it's clear to me that iowa democrats take our democracy seriously. i want to thank youfor that . [applause] because of so many folks who have said tonight this is a time of real danger for our democracy. i was a civil rights attorney before i came to congress my focus was voting rights and in my whole state of texas many of the attacks we see across the country havebeen going on for years . texas has one of the states strictest voter registration laws and vote by mail laws and has never met a gerrymander that it didn't like. but what is new in texas and here in iowa and across the country is this idea that if one party doesn't win the election, then the election itselfmust have been fraudulent . they have to overthrow the results of that election. that were not going to accept what happens in our elections. it's an idea that is so toxic to our democracy, so corrosive to our process and it left thousands of our fellow citizens to attack the capital in an effort to overturn an american presidentialelection . and i was there on january 6. on the house f

what about iowa?sees as their base. are they still trying to make the case here? or is iowa's goose cooked? >> iowa is absolutely saying do not forget us. we have been long part of this process. their argument is, look, the people of iowa take this process so seriously. they really study it. they have all the candidates in their dining rooms. you have heard these stories again and again. iowa is arguing that if you take them with the other four early states altogether, that is demographically representative of the democratic party. so they are trying to stay in this. and i should say the penalty that the dnc imposed in the past is your delegates goent count if you don't listen to us and refrain from holding your primary. iowa may go ahead and do it any way and risk doing that. risk losing their delegates because it's such a big part of their state economy now for decades. >> with the 30 seconds left, look into your crystal pal. how different will this calendar look? where will i find myself in another

i was going to des moines, iowa, which is where i went this morning for. a great event, and of course those children in des moines, iowa work very concerned about the children here. and they sent a little box of one classroom rooms worth of supplies to give to the children here with their love. the des moines actually has about i think they said around a dozen students who have come up from the gulf coast who are in school there now not at the school that i happen to visit but at other schools in the des moines school district, so really around the country in almost every state. children who've been displaced because of hurricane karina are starting to school this week. it's really important for parents to make sure their children go to school. it's important for their children to have a normal life to have the structure and the routine of going to school and especially since many children have suffered really have seen and separate a lot of really terrible things. so it's important to have the safe structure of that a school gives you so i want to thank a
