this is a letter from the james madison papers. is is a letter that madison wrote to jefferson in the summer of 1788. james madison was one of the authors of the federalist essays and later on he would draft the amendments that would become the bill of rights. in this period, he was not sure yet of the bill of rights. in this letter to jefferson, he says the delay of a few years will assuage the jealousies artificially created and will point out the faults which really call for amendment. he thought it would take a little time before they knew it would need to be amended. what he is saying is that a bill of rights should wait until later on. this is thomas jefferson's reply. what jefferson does is she thinks madison for -- he thanks for the news but says he knew it already. madison has sent him a copy and jefferson says he already has a copy. jefferson flatters madison and says with respect to the federalist, the three authors have been named to me. he says i read it with care and pleasure and was satisfied there was nothing in it b

you know, james madison, who was the principal author of the of first amendment, he talked about freely examining public characters and so let's dissect that, first of all, free, freely operating, independent examining meaning. it's not meaning that we actually hold government officials to account real to account. we hold the people, the powerful individuals and institution ones that influence public policy to account. so examining the public characters are the politician, the other government official from the people who influence them and the measures or the policies that are implemented. so is why we have a first amendment in this country. that was the original intent. it's something that i believe any should understand, particularly they're taking an oath to the constitution of the united states, which they do. and it's that we in the past have to always keep mind our job is not stenography. it is journalism. and journalism beyond simply recording, people say, but looking at really looking at who's behind these policies, who are the policies intended to benefit, what kind of practic

turn to you felt because this issue of congress giving up authority, the constitution says it has james madison bit perplexed by this. you know, much of his to some degree involves the kind of low motives of human beings wanting to hold and wield as part of what the separation of power system, you know, working is. people want to guard the power that they have by virtue of being in the branch. yeah, that's as we all know delegation giving away a power to wield power has become allies. what why do members do that i mean, isn't power fun like why would they want to use it? yeah, the ambition counteracting ambition depends on sort of this individual sense of drive. and it has to be drive to do something, thus take the responsibility onto yourself than just ambition to be seen. that's where a lot of ambitions are channeled these days and it can't just be ambition to help your party win the next election. right. that's that's that's really the thing that dominates our our current political moment is the sense that oh, well, it really is so important for my party to win the next election. the ambitio
