janine de la vega is in oakland with what is going on right now.anine. >> reporter: pam, we are here at an ac transit office. where atu union members are slowly trickling in. this is one of the voting places here. now i just spoke with one worker who says he is not sure which way he is going to vote. he wants to review the agreement again. these workers are part of the transit union local 192 which represents more than 1600ac transit bus drivers and mechanics. they have been fighting for better wages, health care benefits, scheduling and break time. they have already rejected two other tentative agreements. if they vote down this new agreement, it is possible they could decide the strike. the agreement offers a 9.5% raise over three years and increases medical benefit payments. some rank and file say the medical cost will wipe out most of their raise. >> i've been here 14 years. the last time we got a raise was in 2007. you know two people working for ac transit can never afford to pay their bills. on 2007 wages. something has to give. >> ktvu spok

janine de la vega is there. she has been there all morning. hecked the board and so far there has just been one delay on delta airlines. there is one canceled flight on virgin but its unclear if it was due to the water main break that occurred here. it was chaotic earlier. its more controlled now. there are officers in here making sure passengers don't step in the water. here's what it looked like inside the airport. at 2:15 this morning a hot water line broke which takes travelers from the security screening to the parking garage and baggage claim area. couple thousands of gallons of water came cascading down the escalators and into the security area. there were not too many people there at the time because the first flights don't take off until 6:30 in the morning. emergency crews work to secure the area and get the water turned off. passengers can still check in at terminal a but if they have bags to check, they must check them at terminal b and go through security screening over there. >> we have to check our bags and walk back over to a. >

. >>> police believe they were robbing people all over the city and janine de la vega is joining us to tell us about how the suspects were caught. >>> good morning, david, we are here near some apartment complexes. >> reporter: this is where the suspects were to get and rehelped but we know police say from about 4:00 yesterday afternoon to 10:00 p.m. there were reports of robberies and in some of them they reported suspects were armed, some occurred in the alley and it appears they were targeting random people throughout the city. the suspect description as well and police officers then spotted the suspect's car. >> they were just victimizing people who walked down the street. they had a heads up just trying saturate the area. >> police say after they pulled over the car the suspects confessed. they arrested two males and two females and they are interviewed at the police department and detectives are investigating whether this group is responsible but if any of the victims were injured, we do know nobody was sent to the hospital and as soon as we get more information we will bring it

ktvu channel 2 reporter, janine de la vega tells us southbound el camino real is now shut down. janine? >> reporter: yes, the southbound lanes of el camino real between 17th and 20th is closed. so that san mateo police can investigate this accident. another closure i want to tell you about is the southbound offramp to el camino from highway 92 is also closed. more police are arriving and the coroner has come on the scene. the accident happened at 6:20 this morning. we have limited information. what we do know is that a car did hit a pedestrian that was near that offramp. again, corey nir has arrived -- coroner has arrived. we're not sure if the deceased is a man or a woman. we're waiting for a police spokesman to arrive on the -- on the scene. i can't see the car that hit the pesh. not sure if the driver stayed on scene. they are investigating. we're trying to talk to investigators to find out what happened. this certainly is affecting traffic. this will be here, you know, for some time so that police can gather some evidence of what they can here. reporting live from san mateo,

ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live from san jose.lling us more about the need out there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning dave. well everyone has a story here. now some are mentally ill, some are veterans, some were living in their cars and -- or under an overpass and it was getting too cold. the shelter here is now closed but many have stayed to get a hot breakfast now. ehc life builders opened its cold weather shelters in san jose, sunnyvale and gilroy which provides 275 emergency beds for those living on the street. now out of that number there's just 50 beds for those in san jose. it's not enough for the growing homeless pop lakes. the 2013 homeless census survey showed there are more than 7600 people homeless on any given night which is an 8% increase in santa clara county from 2011 and there was an 18% increase in the city of san jose. we spoke to one woman who slept at the shelter who says she was evicted from her apartment and hasn't been able to find a place since september. >> i'm kind of struggling, you know. i'm al

janine de la vega arrived on the scene just a few minutes ago. she joins us live. janine, what have you learned? >> reporter: police are not tell -- are now telling us this intersection will be closed for an hour or two while they investigate. you can see that a police car has been involved in a crash, the northbound lanes of alma done are closed. the eastbound lanes of san carlos are closed for about a block area. what we're learning here is that at about 5:45, the police car was stopped and almaden at san carlos, when another car, a cadillac, was traveling at a high rate of speed and then crashed into the back of that police car. at some point, we're hearing that the driver of that car tried to get away and it was a security guard who was working nearby in this downtown area that was able to catch him, apprehend him and wait until other officers arrived. i asked a police sergeant why wasn't the actual driver of the police car that got hit able to do that and she said,ing you know, he must -- she said, you know, he must have been in knock. we're unsure how bad his

ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live from san jose to tell us about what is happening today. janine. >> reporter: we are inside sacred heart community service and it has been transformed into santa's workshop. you can see all the toys that were donated. parents can't afford to buy a gift for a child because they are worried about paying rent or utility bills. being able to get a toy for their child really helps out. later this morning they will shop here for their child. parents will be able to pick out two toys and a book or a puzzle for their child. and in all they will help 6,000 kids all the way from babies to 18 years old. now while this looks like a lot of toys, sacred heart says it still doesn't have enough. yesterday they put out a plea that they were 7,000 toys short. but the community came through and now they are just 3,000 short. sacred heart says they still really need gifts for teenagers and they also need books. so you can either come and drop off a donation today or you can donate money online. and as far as this giveaway, it starts at 8:00 a.m. and this is all

ktvu's janine de la vega is there to tell us what kind of toy donations are still needed. janine? >> reporter: sacred heart community service has converted this room into santa's workshop. you know, it may look like a lot of toys but they still need more. yesterday, they were 7,000 toys short. this morning, they still need 3,000. they have enough for the kids today but not for monday. later this morning. parents will have the opportunity to shop for free for their kids. many of these parents, they just can't afford to buy presents. they are scraping by trying to struggle to make ends meet, paying their rent and utilities. let's go to some video. this is a group of parents waiting outside right now at sacred heart. they have appointments at 8:00 a.m. they wanted to make sure they have the first pick of toys. when they let the parents in, they do it in groups. one couple we spoke to say they feel grateful that they are able to receive this from the charity. they hope that one day they did help out and give back when things are getter for them -- benter -- better for them. >> he had

janine de la vega is joining us live from the bart station to tell us how riders could be effected by the premium plan. >> reporter: good morning, brian. in about an hour the peak commute hours will begin. we will see a lot more foot traffic here. the bart board of directors talked about raising prices during that time at their recent meeting. the san francisco chronicle is reporting bart officials are preparing to look into peak period fares. charging higher prices during the busiest hours or most congested station. more analysis is needed so that is why the idea is being explored on how it will work. the board says now is not the time to raise prices since the transit agency went through two strikes and trains have been experiencing mechanical problems. >> i don't think its fair. they need to find ways to cut down on their cost and spending and stop passing everything on to the riders. >> reporter: bart fares are already scheduled to increase 5.2% in january. its based on inflation. the average bart fare is $3.59 it will raise to $3.78. now a survey showed that riders supported infl

janine de la vega is there now. it appears someone is in custody? >> reporter: yes, police are questioning him right now. we're here on granada avenue. police have the royal ambassador apartments roped off with crime tape. they are escorting residents into that complex and right now, they are interviewing people to see if they were witnesses to this shooting. now we know at 11:00 a.m., they received a report of gunshots at the apartment complex. when officers arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. we don't know where but they were able to track down a male suspect. now, we're still waiting to hear from police to find out what the motive in this shooting was. don't know if there was a relationship between the victim and the suspect but at this point, we are hearing that he is in custody. we know the woman was rushed to the hospital. right now, police weren't able to tell me the extent of her injuries or how serious they were. we're expecting a spokesman to arrive to see if they can shed any more light on the shooting. reporting live from sant

janine de la vega tells us what message his relatives have for the city. >> quiet moments were spent by the garcia family in the spot where their baby brother was hit and killed by their a car. a makeshift memorial is growing at the intersection of branham and vista park. the 17-year-old was a junior known for being down to earth and had a passion for art. >> this is so hard to take. my little boy, my baby brother. i can't believe it. >> reporter: he was riding his bike home tuesday night when a car crashed into him. the driver stopped and is cooperating with police. officers are concerned because the number of auto verses mendocino accidents this year had -- pedestrian accidents this year is at 25, the highest in eight years. this woman stopped at the memorial on her way to visit her daughter's grave. her daughter was killed in 2011 after being hit a few miles away while crossing branham. >> it's crazy. the city of san jose needs to get their act together and really, really fix this. people are speeding. >> lighting in the streets for sure on branham. another problem, the speed limi

