this is what isaac looks like from the international space station tonight. a massive swirl of energy, hundreds of miles across. and this is isaac from the wet and windy streets of new orleans where trees are falling. power lines are snapping, transformers blowing under the strain of those powerful gusts. after a handful of arrests of looters taking advantage of evacuated homes, sheriff, police and national guard are out in force tonight. but once the winds reach over 60 miles an hour, many parishes refuse to respond to 911 calls from those who chose to stay and ride it out. and after spending billions to shore up the levee system that broke here seven years back, the infamous 17th street canal is having no problem containing isaac so far tonight. there are some surges that are going over some roads. we're hearing reports, also over 200,000 people without power so far tonight. when this thing blows past, it's going to be a sweltering few days here in louisiana. now, to get a full picture, as mentioned, let's check in with our abc news extreme weather team star

this in motion and talk about what we are expecting when it comes to the next 12-24 hours and isaac. it looks like as we head through the next six hours isaac will intensify to a hurricane when the national hurricane center is saying right now. but then it looks like it's going to show down. that means louisiana and new orleans, yeah, we're concentrated could be experiencing hurricane force winds, as we head throughout 24 to 48 hours, so the damage is hard to gauge. here in our own neck of the wids, another story to tell. a day in the 50s, 60s, 61 in san jose. headed toward a comfortable afternoon. 89 degrees at 4:00 and 74 bay side and 63 at the coast. help you make those weekend plans. it is the final within of summer for many but we're noticing already a lot of kids out on the roads with their parents. how do they look? >> probably looking tired. that's the way i would head to school. hillsborough starting their school year so we're looking to 101 at embarcadero, there is an accident reported there. it's a fender bender no. injuries and founds like all of the activity is off to the shoulde

beyond that, we look for essentially a move to the north and some of the rains off of isaac likely to eventually impact not just the midwest here. there could be flooding illinois south and showers as the system disperses. models all curving now. this will mean eventually into monday and tuesday, scattered showers for maryland. again, has you look at new orleans right now seven and a half inches of rain have fallen and we have very few cameras operating on the gulf coast, lost of power widespread. look at the heavy rain coming in to southern alabama. this is the alabama gulf coast. orange beach not too far away. this is not even the heart of the storm but you get an idea how wild the weather s8 csh-- is. 85 now mat bwi. as bad as it's been in parts of the united states, it's been as good as it gets. the sunshine's out. the dew point is low. the humidity is dry. all that humidity is south of us in virginia. you see the widespread spiraling rains reaching into south carolina nea. watch as we go forward in time a slow moving system. the heavy rains will be slow to leave louisia

isaac looked strong this morning, weaker through the eastern central caribbean. now south of haiti. very warm water. a lower shear environment. just what we need to see. getting better organized here. we will see what kind of storm we have in the morning but the power house storm and the track of this will bring it over cuba as a result the storm will weaken and high mountains will probably be flooding rains. the trakas we look toward florida has been adjusted westward more and more so, most of the models pushing it west, further west. as a result it looks like perhaps it's a glancing blow for southwest florida and more of a central panhandle into mississippi and alabama storm if it redevelops in to a hurricane this is way out. this is five-days out. sort of in the land of voodoo for hurricane forecasting but we will see what happening. right now looks like the convention may be okay. tonight 64, partly cloudy, patchy late fog. sun and clouds, how much cloud cover in patches tomorrow afternoon. if we get a lot of cloud cover, maybe down in the low and mid80s. tomorrow night a late s

let's get started with a look at isaac. heavy rain into florida up towards tampa.he main event here is still in the gulf of mexico and isaac looking more impressive. pressure has been falling overnight now. 990millibars if you are interested in that kind of thing. with that pressure falling, they are likely to continue to intensify. lots of very warm water. temperatures ily to become a hu here in the next 12 to 24 hours. unfortunately, it looks like it will make a direct path here towards new orleans and sort of a worst case scenario because the right side of the storm is the strongest part of the storm. that will put pressure on ponchartrain. we did have rain yesterday here, rain in excess of 3 inches from appear appear list up towards baltimore. i think we'll see more sunshine and warmer temperatures today. back into the mid- to upper 80s later this afternoon. there is a look at your satellite-radar. still a couple of pesky showers across the eastern shore and we'll get a nice break. we'll see some sunshine during the day today and then a cold front will get in h

