of course, we should let you know we're monitoring very carefully janet napolitano, homeland security security and craig fugate the head of fema is letting us know what the federal government is doing to help those affected as a result of hurricane irene. we're watching so many things right now for you. we go from there now to jeff frenery who is our msnbc meteorologist. what's the status of irene? still a cat 1 despite the winds and tremendous water surges. >> that's really the thing. even though the winds as we've been saying all morning long at 85 miles per hour, we're talking about a long duration wind event for a good section of the coastline. the latest update, 85-mile-per-hour winds gusting higher over 100 miles per hour at this point. we've seen the central pressure staying steady. 952 millibars. that is a sign this storm is not wavering own though it made landfall at north carolina at cape lookout. what we see happening is this storm system just continuing to refuel here from these warm atlantic waters up the coastline, and that will enable this to keep its current strength.

i'm joined today by my secretary of homeland security, janet napolitano and administrator of m fema, craig fugate to provide a brief update on our ongoing response efforts to hurricane irene. first, let me say that this is a storm that has claimed lives. our thoughts and prayers are with those who've lost loved ones. and those whose lives have been affected by the storm. you need to know that america will be with you in your hour of need. while the storm has weakened as it moves north, it remains a dangerous storm that continues to produce heavy rains. one of our chief concerns before irene made landfall was the possibility of significant flooding and widespread power outages. and we've been getting reports of just that from our state and local partners. many americans are still at serious risk of power outages and flooding, which could get worse in the coming days as rivers swell past their banks. so i want people to understand that this is not over. response and recovery efforts will be an ongoing operation. and i urge americans in affected areas to continue to listen for the guida

for more on the impact of hurricane irene and relief efforts, we turn to janet napolitano, the secretaryhomeland security. i spoke with her from fema headquarters this afternoon. secretary napolitano, thank you for joining us. what would you say is your most critical concern right now the aftermath of hurricane irene. >> well irene has now converted from a coastal hurricane into a significant amount of inland flooding particularly in places like new england, upstate new york, new jersey, and so dealing with flooding, a lot of small towns have really been hurt by the flooding. and then we're already working with states like north carolina and virginia that were hit by irene over the weekend on their damage assessments and things like getting power restored, working with the power companies to get their power back up. >> ifill: can you tell us how many states have been declared federal disasters at this point. >> i would have to say at least eight, possibly nine. i haven't done the recent count. but what will happen now is we will go back and do damages assessments, looking at the extent o

some of the evacuations you were talking about earlier, and as you mentioned janet napolitano, along with fema administrator craig fight here on the ground, both in new york and new jersey today, earlier meeting with new york's governor cuomo and surveying the damage up in prathsville, one of the harder hit areas in new york. this afternoon they will probably get a good look at this all along the passaic river, tamron, and the mayor of paterson, i spoke with him today, and there's still so much cleanup to do once this water leaves. >> our problem will be that three, four, five days out we're still going to have a series of problems. we've got to do the kinds of cleanup that many towns won't have to. we'll have debris all over the place, sewers we have to check, infrastructure. cracks in our roadways. we don't know what kind of damage that's going to bring. >> reporter: and he hopes that he'll have a chance to express that sentiment of the needs here in paterson alone to napolitano and fugate when he sees them this afternoon. tamron? >> thank you. right now relief workers in vermont a

one month ago sitting right there secretary janet napolitano said the threat level to date is as high as it has been since september 11th because of increased radicalization in our country. i would ask the audience and the committee -- in the last two years alone these terror plot were blocked by our government. every part of the united states -- affects the entire nation. those in the northeast have more threats but no one is immune from these types of threats. this committee cannot live in denial which some of us do when they suggest this hearing dilute its focus by investigating threats unrelated to al qaeda. the department of homeland security and this committee were formed in response to the al qaeda attack of september 11th. there is no equivalency of rest between al qaeda and neo-nazi, environmental extremists or other isolated madmen. only al qaeda and its islamists affiliate's are part of an international threat to our nation. by the justice department's own record not one tear related case in the last two years involved neo-nazis, environmental extremists or anti-war groups.

janet napolitano. good enough to join me live from the nation's capitol. madam secretary, thank you so much for coming on and sparing the time. let me ask you straight up. does the federal government have the money to respond to this storm? >> yes. let me be very clear about this. survivors of hurricane irene, survivors from the tornado, survivors from the flooding that occurred in the spring, they are all going to receive their individual assistance. public assistance for projects already under way will continue. the only thing that has happened and this has happened historically at the end of the fiscal year is if you've had a heavier than predicted disaster year, that we take money and make sure that survivors get paid first and no new projects for older disasters are approved until congress replenishes the funds necessary for disasters. >> i know. i think of joplin for example. who can forget the images there. they started school recently and are still picking up the pieces. can you be more specific, secretary napolitano in terms of how you prioritize
