j&j we don't have formal data yet to say that they're in that high category, but there's circu circumstantial evidence that suggests it will be okay because the jica, in south africa did really quite well against a variant that is probably as bad or even worse in many respects than the delta variant. also and probably the most important explanation, don, is that the astrazeneca vaccine, which is used in the context of the delta variant, was shown with two doses to be about 88% effective. the vaccine of j&j is just about the same type of vaccine. it's the same type of a platform, an anti-virus vector as the az. so you can make a reasonable assumption if the az is good against the delta, the j&j even if you haven't formally proved it is highly likely going to be just as good against the delta variant. >> okay, so i was kind of joking with some guys as we were walking to work today and we were talking about the delta variant. and i said i'm just going to get another pfizer shot and i'll be doubly vaccinated, just kind of -- in all seriousness is there some truth to that? people who have taken the j&j vaccine might some of us need a booster for thi

if you're somebody that got the j&j vaccine and see the statistics and say, i wish i got the pfizer, do you wait for jwe think will happen or is there risk in mixing the vaccines? >> so j&j has apparently completed a two-dose trial and will hopefully get the data soon. it look us like a single dose of vaccine though not as protective is probably pretty good against severe critical disease and could say what's the downside of a booster dose of an mrna vaccine? there is reasonable but there's not a data to look at that. i don't think it's unreasonable. >> getting a different vaccine, if they got the ms. on top of the j&j is there a personal health risk to that? >> no. i don't think so. it's that there are data generated in the uk and canada looking at the j&j vaccine or astrazeneca and then mixing and matching by then giving them and some data on that but i don't think it's a health risk. >> you think it's a net positive if you did it? >> i think it's a like lynette positive. >> thank you for coming on. come on, parents, get the kids vaccinated. thank you. >>> thank you all for being with us this hour.

j, they sure are. >> that's right, alex. i think this may have a bigger impact on the global distribution rather than the domestic one, because j&j a proportion of the vaccines that are out there. moderna and pfizer have made the bulk of it. the concern is that the initial mis-hap said back production for moderna and johnson & johnson doses. they were both produced at that plant. so the delay hurt. here's the tough part with the 10 million that are being released. i think vaccines are emergently needed around the world for reasons we've talked about, the impact it's having on many health care systems, but i do get concerned about the fda warning that comes with it that says that they can't guarantee that this is potentially a plant that may have issues. as you said, that has a pr issue even if it's not a safety issue, it may have a pr impact i'm concerned about. >> pfizer, great they're stepping up and helping to fill the void, but ideally speaking, globally, particularly in hard-to-reach places, having one shot is a lot easier to guarantee people are going to have efficacy against the virus than two shots. they may not come back

j&j get a booster with an mrna vaccine. there's been a lot of questions whether americans need boosters and when they'll need boosters. what's your take on that >> many americans aren't going to be required to need boosters i think it's going to be reserved for a certain segment of the population people who are older, more at risk for covid, further out from completing their original vaccination >> reporter: tonight an evolving virus and yet another shift on where and when to wear a mask miguel almaguer, nbc news >> i spoke to dr. anthony fauci a short time ago to get some clarity on some of the conflic conflicting advice on mask wearing do you expect the cdc to change its guidelines for unvaccinate american snz. >> i know we're going to be seeing a sticking to the guideline. we know the vaccines we're using in this country do very well against the delta variant. you have to take that variant seriously. it's nothing to just pooh-pooh because it spreads more rapidly than the original virus and it can cause more serious disease but for now the cdc recommendation stands if in fact you are vaccinated, fully vaccinated, you are protected and you do not need to wear a mask outdoors or indoors. >> is it a given in your opinion that the delta variant will become the predominant variant in this country? and what does that mean for unvaccinated people >> well, there's very little doubt, lester, that the delta variant is not going to become the dominant every country that it has gone into up to now you've seen an escalation in cases where it's pushed aside the variant that was dominant before it so particularly in those under-vaccinated parts of the country, almost certainly you are going to see the delta variant take over which, again, i have to say it again, lester, it's such an important imperative of why those regions, those people need to get vaccinated to protect themselves, to protect their community, to protect their family >> there have been some well-respected experts who are talking about after receiving the j&j vaccine, going back and getting a booster, if you will, of either pfizer or moderna. is that concerning to you, or do you think that they may be onto something? >> from an opinion of physicians around the country many of them, maybe all of them are really well-meaning and quite competent, they're doing that but they're doing it on the hunch that it will work and be safe. when you get a formal recommendation from a regulatory agency or a public health agency like the fda and the cdc respectively, that will be based on data that's accumulated we're not there yet. that doesn't mean it's not going to ultimately happen, but the data don't show that right now >> i do want to ask you when we get into the fall is there any risk of another wave or a surge in covid or are the worst days behind us? >> well, what we're going to see likely is two separate situations, lester if you are fully vaccinated, it is extremely unlikely that you're going to see a surge. if you are unvaccinated in those po

so the 12 million americans who have gotten the j&j vaccine, my advice for them is hold tight, do not get nervous about this because i believe the j vaccine will hold up well. but we need a little bit more data and it may be that some of those people need a booster shot. but at this point i think most of the evidence suggests that the j&j vaccine is working really quite well. >> and, as a result of this delta variant, the w.h.o. is now urging vaccinated people to mask up. do you agree with that guidance even if people have received the highly effective pfizer and moderna vaccines? >> yeah. my general feeling is if you received the highly effective pfizer/moderna vaccines and you're in a largely vaccinated community, it isn't necessary to wear a mask. but if there are high levels of community transmission and high levels of unvaccinated people, there will be breakthrough infections. and so wearing a mask in that context makes sense. but, otherwise, i would say that you don't to be wearing a mask, especially if you're around other vaccinated people. >> and if this highly infectious delta variant isn't enough to convince those people
