ivan watson who's just been doing some of the most stellar work in country joins us live now. ellite delay. but i'm going to throw to question to you about how it is you got that access in that prison. can you sort of set the scene for why you were there and how you got there? >> reporter: we crossed the border from iraqi kurdistan to the kurdish-controlled part of northern syria where the kurds have basically been in charge for about three years. and they've been fighting isis on the ground in a vicious war now for over a year. i think showing us these prisoners is part of the propaganda war that they are fighting with isis. they want to demystify their opponents, spread the word of some of their alleged atrocities and let us see these men looking weak and defenseless in front of us. it was strange to hear from one of these men after the other. i asked all of them, what would happen if you had encountered me when you were with isis, when you were free? and each of them said, you would be killed. you are an american journalist. and the 19-year-old we talked to said, yeah, we wo

let's go to the cnn correspondent ivan watson with more on the ground there. ning, ivan. >> reporter: good morning, john. we want to show you footage that cnn obtained of the medicine that was delivered in the air drops reaching the besieged town of kobani behind me. a doctor we have been in touch with for weeks who had to move his clinic at least four times because it had been shelled at different locations. speaking to the camera and describing how he had received medicine and aesthetics and bandages and antibiotics. all of the precious medicine life-saving stuff they need to help civilians and fighters who have been hit in this isis siege and asking for more assistance. now, we know that the u.s. has been carrying out air strikes against the isis attackers around the town behind me. we had these air drops coming from u.s. c-130 planes and now turkey and the government in northern iraq of the iraqi kurdish region announcing they will be sending iraqi kurdish peshmerga fighters through turkey to help reinforce the kurdish militants defending this city now for

. >> i want you to listen to what they tell our ivan watson, not just about what went on inside that ommunity, but also how they say that ivan would be treated had he been captured. listen to this. >> we are in a prison run by the kurdish militants here in northern syria and we're being introduced to prisoners that the kurds tell us were members of isis. the prisoners are brought in blindfolded and we quickly begin to wonder whether they're being forced to speak to us. during our visit here, the guards, who ask not to be shown, do not allow us to see the cells where the prisoners are being held. this man trembles with fear as a prison guard removes his blindfold. i introduce myself as an american journalist and he begins to relax a little. he tells me he's a syrian named suleiman, he confesses to being part of an isis cell that planted and detonated a remote controlled car bomb outside a kurdish base and says he received around $3,600 for completing the job what is the idea that isis is fighting for? >> translator: they said they were fighting for islam and justice. they were lying to

our ivan watson is there. he joins us live with more of the details. ivan, a very heavy police presence turned up pretty quickly. are they still keeping these two sides apart? >> reporter: they are. they are. as you can see, this is the direction of the protest encampment and there's a substantial amount of police over here. this is one of the areas where there was a confrontation with these opposing the protesters. if we swing over here, i'll bring you over in this direction, john. this is part of where the confrontation came from. this over here, i estimate there are 20 or 30 hong kong taxis in bright red with a sign identifying them as a taxi driver union. and what they tell me is the taxi drivers are fed up with the damage to their business that blocking off a couple of main highways to downtown hong kong is doing to them, and so they came in and basically wanted to push through the barricades of the protest encampment and open the way and they tell me they were trying from two opposite directions at the same time. so we have witnessed some of these

and for more on turkey's position and the battle against isis our ivan watson was given a rare tour of some of its fortifications along the syrian border. >> reporter: how do you protect your country from what are arguably at least three civil wars being fought simultaneously across the border? one measure that the turkish government has adopted is to simply build a ditch, a big, deep, and long one with turkey on this side and syria right over there. but it's not just trying to keep syrian threats out from spilling over into turkey, the turkish government says in the last couple days they've detained at least 20 people, mostly europeans and russians who they suspect were trying to smuggle their way into syria to join isis. it's from border posts like this that the turkish military is trying to control its frontier with syria. so from this guard tower, this unit is in charge of about 5, 6 kilometers of border. that's about 3 miles. and the biggest concern is the smugglers who they say try to get through the border every day. let's pull in our senior international correspondent, ivan watson, live in hong kong. lk about the latest information here, ivan. i'm wondering, with the talks off the table, and student leaders calling for more protests throughout the weekend, are we back to square one here? the same place we were two weeks ago. >> you can make that argument. the students say they have to get demonstrators back out into the streets here. back into this encampment here that has been under way for a week and a half, blocking off a stretch of highway in downtown hong kong. to keep up the pressure on the hong kong government. that's after the number two official in the hong kong government announced the talks would be broken off with much regret, the basis for constructive dialogue had been seriously undermined. the students are calling on follow demonstrators to come in here in large numbers, bringing this time, for the first time, tents and sleeping bags. and they're calling for a longer-term occupy process. and as one of the student leaders put it, he said that they wanted to get answer

