texas state representative jasmine crockett said on our show, use the power you have to pass voting legislation to preserve and protect the right to vote across the country, please. and this points to something that is easy to overlook but i think is really important to focus on, which is the fundamental asymmetry and an sustainability of the current status quo. because state legislatures are by and large run by majority rule. and it's states that control, republicans can pass to restrict the vote. even in states like georgia where joe biden just won an election. where they elected to senate democrats. there is no filibuster in the senate, its majority rule. but then if you want to protect voting rights at the national role, then it takes 50 votes, 60 votes. and those votes are just not there because republicans won't play ball. not only that, but think of this craziness. the filibuster, as we say often on the show, it's not some nonnegotiable principles changing overtime. indeed, i covered it changing back in 2013. democrats got rid of it for most presidential nominations because republicans w

one of the congressmen who participated in the flight was a former legal partner of mine, jasmine crockettd miss crockett and i discussed the decision to leave and we said how important this was that the people of texas deserved a fight at least before they allowed the republican legislature to strip any texan of their right to vote or make it more difficult for black and brown populations in texas to participate if the process. it was a des pat move, but this is a des pperate time and i'm grateful to those 50 plus congressmen who went out there and advocated on behalf of texans. >> joe manchin is not willing to reform the filibuster to get a limited voting rights act through congress. are you disappointed by congressional democrats or the president's efforts so far? >> well i'm disappoint the in joe manchin not siding with his party on this most important issue. tomorrow we celebrate john lewis and all of his efforts to protect the vote rights. joe manchin has had nice to things about john lewis and so has the president but let's honor his legacy and do whatever is in our power to protect

let's start with jasmine crockett. i wanted, to if i can, get your thoughts on a few things.dent? how have your meetings on capitol hill gone so facts and circumstances and do you feel like the trip has been a success so far in terms of what you set out to accomplish? >> thanks for having me. good to see priscilla. she was there when i load the flight to get out of austin. our conversation with the vp was one of inspiration, so i want to be clear. we are very confident that we are on the right side of history in this particular matter and standing for voting rights. the vp was very encouraging. she said that this was as american as american pie what we were doing, defending democracy, and sadly enough we have seen over and over in this country that every single time a certain group of people, typically people of color, start to get involved and engaged, those in power get nervous and they want to try to restrict their accessibility to the ballot box so that's where we were with the vice president. as far as have we been successful? i really would not measure our success just

. >> representative jasmine crockett said that while she likes what has been proposed, she doesn't need. she needs an inch. are you confident that you will get an inch, that you will get something in the form of federal voting rights legislation? and if you don't, can you explain what will happen in texas? >> well, that's sort of two really interesting questions. first answer is, yes, i do think we will. whether or not it happens in time is the other question. that's what remains to be seen, and if i'm being honest that is what makes me nervous. i thi can happen in time if people commit to making it happen, because to your point what will happen in texas is hb-3 will most likely pass, and hb-3 is one of the most draconian voter suppression bills we have seen in the country. look, voter suppression bills either add more procedures to vote, they add more requirements to vote or create new ways for votes to get kicked off or discounted. hb-3 does all three. that's what will happen in texas, in a variety of different ways, some overt, some subtle. the only way we're going to get away from t
