kpix 5's jackie ward is live in our newsroom with the details on the man set to run bart's police department. jackie. >>> reporter: carlos rojas is coming to the bay from the orange county city of santa ana. the "chronicle" reports that bart officials will make this announcement today. at the end of his time in santa ana, the "orange county register" wrote that the city experienced a surge in shootings at the end of his term many gang-related from 2013 to 2016. the city was on pace for more than a shooting a day in the first 50 days of last year and during city council campaigns these shootings and rojas became a point of contention. there were even some rumors that they wanted rojas fired. he spent 27 years at the santa ana police department from patrol officer to police chief for three years. he also created a homeland security division in the department following 9/11. rojas oversaw more than 300 officer. at bart, he will have 227 officers. bart police is responsible for the safety in its 46 stations in four counties. jackie ward, kpix 5. >>> we're only one day away from earth day and tod

in oakland jacky ward, kpix5. >> the attorney representing the fire victims made a plea to bay area housing departments asking them to focus on maintenance of all living spaces. if city allocated $700,000 for fire victims. >> today marks 20 years since a deadly fire at an east palo alto home. some say it's the single largest unsolved murder case. 11 people were pulled from the fire. nine people died, five of those were children. investigators say the fire was intentionally started by someone who poured gasoline all over the cars parked at the home. on this 20th anniversary they're hoping someone comes forward with any information. on saturday friends and family of the victims will be holding a memorial service to remember the lives lost. >> a man accused of a deadly shooting rampage in oakland made an appearance before a judge this morning. this was the first time that we've seen the suspect in five years. >> reporter: he appeared in court today with shoulder length graying hair and a rather friendly demeanor. he did not enter a plea. his lawyer says that decision has not yet been made. >>

jackie ward kpix 5. >>> police are looking for the gunman that killed a woman while she was driving her children to day care. the shooting was captured on surveillance video. you can see the victim's car pull up to a stop sign and then the suspect pulls up next to her and fires. here's a picture of the suspect. he is 43-year-old desean mcbride. the children inside the car were not physically hurt. they are staying with relatives. >>> chopper 5 caught the aftermath on bow know avenue. it started yesterday afternoon when police got calls about shots fired in that area. when officers got to the scene they say the suspect drove out of the garage and started shooting at them. that is when a shootout broke out with officers and suspect was killed. one homeowner heard the whole thing. >> i was standing over here and heard 30-40 shots. i walked around here and all of these cops were coming in. >> several officers were injured in the shooting. luckily none of those injuries are serious. the name of the suspect that was killed has not been released. >>> man charged with an attempted kidnapping in
