it's not easy for jeb bush. be a lot easier for marco rubio. >> i read that you say jeb bush's candidacy has always been flawed. how do you mean? >> well, i don't know that it's always been flawed. there's sort of a disconnect between his image nationally and in florida. in florida he was viewed as truly a bold conservative governor who got things done, pushed an agenda, had a ton of energy. national nationally, partly because the party has changed so much, he's viewed as sort of a tired guy, out of step with where the party is today and just not quite able to connect with people in a way that marco rubio is. >> was jeb bush really strong and sharp in the florida debates? >> he's never been a great debater, but that's the other thing with this race. jeb has kind of had it size. he had one tough race way back in 1994 and he lost that race. and then he had a very easy election race, outspent his opponent. so he's not used to this level of political competition. maybe he's not up to it. >> marco rubio, you say he's

but still, doug, how does this affect jeb bush moving forward? >> i think jeb has to square off on donald trump and defend his brother like he's doing. i mean, this is the heart and soul of any george w. bush legacy is he kept the country safe after 9/11. created homeland security and we didn't have another attack on his watch. trump is muddying the waters here. i think jeb is passive towards donald trump, it's going to look terrible. so he has to, i think, rachet it up even more and have the argument that he's starting to have that donald trump knows nothing about foreign policy. we can go back into history and blame every president for anything that happened on their watch. it's not helpful for how we go forward right now. trump i think is going to alienate some republicans on taking this stance on 9/11 where he doesn't alienate them when he criticizes george w. bush for the iraq war. >> all right. doug, bernie, kurt, thank you very much. a reminder, donald trump will be on cnn's new day tomorrow morning which starts at 67 o'clock a.m. eastern.

also from buzz feed, jeb bush continues death spiral at gop debate. agazine, jeb died on that stage. how do you turn perception around, even if perception isn't reality yet? >> there's really no way. he has to hope the people in front of him implode, and that's a very tough expectation. i mean, trump and carson, people have been saying for a long time, myself included, these guys might not make it, but now you have people like marco rubio who are legit candidtes who are also in front of him and who people seem to perceive to be stronger, so if you're jeb bush, what you have to do is go on the offensive, you have to stop managing the public's expectations about what you're going to do or not do at the debates and perform on debates, go aggressively against the front runners, clearly establish and articulate an agenda and can't rely on the fact you have the biggest machine. at some point the machine has to function, otherwise it's not just iowa he has to worry about. you can lose iowa, but you can't lose new hampshire, you can't have legs in this thing.s

jeb bush is raising money.e first full quarter as a candidate, he announced he raised $13 million. and trump's raised a lot of money for someone who says he doesn't need it, right? but there was more to that, that he spent quite a bit of money. >> that's absolutely right. you know, he's raised a lot of money, but he also goes on the trail and talks about how cheap this campaign has been for him. he talks about how he's only put in about $2 million of his own into this account. well, it turns out, that's not the whole picture. donald trump has spent $2 million of his own spent, but spent about $5.6 million total, which means he's spent an awful lot of other people's money as well. and while he may be very far ahead in the polls, it's pretty clear this money race is heating up. tonight, new fund-raising numbers show the bush campaign isn't going anywhere. >> it's an amount that will be competitive, for sure. >> reporter: bush raised $13.4 million in the third quarter, a haul that puts him near the top of the gop

he has eight and jeb bush has 24. a metric to look at to see if marco rubio could capitalize on what was a big night for him. >> bush understands the issues and he can't articulate them and he's petulant and that doesn't work. the most impressive answer is when rubio brought up vocational education. he's deep into what is going on policy-wise. kasich really understands of the issues, but he can't get his message across in this debate format effectively enough i think to capture the imagination of voters because he's really substantive in a way that's presidential. >> interesting. >> i agree. marco rubio had a great night. i think carly also had another great debate performance. we'll see where she goes with it after this. i thought john kasich, saw a different john kasich than we've seen before and that will benefit him but i thought it was a great night for the party. i thought the party looked substantive and looked real and issues-oriented and finally uniting around the real opponent which is the democrat and hilla

from the jeb bush for president campaign mysteriously leaked to the press. leaked to "u.s. news & world report." the document was a 112-page internal campaign blueprint, all sorts of graphs and metrics to try to assure bush campaign donors and supporters that everything's fine, jeb bush is in great shape. and we don't know exactly. that leak may have been strategic. it may have been a way to try to quiet questions about the campaign. but whatever it was meant to do and whatever it did overall, in a very granular sense it was also a interesting look inside the jeb campaign and what they think is important. for example, my favorite slide was on page 38, which reveals that the jeb bush campaign thinks that one of the key metrics people ought to look at to determine jeb's viability as a presidential candidate and is brother's favorability rating. look at the title "gwb," meaning george w. bush, "improving nationwide. and the graph does show george w. bush's favorability rating going up. the issue of george w. bush's popularity is interesting on all sorts of diffe
