neil: i spoke to white house officials including jared bernstein, they are getting giddy about the direction the economy is going. very few people talking about recession, inflation numbers that have come down in the last 12 months, still heidi pentagon what you look at. this improvement we are seeing in the jobs field, they think we have time to right the ship, to get us back to low inflation, potentially 20 million jobs. by the time of the election. that is what they are pounding. >> i hope they feel relief but that's not in the polls. consumer confidence is increasing in large part because of the rallies we are seeing in the stock market. looking at people's feeling about president biden's handling of the economy and inflation and these issues, they are not necessarily feeling better in large part because in many ways people are spending 14% more today than a few years ago. $0.86 on the dollar they are spending now. they feel that in every single way. even though consumer confidence is better, people are not talking about the recession as much, the middle class is feeling squeezed and tha

the politics of all of this, but when i talk to white house administration officials including jared bernsteinadvisers, he was saying the trend is their friend. the inflation numbers have been going down for 12 the straight months, job growth continues, and they think that by election day they're going to be in pretty good shape because the economy's going to be in very good shape. do you guys looking at the same data agree with that? >> yeah, it's been amazing, neil. we've been on this merry go round, you know, ride of versus no landing, soft landing, hard landing, and now we're back to no land arer -- landing somehow we're going to avoid a recession. and by the way, no landing's not, like, a thing -- [laughter] because with we would never have economic cycles if there the weren't a landing. we do expect recession unfolds here. we do think it's because of the lag impact of fed tightening. fed policy takes 12-18 months for changes in monetary policy to filter through to the economy. remember just 15 months ago interest rates were 0. neil: that's true. >> so so we still need to absorb all the c

>> now i am not going to speak to jared bernstein's views on this particular issue. >> your views are diametrically opposed, and he disagrees with you, and so i guess please make sure that you continue to push to maintain the dollar as a global reserve currency. i guess let's go back to debt. that to gpt-3 -- gdp ratio was at 100 percent. i'm having serious concerns about our spending, are unsustainable spending, and it will further erode our belief to maintain the dollar as a global reserve currency. we saw the grease at 180% debt to gdp winded austerity measures and had to get the eu to bail them out. mount secretary, nobody's going to bail us out. the american people are not able to. when you think about our unsustainable spending? is our debt to gdp ratio a concern of yours as it relates to maintain the dollar as a reserve currency? >> it is critical that we remain on a fiscally sustainable course. >> remain? did you say remain? >> we are not on a fiscally sustainable course. >> well the president presented a budget with three trillion dollars of deficit reduction over the next de

white house counsel of the economic adviser's chair jared bernstein suggested to msnbc jonathan cay partsue. a recent associated press poll found that just 30% of adults think the economy is, quote, good. meanwhile, while speaking at the conservative turning point action conference yesterday, republican congresswoman marjorie taylor greene of georgia warned that president biden wants to address issues like education, medical care and world poverty. take a look. >> lyndon b. johnson is very similar to joe biden. how are they say the same? they're both democrat socialist. lyndon b. johnson was the majority leader in the senate. does that sound familiar? he was vice president to kennedy. joe was vice president to obama. he was appointed as the president after jfk was assassinated, then he was elected. his big socialist programs were the great society. the great society where big government programs to address education, medical care, urban problems, rural poverty, transportation, medicare, medicaid, food stamps and welfare. the office of economic opportunity and big labor and labor unions.

in 2014, jared bernstein published an op-ed in a "new york times" titled dethrone king dollar where he advocated for the u.s. government to actively take steps to remove the dollar in the global reserve currency. he is now nominated him to be the head of the council of economic advisers. all while the chinese are undermining the global reserve currency and the successes are increasing both in number and ever increasing rate so you've been in the government for 25 years. while you have ample experience on wall street, do you agree that the u.s. government should take steps to actively remove the dollar as the global reserve currency? >> i'm not familiar with of the op-ed but i think we've benefited as a nation that the u.s. dollars had such a central role since a little over a hundred years now. >> so you don't think we should actively take steps to remove the dollar? >> i would go a little further i think a lot of our agenda is about ensuring that we go as many years, as many decades as possible, but we have the best capital markets and i think the best that undergirds the geopolitical
