correspondent jason carroll is out in it all. good morning, jason. >> reporter: good morning, christine. if you look behind me, this is where much of the rioting broke out here last night. you can still see state police. they are still out here in riot gear standing there holding that position there. a bobcat and an armorred vehicle next to them. such sad night for baltimore. 15 officers injured. businesses burned. cars looted. cars set on fire. a lot of people questioning how this could have happened. a lot of people not expecting what you saw, christine and the country saw and the world saw last nightday and night. state troopers out here for hours yesterday as the city was under siege. the police commissioner saying that perhaps saying they were outflanked and out numbered for a time. groups of rioters looted a local cvs. then a liquor store and a check cashing store. fire crews were challenged as they were putting out fires. some looters and rioters cut their water hoses making it difficult to do their jobs. the mayor coming o

my colleagues ryan young, jason carroll, chris quo most out in the crowds now. i want to go to jason. i don't know if jason is anywhere near this. jason, if you can hear me what are you seeing at your location? >> reporter: don, i can hear you. i'm standing right here at the front line here where you can see a number of the police officers that are still here still in their stance. we've seen a number of people small number throwing bottles, water bottles, glass bottles at police. what's been happening is, every few moments or so the number of police officers here in this one single formation start moving a few feet. they make an announcement clear the area then they start moving a few more feet. continuously asking those who are here to move back and to clear the area. what's been interesting, don, i know you saw this in some of the video earlier, not seeing it at this point, but there were members of the community standing out there between the small fraction of people who are out here and this front line even as incoming glass bottles and water bottles were be

now, it's jason carroll. do we know how the video ended up in the hands of the family? story. scott's brother tell me last sunday they went back to the scene where it happened to pay a special tribute for scott. and at that point, this young man walks up to them. they didn't know who he was and said there's something i must show you. and i know that you heard scott's mother talk about faith and her faith. the family believes it was fate and their faith that actually brought them all together. >> it's incredible. and i just think it's one thing to suddenly witness a scene like that and to videotape it but to continue doing it after you've seen an officer gunning somebody down and shooting them in the back and possibly planting evidence and continue to videotape that. >> when we were there at the scene, he was pretty close. 20 yards away maybe. i mean, very, very close and to have the courage to keep rolling when all that was happening. it's incredible. >> jason, i appreciate the reporting. later today, walter scott's mother, judy, we had a remarkable conversation and i s

i want to go to our jason carroll. everyone what you're seeing now. >> reporter: well, it's basically what we've been seeing for the past hour or so, anderson. you can still see the police line that is out here. there's still a number of people asking everyone who's still gathered at this location here, at pennsylvania and north, to go home. we've counted, anderson, possibly around 200 people, moving in and out of this tiny area right here. most of the people who were out here earlier complied and took their children home, took their loved ones home. but there are still some people o out here. i married my colleague, miguel marquez talk about this a little earlier, this relationship between the community and the media. when you look at the number of people who are in this crowd, it's difficult to tell from this camera point of view, but a lot of these people here are also members of the media. and the community is saying that because we're here, some of those people in the community who might not be here, are staying he

jason carroll brings us up to date. >> reporter: the police chief was interrupted by angry and vocal protesters demanding answers after seeing the video that shows officer michael slager repeatedly shooting walt walter scott in the back. the man who shot the cell phone video wednesday feidin santana and he says he was on the way to work when he saw the struggle between slager and scott. >> and i saw them down on the floor before i started to recording. they were down on the floor, and the police had control of the situation. he had control of scott. and scott was trying to just get away from the taser, which the taser, you know, you can hear the sound of the taser. >> reporter: the video appears to show that they started to wrestle over the object possibly the taser, and it is an object that falls on the ground as scott turns to the run, and then slager fires eight shots, and four strikes him in the back. at no point is slager yelling a warning, he just fires. and then he calls for back up. >> shots fired. suspect down. he grabbed my taser. >> reporter: then he is seen walking over t

. >> let's bring in jason carroll on the ground in north charleston, south carolina. good morning, jason. what's the latest? >> reporter: first of all, obviously santana's video is going to be key to the investigations that are taking place here in south carolina. there are multiple investigations that are taking place. you've got the fbi. you've got the criminal investigation going on as well. you've got the south carolina law enforcement division. that state agency that is conducting the investigation, that is the one that a lot of people here, john, are focusing on. just a few moments ago i actually spoke to the spokesperson from that agency called s.l.e.d. for short, his name tom berry. when i asked him about what sort of evidence they have, specifically the dash cam videos. that seems to be the question in trms of how many dash cam videos are out there and what are on the videos. when i spoerk to berry, he said there are multiple dash cam videos. he did confirm that he said in all likelihood most of those dash cam videos probably won't show that much simply becaus

