right, let's cross now to washington to dw correspondents, janelle do my loud. he's been following the vice presidential debate closely for us to downgrade, to see again. so tell me what stood out for you the most as well as you said, pablo. this was a very wide ranging very policy focused debates with the middle east policy for an east policy, very heavy at the beginning before eventually venturing into other topics like abortion, like immigration climate change, gun violence, and you name it. so this was less about the contrast of personalities between the attack dog, ferocity of j. the vans and the folksy affability of tim was more than one might have expected. but there are a few stand out moments. and one that i noted, especially was one where january 6 came up at 10 walls, directly addressing daddy vance, asking whether he thought a trump lost the 2020 election. we know that he did. j. d vance dodging this question, tim was calling him out on what he said was a very dynamic non answer. now of course he also reminded people why j. d vance was on that stage

i'm janelle wang. the investigation into a widespread deadly e coli outbreak has found its way to a northern california mega farm. taylor farms, founded in salinas, is the focus of the fda tonight. u.s. foods is recalling for raw onion products because of a potential contamination from the farms. colorado facility. mcdonald's has stopped using the slivered onions from the farm. burger king is also directing its restaurants to dispose of whole onions distributed by the facility. the outbreak has been linked to one death and at least 49 illnesses. ten of them resulting in hospitalizations. no reports, though in california, the possible connection to taylor farms caught many people by surprise, including the agricultural commissioner in monterey county. he says there are strict rules in place to prevent these sorts of things from happening anywhere in the nation. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live at taylor farms plant in salinas. with that part of the story and the latest on the investigation, damien

i'm janelle wang. and i'm jessica aguirre. some eye opening testimony in day three of the high profile trial for zenni. he's the man accused of killing cashapp co-founder bob lee on the streets of san francisco last year. a close friend of bob lee's testified in court about seeing him the day before he was killed. nbc bay area's christie smith was inside the courtroom this afternoon. a long time friend of bob lee's took the stand and testified about meeting lee on april 3rd to catch up and get some input on new work he was doing. he told jurors he met the tech executive at an apartment of another person and says the suspect's sister, césar momani, was also there. the friend says lee was on a conference call and says there were whippets present and what appeared to be white powder, but he didn't see anyone using the powder. he also talked about hearing a call later in the day between lee and a man he believes was mo money. in that call, the friend claims he was raising concerns involving lee and his sister. that testimony could

i'm janelle wang. and i'm jessica aguirre. aguirre. everyone did everything right.hat is the assessment from oakland fire and cal fire. three days after the kohler fire burned a couple of homes in the oakland hills. nbc bay area's velena jones spoke with neighbors who are now back in their homes about the key role they all played in keeping those flames away. i just grab a hold and start just watering the whole area like the roof, the back. robert jr. was home friday when the flames came creeping up to his backyard. instead of leaving, he hoped fight the kohler fire. it's all right. the fire ultimately burned in avocado tree and part of his fence. how much water i poured onto this, it just kept coming back. this is our only safe spot. so all this caught on fire. i'm like, that's it. i got to go. just take a look at how close these flames came to these oakland homes. firefighters say that defensible space that you see right here played a major role in the fact that the fire didn't spread to more homes. we don't have any like those dry bushes

raj and janelle. good evening.ay the state ordered the revocation of anchored tiny homes contracting license. the contractor state license board says it served the company with a formal accusation last month, including allegations of taking too much money up front and abandoning projects. the state demanded a response, but the company did not respond. so today, the board ordered anchored tiny homes license be revoked. this is accountability. this is, you know, one of the many steps that we can take. but this is the biggest one that cslb can take. anchored tiny homes now has 30 days to appeal. its license is currently showing suspended. frustrated customers have been calling for the state of california to take action. that's not all they want. federal action to. and we were on hand at the federal building in san francisco as customer katie lucas visited the fbi unannounced. she brought the kids and a file full of documents to share with the feds. i want them to investigate the entire family. i'm one of over 700 peop

