reporter tori apodaca breaks it down for us >> reporter: although smaller, the people in isleton sayhey still felt shaking this morning and it has some people worried a bigger one may be on the way. >> i've been having nightmares two times about that i'm in an earthquake. >> reporter: there is what the 4.2 magnitude quake looked like from inside jack's country store in isleton last wednesday. around 7:45 monday morning miriam carbohall once again felt shaken. the aftershock was reported as a 4.2 magnitude quake, downgraded to a 2.9 followed by a 2.5 quake an hour later. >> the sediments have a tendency to make the earthquake look bigger. >> reporter: aftershocks are common and the earthquakes have been hitting soft soils near the midland fault beneath the western edge of central valley. >> when they hit soft soils, they tend to slow down and they get bigger and that results in higher shaking levels. >> reporter: that's what happened during the loma prieta earthquake 34 years ago, when a freeway about 60 miles from santa cruz, collapsed. >> this is where people come in and do retrofit

isleton is a small city, only about 800 people. they have not reported any damage, but the shaking was enough to knock a few things off store shelves, as you can see there. a liquor store, as you can see. not enough to scare the woman working behind the counter. >> the way i see the shelves going like that, i thought the whole store would fall on me. it was not something i have experienced, i don't want to experience it again. >> my kitchen light started shaking, then the counter started g.st kind of braced myself a little bit. >> plenty of people felt shaking and antioch and other parts of the east bay. usgs first reported the quake as a magnitude 4.6 , it was ultimately downgraded to a 4.2, but for many of you using the myshake app , initially showed a 5.7. usgs says that is normal. >> initial magnitude has to be estimated very quickly, within just a couple seconds of the earthquake starting in order to provide a useful alert to the population. >> the quake briefly brought b.a.r.t. trains to a halt systemwide. one x user posted t

you can see where the epicenter was, near isleton.n the lighter shades of blue, that tells you this was felt lightly to moderately but it was felt over a widespread area. a lot of it has to do with the fact of where this epicenter was. if we remove the did you feel at information and the magnitude and in the map that shows us where the earthquake faults are across the bay, you can see the san andreas here. there is the hayward. the closest fault on this map would be the greenbelt and that moved its way toward the east bay but this was not on that. this was on a known fault that picks up some of this movement called the midland fault. it sits out here through the delta and you could likely get a lot more ground shaking heading toward the east. more people likely felt this in california even though the magnitude was fairly weak. let's get back to the real headline, the heat advisory goes from now until tomorrow night and it has the entire bay included in it. here is the first take away. it will be pretty hot. we will see some records br

i will just say that this on top of the really great overestimate of yesterday's earthquake in isleton alert system? you know, it's been kind of a not so great back to back days of mishaps for the alert system. >> the couple of things to keep in mind there, julian. first of all, you know, we know that alert went out at very early this morning and a number of people got it. undoubtedly, that caused some consternation and certainly some inconvenience for a number of folks who received that alert and were worried by it. but we really have to remember that, you know, is that inconvenience in any way outweighed by the value of these drills and of these applications that can in fact and have saved lives in the course of events like this? you know, you see the shake bus there that travels around california from our partners at cal oes. you know, it is it's scary, right, when that happens. and those alerts are important to pay attention to. and the other thing to keep in mind here is that these are drills and at the california earthquake authority, we drill constantly and we drill robustly. an
