janice? >> janice: absolutely. one of the biggest storms that florida has had to deal with certainly this year. and we are taking a look at a strengthening storm system. we have a lot of warm water ahead of it. it's going it move over the western tip of cuba and then into 89-degree temperatures in the water. so, there really is not a whole lot in its way. so it's 88 degrees in and around the area where ian is. we are expecting rapid intensification meaning we are going to see a cat 2, cat 3 next 24 hours very quickly. we have all of the ingredients for a strengthening storm and not a lot of upper level winds to tear te'o part. once it gets close to the coast. that's when we could see some weakening. but it's still going to have a tremendous storm surge and that the most impactful predicament that these areas, these vulnerable areas have. tampa, you could get storm surge of upwards of 9 feet. are you prepared for that. we need to get your preparations completed today because this storm is going to be on the doorstep

janice dean is live from the weather center. janice. >> we've covered a lot of storms together and this one is going to be for the record books. this is going to devastate southwest florida. you were talking about categories 4 and 5 and we're on the cusp of a five. it doesn't matter any more. the damage will be the storm surge and some of these vulnerable coastlines upwards of 18 feet and it will come during high tide. it will add an additional 1 to 2 feet and the waves on top of that. prayers are needed in southwest florida because we are -- landfall is imminent in the next couple hours and the high wall is now making landfall across portions of southwest florida. we'll feel the hurricane-force winds getting gusts in venice of over 60 miles per hour. it will be a long duration event. you mentioned the slowing down. that will be dangerous because you will have all of this water. this is like a bulldozer of water now from a very strong hurricane that is three times the size of charley. when we look at the history of hurricanes th

senior meteorologist janice dean is standing by. fox team weather starts with robert ray in fort myers right where the hurricane hit. robert? >> good morning guys. look at the devastation on the streets of fort myers. this was completely under water yesterday evening as the surge came in you could see some of that video will remnants of what was published in and around downtown here. there is just debris everywhere. the window field here yesterday was just tremendous we could barely stand by. this vehicle coming through. it's an active scene here this morning as believe it or not, there is some power that has come back at least in this part of fort myers, shockingly enough, the water system is totally out, of course at this point. but my gosh, fort myers just took it on the chin yesterday yesterday evening at 6:00 p.m. as the water was rushing through the streets literally creating white caps and the window pushing in so hard that the water from the river just a block away was coming in. we could make our exit. as we left to try to

senior meteorologist janice dean is tracking the damage.t are the images we will be getting once the sunrises and we see the extent of all that unfolded yesterday. >> janice: we have drones that can get into areas where emergency crews cannot. some people that have not evacuated, it might take days for emergency response, that is why if there is a storm coming, make sure you have preparation for seven days without air conditioning, electricity. it will be warm. you have standing water, do you have food and water? this is a dire, awful situation, this has been the worst hurricane to hit the state of flo florida -- well, we had matthew across the opinionhandle, category five, much smaller storm, this is like three times the size of matthew and that is why it is so devastating and impacting so many low-lying areas and we're still not done. this is minimal hurricane, 75 miles per hour, it is still going to bring incredibly rough condition. we saw the video of daytona, the winds are blowing, hurricane-force winding and that will impact orlando,

take a bigger picture, janice. >> janice: we think the center of the storm is going to come on shore at around 5:00 p.m. on wednesday. so running out of time for preparations all up and down the west coast. the center of the storm is overland right now. it might knock some of the wind out of the storm. but then we have got a lot of warm fuel ahead of it. so we are anticipating a category 4 storm. as it makes its approach to the western coast of florida. flash flooding is going to be a big concern. but as ashley mentioned, this is going to be a storm surge story. so even if the storm starts to weaken a bit. it's going to bull doze a major hurricane's worth of storm surge into a vulnerable coast line. tampa bay is one of the most vulnerable spots for storm surge in the -- acotc planet. so, that's why we are really concerned. 5 to 10 feet of storm surge goes into that bay and it has nowhere else to go except inland over top of some of the low lying residences and businesses and that is why we are so concerned. they haven't had a storm of this magnitude hit that area in 100 years. 1921.

>> janice: absolutely, storms in the past, i think charlie brought dozens of tornados. again, weaker tornados, but talking about potential for heavy rainfall and winds, so tornado on top of that is not good news. we can see weaker tornados, dozens in some cases, we will watch that today and throughout the duration of the storm. you have counter clock wise motion and rotation, that is why we see the spin-offs of tropical tornados. >> carley: there are pictures on social media that show like 15 or a guilty over dozen i weras destroyed at north perry airplane because of suspected tornados, so the damage is being felt in florida. >> janice: widespread throughout the state of florida. >> carley: let's go to phil phil keating, what are you seeing right now? >> it is finally raining steadily here, not quite yet the deluge issue but as janice was pointing out, last three hours have seen massive intenseification, it went from cat three 120 mile per hour winds to category four, that can be catastrophic. take a look at live radar, the center of the storm, 75 miles southwest of nap

good morning, janice. >> janice: good morning, joey.the mid-atlantic. you can see the rainfall along the gulf coast. you can see moving in towards the atlanta, georgia area up towards the mid-atlantic and the northeast where we are going to heavy rain today in and around the new york city area up towards boston. so the eastern third of the country, that's where we are really focused. you can see where we have the flood watches from northern georgia all the way up towards portland, maine. 3 to 5 inches in just a couple of days. even though we need the rain. too much of a good thick is going to cause some flooding. just know what to could if there is a watch or a warning in your area. the other big story is the heat. it hangs on to much of the country especially california, the great basin where we have heat alerts, excessive heat warnings. well over 100 degrees for some of these regions and going to set some daytime records. in the tropics, it's really incredible that we are into peak season and some none of these storms impact the u.s.

