we stocked with jackie speier after she sent a scathing letter to the secretary of defense. she is demanding action after a whistle blower told her about a facebook page showing images denigrating women in the military. cheryl hurd joins us in san francisco. who is behind this facebook page. >> reporter: that is the big question. no one knows who is behind it. the pictures are really hard to look at. that is why they got the attention of representative jackie speier and she immediately took action. the letter written by jackie speier includes pictures of the various pages posted by someone who goes by a fake name. it shows pictures of women. they all have lewd captions and all are not appropriate to show on tv without being alterred. the frightening statistic is that you are more likely to be raped by a fellow service member than you are to be wounded or killed by the enemy. >> reporter: in the letter representative speier told defense secretary chuck hagel that she wanted to bring their attention to the disturbing facebook page. she told them that there are numerous comment

jackie speier alerts marines to a certain facebook page.t that, if you can. >> well, we got a whistle-blower call tuesday that identified a number of pages went on facebook, that was absolutely grotesque. misogynistic sexual. and we reported it to facebook. we also -- a letter to secretary hagel and to the chief of staff of the marines and i said you know, do something about this. we already found out these are sites that are run by active military. and on taxpayer servers and on taxpayer time. so if heads don't roll on this, then help me! speier,esented jackie member of the armed services committee joining us. al assault in the military is the topic for this segment. representative speier, it seems to be a big increase in estimated sexual assaults in the military, 7000 cases. do you agree with the statistics that have come out from the recent report? why the increase? guest: the increase is close to a 83% from the last survey that was done in 2010. 33%.e increase is it is so disheartening because we have put a spotlight on this issue. we have had hearings in the capital. we have had big brass, talk about it. secretary leon panetta called it an epidemic. secretary hagel says he wants to address it and yet nothing changes. host: why the increase? is there reason given? guest: i think the fact that people are more likely to speak about the fact they been raped. naupa they will come forward, because only about 9% of the 26,000 actually filed a complaint. the reason for that is because more often than not if you file a complaint it is not taken seriously. only about 23% of those cases actually ge

jackie speier of california has repeatedly criticized the military for how it handles sexual assault cases. >> congress has known about this problem in the military for 25 years. we had lots of hearings, lots of reports, but are we willing to step up and do the right thing by taking it out of the chain of command so that the victims really have the freedom to report these crimes and feel that they are not going to be marginalized and labeled and then dismissed from the military? >> and on fop of all of this, tomorrow, tomorrow, the pentagon will release the annual report of sexual assaults in the military, which will show that sexual assaults in the military rose 6% from 2011 to 2012. joining me tonight, anu bhagwati. you've been very outspoken, you're a veteran, and you've been working on this issue. first, i want to get your reaction to this news tonight which had all of us shaking our heads that it was not an onion headline or something. >> it is shocking. but not surprising. we have been working on this for several years and we regularly see that field grade officers, even genera

congress wam jackie speier. >> the military culture has to be changed.f this attitude that boys will be boys. so you say you can't just say you can't feel this way. you need to legislate it. what would make things better? >> the criminal justice system within the military has to be reformed top to bottom. we're seeing minimal efforts to reform that system, but we need the senate to take leadership now, acknowledge that neither vick testimonies nor the accused are served well by the current system. there is not a system built on a fair and impartial process. right now it's commanding officers determining which criminal cases go forward. that's sex crimes as well as other crimes. we need trained attorneys and impartial judges overseeing a criminal justice system, whether it's in the military or the civilian world. we don't have that today in the military. >> another headline, an air force general decided to grant clemency to a convicted sex offender. lieutenant general susan helms nominated to the top spot in the air force command but her nomination has be
