woodruff: after being locked up for nearly a year in a tehran prison, washington post journalist jason rezaian finally had his first day of court this morning. family members and journalists were not allowed to attend the tehran revolutionary court session. he was accompanied only by his attorney. rezaian, who holds both u.s. and iranian citizenship, was arrested with his iranian wife last july. she was released on bail in october. in april, the washington post reported that their reporter was charged with espionage and other crimes including "collaborating with hostile governments" and "propaganda against the establishment." we invited the iranian ambassador to the united nations to come on the program to talk about jason rezaian's case. his office did not respond to our offer. we are joined, however, by jason's brother, ali rezaian. we welcome you to the program. >> thank you for having me. disploo. >> woodruff: so what do you know when what happened in that room today? >> we know this was the first day of the court. they were would go in and read jason the charges against him and the inform

katty: for more on jason rezaian 's case i spoke with our state apartment correspondent. barbara, what do we know about what he is being charged with? barbara: we don't know anything from the iranians, all we knows what his lawyer has said, and he is only met with her once. she says there were four counts of espionage, including collecting information and passing it to a hostile government, presumably the united states, and have again to about the islamic regime. that is something the u.s. administration and the washington post has said is absurd. he was doing his job, collecting information and publishing it. he has called -- they have called again for the charges to be dismissed, and for him to be released. katty: helen usual is it for the state department to comment on it espionage case? barbara: they have been commenting on this case for some time. secretary kerry has been raising this case with his iranian counterpart stirring the month of negotiation on the nuclear program, along with two other americans in prison. it has been mentioned before. it is something we wi

jason rezaian accused of espionage, began today behind closed doors. it was adjourned a few hours later with no word on the start date of the next session. the united states and the washington post have condemned to the trial and are calling for rezaian's immediate release. let's talk to douglas, the foreign editor of the paper. have you had any contact with jason? douglas: no, not for 10 months since he was arrested when authorities burst into his apartment. very few people have been able to speak with jason. we've had indirect communication. annette: what have they produced to support to their claim? douglas: the answer is very little. we don't know exactly what charges they are bringing and what evidence. the trouble with the secret trial is iran, everything is secret. so his lawyer can't really tell us what is in the proceedings. she can say there is no basis for the charges and we can certainly say the idea jason was acting as a spy is absurd and ludicrous. annette: teharn does not recognize the internationality of the matter. douglas: that is rig

meanwhile, next week in iran "washington post" reporter jason rezaian will appear in a tehran court. rezaian has been detained for 306 days on charge of espionage, charges that are not backed up by any evidence. according to an attorney the trial will begin on may 26th. and there are widespread doubts that it will be a fair trial.