ktvu's janine de la vega shows us the footage and talks to a witness who saw the struggle. >> reporter: you can hear this woman screaming for help at this bus stop on east calaveras boulevard. she's struggling to get away from a man. this was captured from an a.c. transit bus at 6:00 last night. a woman who works in the business park nearby heard the commotion. >> i heard a scream and i saw a man pushing a woman. >> it looked like he was grabbing her and she was struggling. i thought it was a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting everything. >> reporter: the bus driver also witnessed the incident. the it's difficult to determine whether the two new each other. >> they are struggling over a bag or some sort of backpack. the female asked for help. yells out to say call the police. and the male intervenes and directs her off, they go back in the business park. >> reporter: police are treating this as a possible kidnapping. they sent out a chp helicopter to search the business park and nearby creek last night. but they found nothing. this morning officers went back to the complex to look for m

reporting live from redwood city, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. more details on the plant where this fire is burning. as janine said, there have been four other fires at the sims metal management plant in the last six years. the most recent happened a month ago that fire on november 10th. it raged for nearly 17 hours. it prompted a shelter-in-place order in three counties due to the heavy smoke coming from the plant. the company has been slapped with several fines. in april of 2007, the plant was given a fine for large amounts of contaminants caused by a fire at the plant. then in 2012, the company was ordered by the epa to stop releasing toxic pollutants into the bay. during inspections, investigators found five times the amount of lead allowed by federal law and other dangerous chemicals in the runoff. >>> the wildfire burning in big sur has now grown to 550 acres and destroyed at least 15 homes. it's burning near pfeiffer state beach on the rugged monterey county coast. this is video from last night. right now, at least a hundred people are und

ktvu's janine de la vega is joining us live from san jose to tell us how to find out if you are at riskjanine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. well, this target behind me in the cambria neighborhood opens up in about a half-hour. we've been talking to people who shop here and they are dealing with the stress of holiday shopping. they don't want to have to think about identity theft or their account being drained. now, target officials say that up to 40 million accounts may have been compromised. if those have resolved the issue and is partnering with a third party forensic firm, customers who shopped from thanksgiving day all the way through december 15th are at risk. the information compromised includes customer names, credit or debit card numbers, the card's expiration date and the three-digit security code. >> i shop there all of the time. i just have to check on my bank. make sure everything is okay. >> i'm disappointed it's so easy for somebody to be able to do that with a company like target. >> reporter: the seat cret service is investigating how the unauthorized access occurred

ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega joins us live from san jose to tell us why police think these crimes are connected. janine? >> reporter: jana, officers finally caught up with these thieves in this neighborhood near blossom hill and snell. now, in all of these cases, police say that the suspect and the -- suspect car description seemed to have matched. now, police say that from about 4:00 yesterday afternoon to 10:30 p.m., there were reports of 7 to 8 robberies. in some of them, the victims reported the suspects were recall armed. the suspects happened from almaden valley, downtown. there was one on the east side. officers say it appears the group was targeting random people in residential and commercial areas. >> for the most part, they were shopping individuals, robbing the individuals of personal items and/or money. that's what they were doing with force or threat of force. >> reporter: the officers were flagged down and they were able to locate the suspect's car. they arrested two males and two females. out of that group, two of them are juveniles. they are being interviewe

ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is joining us now from redwood city to talk about the controversy. janine. >> reporter: pam, so far the building does not have a planned parenthood sign on it. the building says its been leased but there have been reports out its supposed to open up today an antiabortion activists are trying to fight it. the clinic is located on elle camino royal. which is on the border of redwood city and atherton. it will be open 20 hours a week and provide health care. there were efforts a couple years ago to open up a planned parenthood but there were protests against it. this location in north fair oaks has set off public outcry again against some residents that have circulated a petition to get the clinic moved. planned parenthood would decrease property values. the bay area news group is reporting that the petition since planned parenthood is leasing it from him. it appears the clinic is here to stay since the parcel of land is zoned for commercial use. reporting live near redwood city janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. >>> new this morning a couple of ea

ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is at the crowne plaza in burlingame which opened its doors to viewers earlier this morning. >> reporter: yes, tori. a couple of hours ago, i'm standing outside a conference room where the live stream of the hearing in washington, d.c. is going on. you can see, there's about 30 people inside the room watching what's happening on screen intently. we're told that families of the passengers who were on board the ash plane that crashed are expected -- asiana plane that crashed are expected to arrive but they are not here yet. this remote viewing area was set up by asiana airlines and the ntsb because it's required by federal law to provide access to the hearing to families who couldn't actually travel to d.c. to attend. there are support staff here from the ntsb. there's also people from the red cross, asiana airlines and also from other airlines. now, the ntsb told us that those other airlines are leer to learn about what happened the day of the crash. there hadn't been a fatal plane crash since the asiana one since 2009 on u.s. soil. so with the
