be in the virtual caucuses online. this combines the results. biden is your front-runner but at 24, much lower than he is in most national polls. bernie sanders in second at 16, but, look, 16, 15, 14, sanders, warren, buttigieg, that's a statistical tie for second, third and fourth place. kamala harris rounds out the top five, but front-runner but not exactly a gang buster front-runner. take a deeper look at the poll here. ask hillary clinton circa 2007 or 2015 about enthusiasm n.iowa, she was the front-runner in both of those races. biden backers who are going to show up in person, are thee extremely enthusiastic? only 29% of biden backers say that while 39% of those who have another candidate say they, teamly en
