when you look at jc penney, i initiate coverage with a positive rating several weeks ago and there was a point at that point when he basically says, look, there are challenges at jc penney and the sentiment toward the stock had been way too negative and they were fast to dismiss the long-term potential of the turnaround and what we've seen in the last few weeks or so is that incrementally positive data points of jc penney and the event today in texas which i'm attending will be for most investors, the first time they see this store and what ron johnson's true vision for the company is. i would be nervous if i was a short here. >> brian, you write about a few things. one, you think the challenges are transitional and you mapped out some stores and you see they tend to operate in many areas without direct competition to macy's and then you talk about the tracking, at least for the month and the quarter looking pretty good.

jc, over to you. >> all right. we are getting ready for rosh shop that which is going to be -- rosh hashana which is going to be next week. i have here with me the author of the kosher baker. what are you making today? >> we're making cinnamon apricot pull apart bakla. it's sugar, dairy free margarine but you can use butter too. you'll mix these together. after you do that, you end up with this really nice squishy dough like this after it rises for two hours or socht all you have to do is roll it out and cut circles out of it. about two and a half inches. >> smells so good. >> anything with cinnamon will smell good. you fill these with a little bit of cinnamon sugar and apricot jam like this. this is the fun part. you can enclose the stuff inside. you make these little balls like this. and then you have a little ball and then all you do is you roll it in here and in the cinnamon sugar and put it in a bundt pan. you fill it up. this takes time. after you bake it, it comes out like that, like this huge crown. >> this

to contrast them with jc penney, macy's is on fire. jc penney, there is a lot of criticism.umbers are down. >> absolutely. uh m macy's put together great results. terry lundgren and the team have continued to hit the ball out of the park. we have been beneficiary of that with our tommy hilfiger and calvin klein. they are two of the largest brands within their complex. we are benefitting by their great execution. i would like the to think we're a real significant part of their success as well. >> going forward, there were two items in the conference call that were confusing to me. you're worried about foreign exchange head winds. the dollar has been getting weaker here. the second is that i have been waiting for the raw costs to go down. you are talking about maybe a 5 to 7% break in raw costs. couldn't it be more? cotton is up huge. >> raw material costs are down more than that. the 5 to 6% is overall finished goods including labor. >> cotton isn't everything. >> raw materials aren't everything. labor is a bigger component. clearly the benefit we will see in this year's thur

but i think jc penney's issues are long-term.rry too much about that share going back to jc penney. >> if you had to divvy up between luxury, discounters, dollars, themes, is there one element of the sector that's most favorable right now? >> well, i have to say that this year inventories are in amazing position. they're very lean, especially in a teen space. you and i talked a year ago about the fact that gross margins were down 500 to 1,000 basis points in the teen space. that's not going to happen this year because you have lean inventories. so the teen space is set up pretty well for the holiday. >> and david, last word to you. and "the new york post," there's stories about cotton prices year-over-year, down 30%, that's going to help gaap, right? >> it should help margins overall, that's always the big question with retail, what's going to happen with margins? sales have been pretty good, but they've had to be a bit tight with promotions. if they can pick up margins with lower cotton, that does help and that's a positive. >>
