taylor: you talk about retail, you are also with jcpenney, for example.ou make of the general landscape as you take a look at the retailers? companies like jcpenney are struggling and others like walmart are getting it. how do you differentiate? ron: customers are really savvy. they want newness and the products they buy, shopping experiences. companies in the middle who have not been updating their stores and their websites and their products, i call tiredness. the customer does not like to go to tired retail. they like things new and exciting. we are in a world where we are post-digital. disruption from online shopping is over. all of the great physical retailers have figured out how to compete, their stocks are at all-time highs. target, walmart, best buy. they have advantages built in. if i am a target customer, i could order online, have it delivered to me. i could drive and pick it up if i want it now. i can shop the old-fashioned way. even in the store, there is lots of technology deployed. you can check out on your own. the retail stores have foug

as you look at brick and mortar companies, sears, jcpenney, kmart, forever 21, and you see what amazon has been able to do, give us a sense of where we are in our economy. how transformational is this period right now, based on your expertise? mr. steyer: it's funny. i have always felt as if every company -- and you are talking about the retail sector -- the traditional, big-box retailers like sears and kmart, and you are talking about an online retailer like amazon coming out of nowhere, originally just selling books. my thesis has always been that whatever industry it is, the company that's going to succeed in the long run, the company that is over time going to gain market share and be profitable, is the one that has more information technology. basically information technology is like corporate smarts. so you are able to get information faster, react to it faster, and make better decisions. when you look at a mall-based retailer competing with amazon, amazon had better information technology. they could disrupt based on their ability to process and use information. if you think we

al an len questrum here, the guy you know as brainiac behind jcpenney.happy to have you alan. >> hi, neil. neil: good to see you, at least the retail federation put out numbers last week that showed they think it will be a very strong christmas. strong holiday season in general. up to four 1/2 to 5% oaf last years sales. do you buy that? >> i think it will be a good economy for the consumer and for retailers because we do have a very strong economy relative to the rest of the world and even relative to ourselves. we are far better today than we were three years ago. you have to look back, say a lot of that is the result of the president's tax cuts and tax revisions that he has done two years ago. that had huge effect on people being hired on the unemployment rate. i think today people have a lot more money than they have two years ago. so they will be buying. now increases coming through in the tariffs. most of those have not been seen in the stores as of yet. but they certainly will be seen as you start into the next year. but most of the products that
