better let jan come in and warm up. it is a live michael and son weather cam and it is calm with winds. right now, we have a few high clouds. so temperatures are going to fall quickly with snow cover, too. 18 right now downtown. dew point is below zero. so, relative humidity is only 38%. winds are west, northwest now at 8. they will shift and become southwest. ahead of the next clipper. so, 18 was the high in gaithersburg. 15 in baltimore and 15 also in dulles. all those are good enough for new record low highs. all right, here's the radar. here's the next clipper. this is not as well organized. does not have the upper level energy this last clipper had or a southerly trek. it will take a trek to the north. it will take a cold front. so the snow you see in the midwest, we could see a snow shower tomorrow, that's about it. 10 in white oak. 14 arlington. 13 in springfield, 12 in reston. and we're looking at 15 down in waldorf. there's not much of a breeze, but enough to knock windchills to 9 and gaithersburg 3. windchill

jan schlichtmann is joining us right now. what do you make of this current situation, jan? >> well, i think it's the community in kanawha valley are learning the lessons that the wo burn families did. we have to know where our water is coming from and we can't leave it to the authorities. we have to work in partnership with them to protect the threats to our water supply. here's a water supply that was just one mile down river from a chemical storage plant that obviously has a long history here of some neglect that could have caused this thing. so it's a wake-up call to them and to all of us how prejudiced our water supply is and we must know our source and we must work with government officials to make sure it's protected. >> i hear you saying there's got to be more regulation of these plants, these sensitive areas so that water plants are not disrupted and poisoned, if you will. >> yes, the public has to understand that every time we talk about cutting government, these are the kinds of programs are the first ones that get cut. they're not on the radar screen of the budge

jan crawford is our chief legal correspondent. jan? >> reporter: scott, utah officials have been urging the supreme court to put that judge's ruling on hold while they were fighting this thing out on appeals saying he had single-handedly changed the state's marriage laws and it was unclear whether his ruling will even stand. utah voters had approved a ban on same-sex marriage back in 2004 with 66% supporting an amendment to the state's constitution. and now both sides in this case are pointing to last year's supreme court decision. that, of course, was when the justices struck down a federal law that had denied same-sex couples benefits. the court said marriage was a state issue. but the justices have not ruled on whether states like utah and others can continue to ban same- sex marriages and, scott, many people think this is a question whether in this case or the next one that the supreme court is eventually going to have to confront. >> pelley: jan crawford in our washington newsroom. jan, thank you very much. this evening, the senat

i'm jan jeffcoat. derek mcginty has the night off. >>> tragedy tonight involving teens behind the wheel and kids walking home from school. one student is dead, another in critical condition tonight. the students had just left for mcgruder high school in rockville. bruce leshan takes us to the scene of a stretch of road with a bad reputation. >> reporter: this is another horrible crash on a road that has seen more than its fair share of crashes. it happened just a mile or so from magruder high school and just as school was letting out police say everybody involved was school age. there were two cars heading up muncaster mill road at a high rate of speed. we don't know if they were racing, but they collided here where the road narrows and both cars ran off the road. there were three pedestrians on the sidewalk also school age and two of those pedestrians were hit, one of them killed. >> we do believe speed was a factor in this collision. the roy,adwa the character of the roadway, is such that it narrows
