for more on that, let's bring in our ivan watson, ivan, what have you learned so far? to see you by the way. >> good to see you too, martin. you'd be surprised to hear that of all the people to be almost applauding the syrian regime, we've got a u.s. senior administration official, martin, who's come out saying that the white house is surprised and encouraged by the amount of information that syria has now shared about its chemical weapons arsenal. and it's not just the u.s. that was asking for this information for today's deadline. this was part of an agreement hammered out by the u.s. and russia last week. and that agreement really stipulated that syria had to come fully clean about not only what kinds of chemical weapons it has, but how much of them, where they're stored, where they're produced and where their research and development facilities are. and that information, some of it appears to have actually been handed over to this organization that's in charge of disposing of these chemical weapons. their experts are now reviewing this document. and with intelligen

ivan watson is live in istanbul.ives of the inspectors as they go about this critical job of finding the chemical weapons? >> reporter: that's a good question because those that were in syria last month, one of their tasks, the u.n. says, is to go to a town where one of the first alleged incidents of chemical weapons use came up around march 19th of this year when more than 20 people died as a result of something, some kind of suspicious weapon that did not leave blood stains or cuts or obvious bullet holes on the bodies of the victims and that's very close to the northern city of aleppo which is still very much split between rebel forces and government forces. it's important to note, as you mentioned, these u.n. inspectors were in the country just last month and they did an investigation into a much larger and deadlier alleged weapons attack and they concluded that sarin gas has been used near damascus. ashleigh? >> ivan watson, thank you for that. >>> when we come back, a developing story in kenya as those investig

here's more now from ivan watson. >> reporter: fredericka, mixed results here in turkey to obama's announcement that he was going to delay any type of military action against syria. the turk irk government has been very hawkish about any possible military operation led by the u.s. against the syrian regime. the turkish government clearly wants it and calling for regime change in damascus and after obama's announcement one turkish official wrote me, quote, we are not thrilled with the delay and uncertainty obama's announcement will bring. however, he also indicated that the turkish government does respect the democratic decision-making processes inside the u.s. when it comes to the use of military force. now, the syrian policy here in turkey, a majority muz lick country, also a close ally of the u.s., is very divisive. while the government wants a u.s.-led military operation, many turks are uncomfortable with this and that was repeated at peace day, so-called peace day rallies that were held in cities around the country. this is an annual rally and demonstration that takes place but it probably

. >> ivan watson in new york to talk about this.ust up in that neck of the woods on the syria/turkey border. islamists are better fighters and have won key battles for the rebels but this situation, where groups with common names are fighting and killing each other must be worrying observers and there's one particular battle going on in the last couple of days. >> that's right. it's the second day of fighting now, michael, between the more moderate rebels from the free syrian army and al qaeda-linked group of rebels, hard line group, called the islamic state of iraq and syria or isis, a strategic here near the turkish border. fighting under way for a second day. these al qaeda fighters, these are tough cookies, you could say. a lot of foreign jihady volunteers, many have come through turkey to syria to volunteer and fight. they're from places like north africa, chechnya, all over the world, really. and they really frighten many syrians i've been talking to because they've been imposing on opposite controlled parts of syria hard line

and we have cnn's ivan watson for that. ivan, good to see you. what's on the agenda?ody around me was speaking turkish because the turkish president was arriving at his hotel. lots of plain clothes and security officers in turkey. there are 1300 of their own civilians with chemical weapons. the russian foreign minister being quoted on his website accusing the u.s. of blackmail, arguing that the u.s. is threatening to pull out of a recent agreement between russia and the u.s. on disarming the arsenal of chemical weapons if russia doesn't agree to sign on to a united nations security council. they're threatening the use of force if syria doesn't completely comply with disarmament. so the russians taking more stabs at the u.s. though sur guy lovelet also suggested that russia is willing to send perhaps troops or military police to help protect any disarmament experts that eventually could get on the ground in syria to remove that deadly arsenal of chemical weapons. there is a conversation between the new president of iran and president obama. we'll see if that happens. i

we have ivan watson following this for us from new york. good morning.. according to the agreement that russia and the u.s. hammered out, this is supposed to be comprehensive. quote, a comprehensive list of names and types and quantities of chemical weapons and storage and production and research and development facilities. syria is expected to hand overall of the information about the chemical weapons arsenal. the agency charged with disposing of these chemical weapons, if everything goes forward as planned, its technical experts have gotten together and reviewing this list as we speak. jessica. >> the u.n. general assembly is meeting next week, ivan, a lot on their plate. how significant of a topic of situation will syria be? >> reporter: i'm sure it will be in the background of the discussions that are going on. unfortunately, however, a bit of the time frame for the u.n.'s security council to meet and to adopt and approve a resolution on syria. that seems to have slipped somewhat. some of this has to do with the logistics going on here. the organizat