ivan watson joining me from the iraqi city of irbil where those fighters have left. an, when will they get there? do we know? >> well, they say tomorrow, but the fact is, this deal was announced more than a week ago and it's taken more than a week of negotiations and some open disagreements before this relatively small contingent of iraqi kurds departed. it's just 161 iraqi kurdish fighters that turkey has said will be allowed to transit through turkey to help reinforce the kurdish fiteghters. they've said they don't need men, they need weapons. and that's part of the deal. iraqi kurds are supposed to be bringing heavy weapons as part of this convoy to help their kurdish brothers battle the jih jihadi militants in that border town. >> we have been watching so closely the status of this town, this symbolic significance of this battle. ivan watson, thank you so much for me from iraq. i want you to look at this now. video of red hot lava in hawaii. creeping dangerously close to a number of homes there. live picture obviously on the right side from the skies coming down.

our senior correspondent, ivan watson, joins us from hong kong with the latest.s we move into this weekend, what can we expect from the crowds around you? how are they reacting to the government pulling out of correct talks? >> reporter: some of the protests, the student leaders just gave a short press conference moments ago. this was in response, as you mentioned, to the government announcing it was suspending talks with the community leaders because they felt it would not lead anywhere positive. take a listen to what one of the excerpts from one of the student leaders, joshua wong, what he had to say. >> they come to occupy the row outside of the headquarters. come to bring the pens to show our persistence on the long action. in these days or two weeks ago, we just come here and stay for one or two nights and go back to our home. but after they tried to stop the students, we need to show our anger and persistence with the long-term occupy action. >> reporter: an appeal for protesters to bring tents, to bring sleeping bags. and basically, to set up a longer-term

ivan watson breaks down this surprising alliance. >> reporter: meet america's newest de facto alliesn its coalition against isis. these are kurdish fighters from a group that calls itself the ypg, or people's protection units, and within the last week, the u.s. for the very first time began dropping assistance to ypg fighters defending the syrian town, the border town of kobani against isis militants, and the u.s. air power has also been striking isis militants that have been laying siege to that town to support this faction. now, the ypg, if you look at their iconography, if thyou loo at their symbols, they seem very similar to another kurdish faction in the middle east known as the kurdistan worker's party. and here's where it gets complicated. the pkk is considered a terrorist organization by america's nato ally, turkey because it's been fighting a guerilla war for some 30 years against turkey. the u.s. officially labels the pkk a terrorist organization. and less than five years ago, the u.s. was helping turkey bomb pkk fighters in the mountains of northern iraq. but now the enemy

ivan watson has more, what are the crowds like there this morning?rter: well, you know, we spoke at this time yesterday anderson, and there were far fewer people. in fact, more people and kids spent the night out here under torrential rains overnight. they -- the rain, the thunder, the lightning did not dampen their enthusiasm. and neither did statements coming from the hong kong government, which repeated the fact it believes the protests are illegal, stating that china will not compromise with these illegal demands. and that the protesters must disband immediately. and despite that and despite the inclement weather there are more people out here in part possibly because it is a national holiday today. a holiday that is supposed to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china under communist party rule. but instead of those official celebrations, what you have here is an ongoing mass civil disobedience. >> and today, they say their demands, now, if the government in kmien doesn't bend what happens next? >> well, some o

here's ivan watson with a firsthand account of what they' been made to suffer. >> this girl was a 19-year-old high school senior with dreams of becoming a doctor when isis first came to her village. >> translator: they came to the village and said you have to convert to islam or we will kill you. >> she's from a community of ethnic kurds from the yazidi minority. soon after, she said isis ordered the entire village to go to the school where they stole all the people's jewelry, money and cell phones and then separated the men from the women. according to a united nations report, isis gathered all males older than 10 years of age, took them outside the village and shot them. a different fate lay in store for the women. >> they separated the girls and the women who had children and the old women. they took us girls to mosul, to a big three-story house. >> jana says there were hundreds of girls in the house and they got visits from the men of isis. >> they came to the room and looked around at the girls and if they like one, they chose her and took her. if the girls cried and didn't want

ivan watson introduces us to the women of people's protection unit. >> these women are part of a militiathe most deadly enemy in syria. kurdish fighters from the people's protection units or ypg. they fought isis on the ground in syria for more than a year. only recently, they started getting help from the u.s. in the form of air strikes and weapons drops. a surprising turn of events for this secular movement, which includes many fighters who have long battled america's nato ally, turkey. >> an important part of this kurdish movement is founded on gender equality. that means female fighters fight and bleed on the front lines. and that stands in sharp contrast to isis which has been covering women up and hiding them from public life. >> our dream is to build a democratic society that includes arabs, christians, and kurds. living together in unity. >> the kurds call their region roguva. some of them clearly proud of their experiment in self-rule. but the streets here feel empty. many of the towns christian residents have fled and more keep leaving. >> this is a sad day for your family. why