thanks so much for joining us i'm janelle wang. we're going to get to our top story about police drones in just a moment. but first we want to tell you about a crackdown on crime in california. it's paying off. that's the word today from state leaders. governor newsom highlighted the progress in a virtual press conference this afternoon. specifically, he talked about a 2023 statewide grant for retail theft. it distributed nearly $300 million across several cities, including san jose and san francisco. the governor says the money and resources help oakland to make over 1000 arrests and 500 for san francisco. this is about, as the commissioner said, getting guns off the street. this is about getting illegal cars back in the possession of the rightful owners. this is about sideshows which they've been cracking down on, including in oakland. we made some announcements last week on some of the progress there, and it's about sending a message that we're just not going to tolerate some of the behavior that we started to see. the governor

i'm janelle wang. some bay area campaign workers say they were assaulted while trying to do their civic duty. among the injured, a young man who was pistol whipped, sending him to the emergency room. it happened early wednesday evening in north oakland, and as nbc bay area's thom jensen reports, the candidate and her campaign workers say they will not be intimidated. the campaign workers for oakland city council member carol fife were canvasing the many apartment buildings in the 200 block of fairmont street at about 7 p.m. wednesday when it happened. a window for them to not engage in this kind of activity at this building. no big deal at first for these canvassers who, like many other campaign workers, walked door to door hanging literature and talking to voters about their candidate. but things escalated very quickly, according to city council member carol fife. he came downstairs, chased them outside and was yelling at them and proceeded to hit one in the head with a handgun. that young man was tak

i'm janelle wang. as you just saw in a special report from nightly news on hurricane milton, it's making landfall on florida's gulf coast. take a live look from saint petersburg. you can't really see much except heavy downpours right now. saint petersburg, just outside tampa bay, where the eyewall is moving across. now, if you look very closely, the storm surge is starting to breach over the seawall. the hurricane downgraded to a category three as it makes its way on shore. but the storm surge is what could be deadly. warnings cover almost all of florida's western coast, and some cities could see up to a 15 foot storm surge. 400,000 people told to evacuate, but with the storm here, many are now just hunkering down. people already reporting a shortage of gas. there are closed airports and 350,000 people without power. president biden warned this could be one of the worst storms in florida in 100 years. nbc's brie jackson is tracking it all from washington, d.c. florida braces for the direct impact of hu

i'm janelle wang. and i'm jessica aguirre. a safety boost for bart. the transit agency says new numbers show that overall crime is decreasing and that news comes just as ridership is on the upswing. nbc bay area's velena jones is at the orinda bart station to ask commuters, do they see a difference? reporter bart commuters like lucy deja say they're feeling safer using the system, and that's good news for an agency that's been focusing on safety improvements and increasing resources. it's relatively safe sometimes. when i had like a late night class, it could get a little sketchy. but in my experience, it's not that bad. bart says new numbers show overall crime is down systemwide by 15%, and violent crime has decreased from 263 to 236 incidents compared to the same time last year. property crime is also down double digits. commuters we spoke to say they think increased ridership is playing a role in the safer ride. i think when you just have more people in the system, it feels like some of the challenges aren't as as prevalent. bart confirms ridership

good tuesday everyone i'm janelle wang. fears of an all out war in the middle east after iran launched a barrage of missiles at israel this morning. it was the second attack in five months. retaliation for israel killing the leader of hezbollah. the militant group backed by iran. nbc news cameras captured the missiles over israel's skyline. iran launched dozens of missiles, but israel's iron dome defense system shot down a lot of them. no one was killed by that strike, and it didn't cause massive damage to israel. president biden and vice president harris met with their national security team to monitor the attack. president ordered the u.s. military to help shoot down those missiles. and today, the president says that defense was a success based on what we now know, the attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective. and this is testament to israeli military capability and u.s. military. iran and israel have been locked in a proxy war for decades, but this year is the first time iran has directly attacked israel. now

janelle thank you scott. spacex is claiming political bias played a role in a decision to limit rocket launches on the central coast. that is according to a new lawsuit. the company filed a lawsuit today against the california coastal commission. you'll remember just last week, the commission voted to cap the number of rocket launches on the central coast. panel members said it came down to environmental impacts and launch permits, but spacex says members stopped these launches due to political bias against owner elon musk. it's asking to stop the commission from regulating these launches. neither spacex or the commission have commented on the lawsuit yet. general motors has entered into a major deal to mine lithium for ev batteries. gm has agreed to a joint venture with canadian mining company lithium american corporation. it states gm will pay about $625 million to develop a lithium mining project in humboldt county, nevada. lithium is a key material in ev batteries, and gm has been working to grow its elec
