jason carroll live in chicago for the trump event, joe johns is following the clinton campaign. let's begin with you, jason. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. both candidates are basically out this morning claiming victory laps. donald trump for his part out raising money, claiming victory. he's going to be attending this breakfast at the polish american alliance here in chicago. we should tell you that overnight, the building that's just right behind me was actually vandalized. there was anti-trump obscenities written not only on the outside of the building but on the sidewalk as well. city workers overnight and early into the morning got out, started cleaning up the building ahead of trump's arrival. trump, a controversial figure here in chicago as you know, carol. in terms of combatting violence here in the city, he's been calling for reinstituting stop and frisk, using it here in the city. you know that was a controversial practice used in new york city. it was ruled to be unconstitutional. a federal judge basically ruled and said it was a form of racial profiling but

let's bring in jason carroll. jason, the big "if" is whether trump will do that. the "new york times" delved into this well roger ailes was trying to prep him at gun of his golf courses and trump was distract and they got into past campaign stories and they weren't focused and roger ailes was going through his ousting from fox news. is there a sense from the trump camp that this time it will be different. that someone will take the lead here, lock him in a room and make him drill down on this? >> well, look, i mean despite the public proclamations from trump that he won the debate it's clear, privately there's talk he did not perform as well as he should have that there were missed opportunities that he did not hit hillary clinton hard enough on issues such as the economy, jobs, benghazi, her trustworthiness. that he took the bait when he should not have and didn't respond as well as he should have when he was challenged on issues such as birtherism, his taxes, issues such as -- such like that, allegations he's a sexist. and i think what's happening is the campaig

let's go to jason carroll following the campaign for us today in virginia beach, virginia. we know trump plans to talk about veterans affairs at the event but he has just added to the ongoing confusion about his immigration reforms, jason. tell me about that. >> reporter: well, look. let me just first say that the trump campaign will tell you that donald trump has always been consistent and clear on one point. he has always said, no path to citizenship. no amnesty of course in reference to these millions upon millions undocumented people in the united states, many of them convicted of a crime, many of them have families. . trump campaign will say he's always been consistent on that end. his critics will say he's flip-flopped on this issue, been vague or at the very least, unclear about it. well, donald trump was asked about it again yesterday, and, brooke, once again his critics saying he's left the door open in terms of what happens to some of these undocumented people who have once again not been convicted of crimes, living in the u.s. what would happen to them. trump wei
