with me retired four-star general jack keane. that's how i see it. once you look like you are not going to follow through, we're through. >> you are actually right about that. the largest strategic issue which is certainly impacting the middle east is simply the fact that this administration has made a policy decision, unstated to all of us, and that is to disengage from the middle east. and it's driving their policy, they believe the iraq war was bad. the afghanistan war took too long and they want to do anything that would ever get us involved again in the middle east. the problem with that strategy is we have to stay engaged in the middle east, otherwise, the radial islamists are all in and they will take advantage of that policy and they have been doing that in libya, in magli, in yemen, syria and now in iraq. neil: would air strikes change the equation, if we were to conduct the bombardment campaign of the insurgent strongholds, would that change anything? too little too late? >> it would have quite an impact. for our viewers to understand, from

retired four star general jack keane. then what, general?> well, the fact of the matter is, it's certainly understandable. isis has a major sanctuary in syria. obviously they have another one now in iraq. the client state of iran is syria. they certainly don't want the assad regime to be threatened by this organization. however, the iraqi regime is clearly being threatened by it. so i believe that either they're approving or they're directing you know, some of the syrian air power to be used against isis. i don't see it as a sustained air campaign that will make all that much difference, quite frankly. but it's certainly understandable why they're using it. >> you know, general, what i don't understand is iran is fighting, reportedly, in western iraq or syria. iran is getting involved in this crisis. and they harbor even worse anxieties about isis than it would appear we do. what am i missing here? what do you know about isis that has even well-known terrorists terrorized? >> well, isis, you know, founded by a jordanian, they began in iraq.

to explore the military side of the controversy, retired four-star general jack keane. welcome back to fox news sunday. >> always good to be here. >>> we've heard a lot from the politicians this week about the military principle leave no soldier behind. is that true even in a case like this where bowe bergdahl at least walked off his post and may have deserted? >> yes, definitely. if he defected, that would be another matter. we would not go after him. there would be no rescue or negotiations for him. but this is still a united states soldier and we want to bring him home and we want a full accounting of what took place and his behavior. everyone in the administration certainly knows that he deserted his post. that is a fact. they are not going to make a lot of statements about that because frankly we want this soldier to come home and be questioned by an expert and let's get all the facts on the table. if it drives us to a court martial, so be it. we don't want him right now in germany with a lawyer because we're making statements that would have to protect him in his
