>> well, hi, jamie. a huge international search operation has been going on all day now, trying to find the malaysian airlines jet. they haven't found anything, of course. there's more questions than answers, of course, as to what exactly what happened to it. radar signals show the plane may have tried to turn back to the country for some reason before it vanished. the crew, though, didn't notify ground control about any change of course. the international search is now looking in a broader area for the plane in the gulf of thailand. taking into account the aircraft may have turned back. the vietnamese military said yesterday their aircraft had seen two oil slix in the south china sea and could have been from the fuel tanks. the malaysian airlines 777 went missing in the early mornings hours of saturday on a fly to beijing in china. two hours into the flight, the plane should have been flying close to the veietnamese coast. vietnam said the plane didn't enter vietnamese air space. there were 14 different

i'm jamie colby in for harris faulkner tonight. the state department releasing a statement a short time ago saying the secretary will reaffirm the united states's strong support for ukrainian sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and the right of ukrainians to determine their own future. the world remains on edge, though, this hour as russia defies repeated calls from president obama, the united nations, nato, and all the other world powers that are asking for ukraine's sovereignty to be respected. but president vladimir putin vows to defend what he's calling russian interests inside ukraine and yesterday he got formal approval from his own government for military action. so tonight, there's an intense standoff unfolding as ukrainian troops are trapped. there are pro-russian forces surrounding bases in three ukrainian cities, all in the contested crimea region. armed, unidentified troops that are likely to be russian soldiers are standing just feet away from ukrainian troops, demanding they surrender. and ukraine's prime

jamie? >>> great inside. the search for flight 370 is keying in on the south indians ocean, an area known as the roaring 40s, known both to the location's latitude and rolling winds and waters. could the weather make it even worse? i heard jenthough i notice umenyiora explain that a cyclone isn't a hurricane, but there is storm activity in the area. >> absolutely. they're getting into the fall and winter season. you mentioned the roaring 40s, those are strong westerlies present in the region, you have the furious 50s and screaming 60s south of that, but the lines here those are lines of equal pressure. when you see them tightly packed like that, those are very strong winds. this is the area where we think we have possibly debris, south of that, that's where we've got very stormy activity, but in the greens, that's where the rain is. so we have a period of calm weather for the next several hours, then another storm moves in. remember, we're about 12 hours ahead, so moving ahead we see the strong winds as well

jamie? >> for all those families waiting for news about those loved ones, that weather could definitely slow down the process and the search for the missing jetliner. they're seeing wave swells and cloud cover and when all would hamper the search for the object that's now been spotted by satellite in the southern indian ocean. we're keeping on eye on the conditions. rick, a lot of people can't figure out, once they see the image, why does it take so long for them to get to it and tell exactly what it is? >> a few things, one of which is that you've got a flight that's about 1700 miles from perth, australia to get to that spot. they also don't get the image immediately. these satellite images are taken, it takes them some time to analyze it and to see it. by the way, satellites aren't always recording all spots. satellites are orbiting around the earth so you have to wait for it to pass around the earth and you have to get enough of these satellites focused on that spot which is what we could