jason carroll takes a closer look at the strategy his defense attorneys hope will spare his life. >> reporter: it's not exactly what one might expect to hear from an attorney defending her client, but judy clark closed her case, basically telling jurors that her client, dzhokhar tsarnaev, is guilty. "we've seen shocking videos, we've seen horrific photos. for this destruction, suffering, and profound loss, there is no excuse. no one is trying to make one." also saying, "dzhokhar tsarnaev stands ready by your verdict to be held accountable for his actions." not making excuses and ready to be held accountable? so what exactly is clark's defense for someone who the prosecution says brought triemp back yards and main -- terrorism to back yard and main street? she told jurors, "if not for tamerlan, it would not have happened." she argued that dzhokhar tsarnaev was under the influence of his brother. if the jury believes, it it could be enough to save him from the death penalty. a strategy that's worked before. >> a shocking series of shootings in what is normally a quiet area of the capit

thank you very much jason carroll. jason, stay with us, as well. i want to get to my colleague, brian todd, cnn's brian todd. brian, tell us what you're seeing and where you are. >> reporter: don, we are approaching the intersection where we're seeing a large crowd of people kind of in a standoff with police here at pennsylvania and north avenues. trying to make our way a little bit closer in here to the police. this is a large phalanx of police officers here as we make our way. somebody is -- the officers are getting commands here. i'm not sure exactly what they're doing, but, you know, we were here earlier, we were also out earlier, marching with a couple hundred protesters who started here by the way, and marched several miles around this gillmore neighborhood of west baltimore downtown and then back here and it was a very dynamic situation. it did get tense. there were volunteers out here earlier, don, who were keeping the crowd back from police and were telling young people as the curfew approached to leave, and almost physically you know, mov

jason carroll also outside the same courthouse where the fbi and nypd have been reporting on how they arrested these two women in brooklyn who officials allege wanted to build bombs to kill americans. jason, you have had a look at the criminal complaint. what do we know about what these women were allegedly planning to do? >> reporter: well they are identified at noelle velentzas, 28 years old, a mother she has a young daughter in elementary school and her roommate asia siddiqui 31 years old. both of them lived in queens. they were roommates together. both of them charged with conspiring to build a weapon of mass destruction. according to the criminal complaint, the two of these two gathered together and conspired to build an ied, improvised explosive device. they went to their local home depot several times in queens and gathered and got all their material together material including multiple propane gas tanks. they also had instructions on how to transform those gas tanks into explosive devices. apparently one of the suspects became obsessed with pressure cooker bombs after the bost

cnn's jason carroll has more now on the alleged terror plot. >> reporter: they're u.s. citizens who live in queens, new york. the two women identified in a federal criminal complaint as 28-year-old noel e velentzas and 40-year-old asia siddiqui. they are homegrown terrorists planning to detonate a bomb in t the united states. in the 29 page complaint, the u.s. attorney details how the women allegedly express their support for, quote, violent jihad. prosecutors say the women researched and acquired materials needed to make various types of bombs including fertilizer, a pressure-cooker device and multiple propane tank tanks which siddiqui kept in her apartment build ging. her attorney spoke outside of the courthouse. >> my client enters a plea of not guilty, even with an indictment and she and i will address everything in the courtroom where it belongs. >> reporter: authorities say the suspects were not after civilians, but instead, the police and military. even taking inspiration from the funeral of slain police officer rafael ramos believing it would be an easy target.

jason carroll is with me with more. we were just talking yesterday about these two young women, 28 and 31 who were inspired to wage jihad and now this won. >> now we have another one, her name is keonna thomas she is from philadelphia. she is accused according to this new criminal complaint. it seems like all we're doing lately is reading criminal complaints. she attempted to travel overseas quote, in order to join fight with and martyr herself in behalf of isil. according to federal agents as far back as 2013 she started tweeting things about jihad or twitter. one of the tweets that we have here pretty much says it all. quote, if we truly knew the realities, we would all be rushing to join our brothers in the front lines to pray allah. accept us as uheda, that means martyrs. that is one of the things she tweeted way back in 2013. she was on their radar. they looked at her travel plans. in february she got her passport. last month she got her visa to travel to turkey. then bought a ticket to travel to barcelona, then th