isaac. things look pretty good this morning. no rain gear is needed. lots of sunshine.ick up the sunglasses as you head out and the sunscreen. we look at wind speeds and calm in baltimore but you can see the direction in dc coming out of the northwest. so you can see the cold front has moved through the area and that's going to be the name of the game as we go through time. isaac is moving off towards the west northwest at about 7 miles an hour. the last time i showed you this,it was station air crane moving inland. it's -- area, it was moving inland. it's dropping rain in spots that have not gotten the rain. you can see the oranges and that is tremendous rainfall and it will continue throughout the rest of today and tonight and tomorrow. and then as we head into time, next week, we could be seeing the remnants of isaac coming our way. so we will be getting in wet weather as well. we look at satellite and radar right now. and high pressure will begin to move in through here. the cold front sliced through and dry weather will be the name of the game as we go through the

that is a fair observation if you look at this by the people in the florida keys right now, particularly key west. that's the bull's-eye right now. tropical storm isaac, rainmaker. yes, hurricane not yet. want you to look at these people on miami beach right now. no emergency there. just high winds and a challenging day on the beach. there's plenty to worry about in the gulf coast of florida, though. tropical storm isaac chugging its way north and west of the path projected just a few days ago. want to bring in our meteorologist now, cnn's chad myers in the severe weather center. exactly, chad, where is this storm officially expected, when and where to make landfall? >> it probably made landfall just a few minutes ago right near ft. jefferson near an island in the key west chain, but there's not a bridge there so you have to take a boat. key west is right there. that's the end. and tmoving right over the top f that into the gulf of mexico here. and that water right here is hot. that's all i can say about it. very, very warm. we are still seeing quite a few rain bands coming onshore here across parts of south florida. any one of those bands can rotate

let's take a look at the current statistics. isaac downgraded from hurricane status to a strong tropical storm. why is it losing strength? you have to remember, similar to central florida, this part of louisiana extremely low lying. there's no elevation so a lot of warm lake water and swamp waters. the hurricane is feet -- feeding off the swampy areas. that's helping to keep the storm alive and strong and fetching moisture out of the gulf waters. so we're going to continue to have significant flooding issues across all of louisiana and flooding along with lightning always our top weather killer. you see the reach of isaac even as a tropical storm all the way into northern alabama, all the way into atlanta, all of georgia under the clouds from the outer bands of now tropical storm isaac. as we look at the future path, it will slowly crawl. we're talking five-mile-an-hour movement. it with take 10 hours to go 50 miles. that's the obvious math. it shows how much flooding it could generate through central louisiana. here's the future proj

this is what katrina looked like and isaac looks like. two completely different storms because by this time in the forecast, we were already seeing and i know you have heard about this katrina comparison, but katrina was already a cat 3, so that does not work. and here it is driving into the bayou south of new orleans and could go to gulfport or back here to new iberia, but the center of the cone, which is getting smaller now, because the storm is closer and the center of the storm is somewhere near the mouth of the mississippi around maybe 6:00 or 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow night. >> chad, i have to ask you, any chance at all that this could become like a katrina and grow that big? >> there is always that chance and always a chance and anyone at the hurricane center will tell you that the, they know the path pretty good at 24 hours, but it is impossible to tell that that storm is going to literally get its act together and pull arms in like an ice skater doing a big circle in the middle, and it is impossible for them to tell if it will explod

time now to look at what's happening with isaac. look at these rain bands stretching through into parts of southern florida already. isaac just continues to have copious amounts of rainfall. a lot of convection as well. and let's take a look at vipir. you can see where the center of the storm is, as it pushes into the gulf. this is where it will heat up and get more energy. it's been kind of slowing. once it gets over the warmer weather, we'll have to keep an eye on it to see how strong it will become. we're going to take a look at the models and give you a look at the track as well to where this storm is headed. currently maxium sustained winds, 65 miles per hour. it's moving at about 14 miles per hour. here's a look at the track now. by monday, it's expected category 1 hurricane. before land fall, a category 2 hurricane. this is the cone of uncertainty here. it could actually make landfall anywhere within this area. it could shift more to the west. shift more to the east. this is just a lot of variables here that make it uncertain. now
