. ♪♪ >> joining me now is texas state representative james talarico.our reactions to it. i'm sure your processing this like the rest of us. i just wanted to give you a chance to comment on what is happening today. >> thanks for having me. you know, it's been a years 19 babies and to public school teachers were massacred in a school in rob elementary in uvalde, texas. we have dead kids, again, at a shopping mall on the other side of texas. and in between those two tragedies, state lawmakers here in our state have done nothing to prevent these kinds of tragedies from happening in the future so i'm still processing this along with all your viewers and folks around the state of texas that i think it should lead us to have some serious questions about policy makers about why we continue to let this happen in our state. >> why do you think it's happening in your state? we know the numbers, we're seeing the images. even if it's not statistically something that everyone is aware of, we are hearing about it almost every other day. it seems like there is a mass

amy andrews and texas state representative james talarico. a lot to addressing that briefing. presentative talarico, let me just go back to the point that was asking you about before. we got the confirmation on the number of fatalities. i was actually quite struck by the comment of that woman that my colleague morgan chesky was talking to. basically saying, she wanted to move out. as a texas representative, your thoughts on the? >> i think we all stand with the community in allen in their grief. i want to say something about one of the speakers at that press conference, the republican congressman who represents allen in the u.s. house set earlier today that the solution to the epidemic of gun violence in our country is more poor. i believe in the power of prayer. i believe prayer can change lives and change the world, but there is simply deeply cynical about asking god to solve a problem that you're not going to solve yourself. got orcs through us. got as no other hands but our hands, and so i hope the congressman takes a moment to reflect on his participation in deeper and wha

joining us now is texas state representative james talarico, who you just on those clips. also joining me is michelle goldberg, opinion columnist for the new york times, and author of kingdom coming, the rise of christian nationalism. representative james talarico, first of all, i think a lot of people in texas are probably very thankful for the line of questioning and the oratory that you have given on the subject of a lot of these bills. how do your republican counterparts in the state house manage this line of criticism? that this is nothing more than a blatant attempt to install white christian nationalism in the public school system? >> well, first, thanks for having, me alex. thank you for covering this really important topic. i sometimes have republican colleagues who approach me in private after these exchanges on the house floor or in committee, and thank me for my questioning. we have still got common sense republicans here in our state who are the dragged to the right by maga republicans, christian nationalists in their primaries. and so there are some who are t

not only un-american, i think it's also deeply un christian. >> that was texas a representative james talaricoc school classrooms to display the ten commandments. representative talarico's arguments did not win over the majority of his republican led committee and the bill was later voted out of that committee and into the full state's house. that is where it sits tonight on the agenda for a full vote but even if it does not pass, or if the path votes not happen in time, the bill will effectively die. but even then, it is just one of an estimated 1600 bills, 1600 bills in state house across this country that have attempted to dismantle the separation between church and state. joining me now is representative talarico, remember the texas state house and a former public school teacher. representative talarico thank you very much for stepping away from house business for our behalf. just, if he could for people who have not been following this issue in your state, what are republicans trying to do what to public education in the state of texas? >> well first, thank you for having me alex and than