first, we have live fox team coverage janice dean tracking the storm's latest path. fox news weather we start with robert ray in fort myers. robert? >> good morning. you know, as light is about to come up here and these rain bands and window really intensify, conditions are deteriorating here in fort myers beach. the gulf of mexico, just a football field over there. churning up. i was just over there. when it gets light, we will show you that. you can see right now, these heavy bands as hurricane ian is right out there. the eye center is about 70 miles from where i'm standing it's 30 miles wide and the window fell well over 300 miles. as this is coming in. it's very cross to the potential upgrade to a category 5. and where i'm standing right now, the bridge that takes us over into mainland fort myers, we are here strategically because when conditions begin to get too intense, and this storm surge begins to come, in which could be up to a foot, we will leave as will emergency officials we are told. as a matter of fact, in cape coral, just to the north of us, emergency

senior meteorologist janice dean joins us live with more, this is concerning. >> janice: this is concerningcane and i think the whole state of florida needs to be paying attention, the east coast needs to watch this and the panhandle, hurricane, hurricane warning for the western part of cuba and then we have hurricane watch for the tampa area. we are starting to rein foo the forecast and get details where we think this will make landfall. look at wednesday and thursday, that cone of uncertainty gets wider. we need to watch big bend of florida, panhandle and southeast getting into friday and saturday. this storm will be big, it will impact all of the coastline, not just a section of it, here is official forecast and computer models, you will notice computer models are going toward the west a bit. pay attention to that because this storm could crawl up the coast and hit the panhandle, that is why i want the whole state of florida to watch this over the income couple days. we have a few days to prep for this, all indications this will be a major hurricane in the next 24 to 48 hours because the

janice dean has the very latest. where is it headed?> headed towards the coast of florida, about 90 miles off the coast of fort myers. and the 5:00 a.m. advisory team in and you see words like catastrophic from the national hurricane center. you know this is going to be historic storm and some of these vulnerable coast lines will be, you know, changed forever. this is a big deal. we are also looking at the potential for the storm to slow down. so, it's going to take 24 to 36 hours for the storm to actually cross over to the state. you mentioned orlando. orlando is under a hurricane warning. so they are going to feel hurricane conditions for duration of hours. the threat for tornadoes certainly, the storm surge will kill people along the coast here if you have not evacuated because we could see storm surge 10 to 12 feet in vulnerable areas. if you house can't withstand that you need to move to higher grounds immediately. we are talking about a landfall this afternoon category 4 storm. it underwent something we call an eye wall replacemen

janice dean has the fox weather forecast. >> janice: extreme weather today. we are getting into the rush hour and airplanes come out of the northeast. we are dealing with happy rain today and tomorrow on and off and flash flooding will be a rick. you saw imaging out of rhode island, seven inches in and around providence area. we don't lighten up until thursday, there is rain still to come, two to three inches on top of six, seven inches they received in parts of new england. rhode island rainfall totals, greenville seven inches of rain, close to six inches in cranston, we will see flooding in the northeast today. the heat is not good news for the wildfires burning, 127 active fires, over million acres burned across the west and look at the fires across the northwest. in the northwest, we have fire weather alerts and dry conditions and warm temperatures. temperatures in 100 degree range from california to nevada up toward northwest. this is a big story and the south, we have seen record rainfall across the south, still looking at lingering rain, shower activit

janice dean joins us with more. >> janice: unbelievable wildfire season that started early and continuesok at the map, active fires, 151, 1.8 million acres burned, the worst now across midwest, where we have high temperatures and not a lot of moisture. the smoke is traveling toward the east, parts of northern plains and midwest will get potential of smoke and air quality alerts toward the plain states. it is unhealthy toward mizula, toward nevada, affecting the west. we are getting relief in terms of moisture, that area of low pressure across the pacific k is still bringing moisture from the pacific to some areas. we could see potential for flash flooding, this is considered a desert dessert area. potential for thunderstorms toward the northwest. lingering showers and thunderstorms for florida, clearing out of the northeast and nice air, refreshing air issue not as humid has it has been. forecast for florida, three to five inches over the next five days, not very sunny, highs today, heat is confined to the central u.s., cooler air for the west and cooler relatively low humidity for the n

janice dean in the fox extreme weather center. brandi campbell in orlando. robert ray in fort myers. let's begin in tampa where the eye of the storm is off the coast. >> the big event will soon be impacting the tampa bay area in just a matter of hours. the story of the day now hurricane ian now a cat four rapidly intensifying. the power and strength and devastation potential. it was 120 mile-per-hour winds at 2:00 in the morning. 5:00 a.m. up to 140. they're now at 155 miles per hour. that's on the cusp of a category 5. that's, of course, the worst of the worst. it does appear most people in the region have sheltered in place. this is a busy street in downtown tampa on a wednesday morning. we have hardly seen any traffic all day. it will make emergency measures easier. the storm is 55 miles west of naples. from there it will make landfall somewhere on florida's west coast later today. with charlotte county looking like the spot at this moment, punta gorda, port charlotte where hurricane charley hit causing massive destruction in 2004. an hour ago florida's g
