let's go straight to chief meteorologist jason boyer. jason, when can this arrive? >> jason: it's going to come overnight in the form of clouds. cold enough for snow because it's teens and tweptnties right now for air temperatures. weather alerts. winter weather advisories are out. it goes from the border counties all the way back to middle ten continue. nashville, chattanooga, haywood, swain, graham, cherokee, also macon county. one to three inches of snow fall. the lower end in the valleys. could be icy spots with that. then we have winter storm warnings in georgia. they're looking at ice in northern georgia. areas like st. louis and throughout missouri and illinois. we'll see that system spread overnight. day break, we'll see it spread west. another heavier band of snow working through east tennessee, across the mountains and even the valley floors of buncombe county will get snow. prepare for slick spots. 21 for the temp tonight at 7. down to 17 at 11. wind chills in the single digits. we'll talk about the even bigger coming up. >> tammy: stick with news 13 thro

begin our live team coverage tonight of the winter storm headed our way with chief meteorologist jason boyer. jason, what's in store this evening? >> jason: this evening is going to be quiet. it's overnight and tomorrow. when you wake up, there will be snow and ice on the ground. we've got the flake-o-meter all the way maxed out by a sweat. it's going to be a lot. dangerous travel and significant snow and ice accumulations for anybody in the magenta color. you can't get away from this. these winter storm warnings go all the way back to the west including nashville, knoxville. east to charlotte, fayetteville, even over to raleigh. that is a massive area, folks. it's a major storm that's going to have that much of a scope to it. winter storm timeline, icy mix of snow. friday morning, mix of snow and ice. periods of heavy snow. it may not be snowing continuously. but snow nonetheless. in to missouri, it is tracking south and diving off the coast. that's where it bombs out and strengthens to a major winter storm. we'll be dealing with all kinds of wintery weather but mostly really been trying to

. >> tammy: we begin with chief meteorologist jason boyer. jason, what can we expect? jrjts we can expect flakes beginning to fly as early as tomorrow morning. it is not a major system but it's going to be the biggest snow system we've seen pretty much all winter long in asheville. in is not the storm we're talking about toward the end of the week. nothing like it. in fact, that's probably going to be a bigger storm for us. this is the storm we're watching tonight. little snow bands right through kansas city, iowa. start to energize some snowfall, if you will, across the area later on tonight. bands of snow around day break tomorrow. already working in the jackson, swain, graham county. heavier snow bands may hold off until afternoon tomorrow. i'm thinking two to three, top end four inches in some of the highest elevations close to the tennessee border. snow comes on friday. 20s right now for temperatures in most mountain valleys. you go farther west, you'll find 30s. breezy and very cold this evening. by 11 o'clock, we're down to 17 with wind chills in the single digi

jason boyer starts us off. >> jason: we've been watching the model, zack and i today. we've ratcheted up. the flake-o-meter is up to the top now. hopefully you bought the bread and milk and other things of interest. we're talking serious snow and ice. now here's your winter storm timeline. tonight it's an icy mix of freezing rain and snow. friday morning, when you wake up, there will be snow and there will be ice on the ground already. so it's not time to go out and drive around and check out the scenery. i think saturday afternoon it will taper quickly and shift to the mountains. the higher elevations as this storm bombs off the north carolina coast. where is it right now? right here. look at this spin. it doesn't look like much, does it? strengthen. one is going to be off the coast. one is going to be over western north carolina. temperatures a little deceiving right now. it is way above freezing almost anywhere in western north carolina, exception up in boone. these temperatures will be cooling. after sunset, they'll drop off. once the initial rain, sleet and snow,

. >> frank: we want to get right to chief meteorologist jason boyer. >> jason: we're seeing about a foot of snow and by the end of it we're going to see well over a foot in many places like we expected. the only places that have really been surprising. again, this is how tricky it gets down here. not much in graham. that's been a little more of a surprise for us. the idea solution really coming to fruition for us here in terms of snow fall. look at the bands here. jackson and transylvania. this is going to move right up here from the southwest to the northeast and hammer these areas with another couple inches of snow in the next hour or two. macon county, you're getting in the south end of the county. highlands, franklin missing out same thing in the french broad river valley, a break. all that snow is going to work back over us shortly. mostly a break until you get down in to the southern end of the county. and new snows developing. north of waynesville for magagie valley, towards cataloochee. big picture. this is still to come. this is the upper energy with this storm swinging in throu

chief meteorologist jason boyer is here with our weekend forecast. >> jason: now tonight we have to worry about some fog. even a little snow coming down in the highest elevations of the smokys. low clouds and poor visibility because the fog has developed. we're down below a half mile visibility in asheville. five mile visibility in burnsville. the lower the visibility, obviously the harder it is to see when that fog starts to thicken up. temperatures in the 30s right now. we're close to freezing. i think we'll stay just above it tonight. but it's going to be close. watch out for some patchy black ice. again, look how warm some places are out west. this is where you're going to find the cooler weather at night. warmer higher up in elevation. temperature inversion going on. we have a little more wind kicking up keeping a lot of those places warmer than us here in asheville. in fact, it's a gusty wind over the southwest portion in the viewing area of south carolina. here's that system spinning through today clipping out in to the mid-atlantic. here's that next system. this is energy that's g

chief meteorologist jason boyer is here. >> jason: yeah, single digits air temperatures right now. we're looking down on the slopes. they are making plenty of snow. it's 6 degrees. things to keep in mind. the drips of faucets. could be pipes bursting if you don't take the precautions. wear plenty of layers. check on pets and those that are elderly. they are susceptible as well. those pets need plenty of water and blankets if they are outside. keep in mind, we already had schools starting later tomorrow because of the cold. we'll have those on screen for you. windchill advisory, 6:00. they go until noon tomorrow, 5 to 15 degrees below 0 for windchills in a lot of these areas. we're already seeing windchills close to 0 at asheville and they'll continue to drop off here. we'll see about 5 to 10 below in the morning. if you don't have much wind, we'll still get down into the single digits in a lot of places. 70 degrees. teens as far south as henderson county. breezy at times. that puts the windchills again 0 to 7 below to start the day. 20s by the lunch hour. morning flare in the upsta

jason boyer joins us with our skywatch forecast. jason, will the weather warm up at all this week? >> jason: yes, it will a little bit. our system that brought snow is now well to the east of us. it's spinning off the coast of the mid-atlantic right now bringing snows to the mid east. this is bringing snow showers back to southeast kentucky, we'll also get snow rung out in the mountains. watch out for black ice and bursts of light snow near along the tennessee border. it's temperatures that will also be the big story tonight. below freezing in most mountain locations. and the wind is starting to crank up. this is just going to mean a brutally cold night. we'll have wind chills subzero in many cases. wind chill advisories have been issued for much of the area, including asheville. look at the temperatures this evening going 29 at 7. 26 at 9. 23 by 11. we'll talk about our chances for rain and snow the rest of the week coming up. >> ashlea: odds are when you woke up this morning outside it looked a lot more like winter. news 13's kimberly king witnessed it first hand in spruce pine.
