>> jared, let me start with you, the president released his new tax returns today. obama paid just over 20% in an income of $790,000. the president's plan would make wealthy people like him pay more, isn't that just sumply fairness? >> i think it is and a lot of people are thinking about the buffet rule, of course, and even with an income of almost 800,000, you would not want to get over the buffet rule it's over a million. let's not forget that the president is proposing to increase tax rates on folks above $250,000. this is the sunsetting of the high end bush tax cut. it should have happened awhile ago. this is a tax cut that expires at the end of this year with a bunch of others. i think most important, reverend, is you know we have a couple of rich people arding for about stuff, $800,000 puts you up in the income scale. the median income is $50,000 and those folks are struggling and there's a lot of people below that that are struggling too. they're asking what are these guys going to do to help my situation and i think that's the key question here. >> i think m

joining me is jared bernstein. jared, good to have you here.pleasure, alex. >> walk us through this jobs report and tell us what the numbers tell you. >> as you suggested, we were expecting a better report. but a lot of times our expectations are like looking in the rearview mirror. the last few months on average have been delivering about 250,000 jobs per month. so folks thought that we'd be kind of in that ballpark. the fact that we weren't doesn't mean that we are on to a new, slower, less favorable trend because one month does not a trend make. in fact, one of the things i like to do is average out these monthly data because there's statistical noise in each month. if you look at the quarterly numbers, march gives us the data for the first quarter, we are adding an underlying trend of in the neighborhood of 200,000 a month, which, by the way, isn't great. it's good but it's not fast enough to bring the unemployment rate down as quickly as a lot of folks would like to see. but we're still moving in the right direction. >> okay. jared, you wr