jason carroll has more on this investigation. >> reporter: this is the dash cam video from officer michael slager's patrol car. it shows what happened leading up to the traffic stop that ended in the deadly shooting. it shows slager following scott, who is driving a mercedes. slager pulls him over for a broken taillight. the officer then approaches scott's car. >> license and registration. >> reporter: slager returns to his patrol car. then for a moment, scott gets out. he's instructed to get back inside. but then moments later, scott makes a run for it. slager gives chase. the dash cam video does not show the struggle between scott and slager, nor the fatal shooting that followed. >> nothing in this video demonstrates that the officer's life or the life of another was threatened. and the question here is whether the use of force was excessive. [ gun fire ] >> reporter: the cell phone video cap churned by a bystander shows officer slager shooting scott in the back, firing several times, then radioing dispatch saying scott grabbed his taser. >> subject is down. he grabbed my taser. >> repor

jason carroll is in downtown baltimore where he just talked to the mayor. jason, what does she say? >> reporter: well quite frankly, it was a frank conversation as the mayor came out here. this is a symbolic spot. let me set the scene for where we are so you can get a better understanding of where she showed up. a few moments ago, pennsylvania avenue and west north, this was the flash point of so much unrest out here. you have some of the state troopers out here in riot gear and managing the spot right across the street on the other end, and that's the cvs, carol, that was looted and burned. the mayor was out here a few moments ago, and the governor out here as well. i asked her a number of questions, most importantly about the city's response was it enough? and i asked her, carol, about a woman i met out here a pregnant woman that came out here and said something that a lot of people have been feeling in this community, which is basically that the city as a whole has failed many of the young people out here. i asked her about both of those issues and i want to listen to what she ha

let's get right to cnn's jason carroll live in north charleston.ger has now been fired, he's been arrested he's been booked he's in prison. city officials held a news conference today to talk about the incident. protesters interrupted a few times with chants of "no justice, no peace." it was very testy. describe that for us. >> reporter: yeah. testy would be an understatement. some parts of that were downright unruly. when the mayor there stepped up also city police chief, when he was there as well. at one point in particular when the police chief was questioned about cpr, as you know according to some of the police officers showed up there at the scene immediately following the shooting suggested that -- and simply said that the officers performed cpr. some there at the press conference were questioning that. it doesn't appear at least in some parts of the video if the officers performed cpr. in other parts of the video, it's unclear. then there's a later part in the video where it does seem as if one officer does seem to be performing some sort o

cnn's jason carroll joins me live in north charleston, south carolina.st heard from slager's lawyers. what are they saying? >> reporter: yeah. well they are frustrated very frustrated at the way that information is being released here. a spokeswoman for officer slager's law firm released a statement late this afternoon. i will read part of it to you. it says unfortunately, despite having made requests he he meaning andy savage the attorney representing officer slager he has not received the cooperation from law enforcement that the media has and he has yet to receive any investigative documents, audio or videotapes other than the copy of mr. slager's arrest warrant. this as the investigation into the shooting jake as you know is well under way. walter scott is at the wheel of this mercedes. dash cam video shows the 50-year-old pulling over for the north charleston police officer who would kill him minutes later. >> can i see your license, registration and insurance card? >> reporter: all seems routine for officer michael slager until scott exits the car

i want to go to jason carroll, also in baltimore tonight. what are you seeing? >> well erin we started off at that cvs and about 100 protesters started marching through the streets. they ended up here at this basketball court about a half mile away from where we were. i wanted to bring in the folks marching. there were chants of we want peace. who started that what was the meaning behind that? people want to see nonviolence out here not a repeat of last night? >> it was started by members of the community, and we just basically want peace, we want justice, and we actually want media to get a glimpse of what baltimore is really about. this is exactly what it is just a bunch of unity. we're trying to come together to make a bond of peace. >> what happened yesterday? i mean where did it go wrong? >> it started with a rumor for a flier that there was going to be a purge at mondawmin mall but my question is if there was no threat to students why would the schools allow the students to leave at normal time as opposed to keeping them until the outside threat was gone?

jason carroll is "outfront" in baltimore. jason, you're in the middle of the crowds.t are the protesters saying what's the mood? it sounds more energetic and enthused than it did last night. >> reporter: a lot of energy a lot of enthusiasm. as we're marching now through the streets of downtown baltimore, this is a protest erin that started at johns hopkins university then they marched to city hall. now they're going to march back to penn station. as we walk through this community, stopping briefly, people looking out of their apartment buildings as they watch hundreds and hundreds of people peacefully i re-emphasize that peacefully march through the city. this is a diverse crowd, multi-cultural crowd. i met a group of nurses who are out here holding big signs saying marching for healing. then students from johns hopkins. one common denominator they all have is they want to be able to show the world, show the country, that people from all walks of life can come together and can march peacefully in speaking out for a cause. they say that they're going to march all the w

cnn's jason carroll is joining us from baltimore right now. update our viewers, jason, what were the main points they were making? >> reporter: a few main points that they were making at the press conference that wrapped up just about ten minutes or so ago. as you heard earlier, they did confirm that five of the six officers did, in fact they said on the same day that freddie gray was taken into custody that five of the six officers did voluntarily give statements in terms of what happened. one of the officers chose not to. they did not identify which officer that was. one of the other points that was made when asked if they thought any of the officers had committed a criminal act, michael davey, the attorney for the fraternal order of police said based on the information that he has received so far, he believes that none of the officers committed a criminal act. they also released a statement before the press conference got under way. and that caused a bit of tension in the room because when you read through the statement that gene ryan the pr

jason carroll is with us.you can hear the words, taser, taser, taser, at the very end of that video that's just been released. for our viewers not familiar with the background tell us the decision making why this video was released a little while ago, why they made this public. >> reporter: full disclosure. that's the basic answer to that one, wolf. the investigators wanted to make sure they were putting all of the evidence that they had in terms of video out there for the public to see, given the important nature of the case and given how sensitive the community is to what happened here. that was part of the decision making process. in terms of why it took this long when i spoke to one of the investigators a little earlier, basically they have six dash cam tapes. they were basically deciding do we release all of them do we release the ones most important? officers racing through the streets and doesn't show anything pertinent to what happened here. the decision was made to release three. one that you see here

jason carroll is live outside that courthouse. these women trying to build bombs, they had done extensive planning. how far along were they? >> reporter: well extensive planning and planning for an extended period of time for more than a year according to the complaint, in terms of how long investigators have been looking at these two suspects. they are identified as noelle velentzas, 28 years old. she's married, she's the mother of a young girl and her roommate asia siddiqui both of them roommates from queens new york. they made their first court appearance erin a little earlier today. when they stood in front of the court the judge asked them if they understood the charges they were facing. both of them said yes. according to the federal complaint, both of them had planned to use an improvised explosive device. both of them apparently in possession of things such as propane gas tanks, other bomb-making materials, including pressure cookers. apparently erin they were inspired by the boston bombing where pressure cookers were used

cnn's jason carroll looks at the new developments for us. >> victor, christi her ailian was the youngame is keonna thomas a 30-year-old. she's accused of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization. let me read you one quote reads that thomas "attempted to travel overseas in order to join fight with and martyr herself on behalf of isil." as far back as 2013 federal agents say she was posting jihad jihadi tweets on twitter and in 2013 allegedly september an electronic communication to a known somali terrorist, also again according to the complaint several times over the course of last year she reached out to another known terrorist in syria. federal investigators then began to look at her travel plans, she got a visa from turk yu then arranged travel to go to barcelona, spain. if she's convicted she faces a maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. her case not as specific as the case of what we saw with the two women in new york city. we do have an update on that. noelle valenctzas 28 years old, married has a young daughter and adopted daughter. her husband

jason carroll takes a look at the defense strategy in the boston bombing case. >> reporter: it's not exactly what one might expect to hear from an attorney defending her client. judy clark closed her case, basically telling jurors that her client dzhokhar tsarnaev is guilty. quote, we've seen shocking videos. we've seen horrific photos. for this destruction and suffering and profound loss there is no excuse. no one is trying to make one. dzhokhar tsarnaev stands ready to be held accountable. not making excuses and ready to be held accountable? so what exactly is clark's defense for someone the prosecution says brought terrorism to back yards and to main street. clark told jurors if not for tamerlan, it would not have happened. throughout the trial, she has argued that tsarnaev did it because he was under the influence of his older brother tamerlan. if the jury accepts that argument it could be enough to save tsarnaev from the death penalty. it has happened before. >> a shocking series of shootings. >> reporter: october 2002. the nation's belt way in the grip of fear as random victims

our correspondent jason carroll was there in the middle of it overnight. he has the latest for us. jason, set the table for us. bring us up to speed. >> reporter: even up until a few hours ago, we were at a rite aid that was set on fire. just when you thought it was all going to be over even at that late hour still unrest. firefighters were able to get there and put the fire out. a lot of people wondering when it will all be over. let me set the scene. we are on northwest avenue. you can look up the street and see state police out in riot gear. armored cars on the streets. all of the debris from the violence that happened yesterday. yesterday, this was a city under siege. the police commissioner saying at one point they were out numbered and outflanked. groups of rioters looted a cvs. they went to a check cashing store and liquor store. they threw bottles at police for hours. breaking off in smaller groups. fire crews were challenged as they were trying to put out fires after rioters came out and cut their hoses. the baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake speaking out. why was the
