i'm jeff glor with a western edition of the broadcast. and president obama warned today america's latest incursion into iraq will not be brief. airstrikes on isis and airdrops for the people they have trapped began yesterday. they will likely continue now for months. tonight, late word of four u.s. airstrikes, this time targeting isis armored personnel carriers. the isis militant are members of the sunni branch of islam, at war not just with iraq's shiite majority but also with other ethnic and religious minorities including kurds, christians and yazidis. their ultimate goal is an islamic state in the heart of the middle east. holly williams is inside erbil tonight. >> reporter: american f/a-18 fighter jets are flying over iraq once again, this time targeting isis militants. the aim is to help kurdish soldiers, the only force on the ground in northern iraq still doing battle with the islamic extremists. the kurdish fighters retreated this week after isis seized more towns and captured iraq's biggest dam. there are now fears the militants

jeff ranieri is tracking these storms. is iselle still packing a punch, jeff? >> most certainly is. we know a lot of you have interests there, so we want to give you the forecasted position and wind speeds for both storms. julio, winds at 105 miles per hour, currently iselle at 80 miles per hour. but you're going to see here iselle is quickly on a clip here towards the hawaiian island chain. right now, winds have gusted in the past 30 minutes here as high as 45 miles per hour on kona, hilo 24, lanai picking up 46. what's the track and intensity of this storm system? it is expecting a landfall here tonight. thursday at 8:00 p.m. puts this just offshore hawaii time for landfall. it may actually weaken to a tropical storm just before landfall with winds at 70 miles per hour. moves across the big island, then it moves south of maui, honolulu, and kauai throughout friday evening. then saturday, we'll be done with that storm system, but again we have a second round, hurricane julio. the most important thing to know about this storm system, not a direct hit. storm track keeps this off to t

chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking both hurricanes. jeff? >> with so much data it can be confusing. we want to break it down. we are tracking julio. it is the farthest away from hawaii. winds at 105 miles per hour. iselle is the closer storm. expected to make landfall tonight. winds of 80 miles per hour. we will get you into the winds. they are increasing with that storm system just offshore of the big island. winds anywhere from 20 to 40 miles per hour from hilo over towards lanei. here is the most important data if you have plans there or you have family. this is the forecast track. you can see tonight just offshore for landfall at 8:00 with winds at 70 miles per hour. making landfall late this etching across the big island. that will take the hardest hit. then moving to the south, at least the center of the storm for maui, honolulu, and also kauai. the outer band will lash the areas but it will be an all day event here for friday. once we get past friday we're going to move on to the next storm, julio. i think the biggest thing to focus i

abc's senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny joins me. jeff, what does this mean for u.s. action in syria, where isis is also gaining ground? >> reporter: good evening, rebecca. the white house and pentagon say there is a significant break through with the air strikes in iraq. but one u.s. official tells me it's like putting out a brush fire in the broader fight against isis. the question still facing the president, whether he can make the case for expanding military action in syria. congress of course is very skeptical. and even members of his cabinet are divided over whether limited military effort could be successful here. but this is a top agenda item as the president travels to europe for a nato summit. he is trying to build a coalition in the region for possible expansion of the military fight in syria. rebecca. >> a lot on his plate. jeff, thank you. >>> and that isis threat is fuelling a refugee crisis in the region, millions of syrians fleeing their country. many of them to camps in lebanon. our cameras are right there, david muir and our team on the syrian border

jeff, what can you tell us? >> right now the storm system has been weakening over the past 24 hours. it has winds at 75 miles per hour, making this a minimal category 1 storm. and at the current track, again, the big island is expecting the largest hit from the storm system. you can see we are expecting it to make landfall just south of hilo. likely at the hawaiian volcanos national park. anywhere from 11:00 hour to 1:00 a.m. and again, this is expected to continue to move inland with the strongest impact right across the big island. as we get a look at the forecast track, what you're going to see as we head throughout friday's forecast, it hangs on across the big island through 5:00 a.m. and then as it exits, the center of the storm will be south of maui, south of honolulu and south of kauai. those areas will get lashed with wind and also some rain. but the worst of it again will stay offshore at this point. and that's going linger all the way through friday night. and then once that passes, we've got that seco

, jeff rosenburg of black rock. i think we kind of know why bonds rose in price down in yield today and in prior days but let's move the film forward into next week. what do you expect and specifically, what do you expect out of the jackson hole conference where ms. yellen and several bankers will be? >> it's been a general conversation so far talking about bonds and talking about stocks, but what we're not talking about is really which bonds have benefits and the key here is, you know, historically when investors think about flight to quality, that benefits a short erma tourer maturity bo. the flows are going into the long curve because of zero interest rates and a flight to quality in the front end of the curve. the move is on the back end. what do we expect next week? it's hard to predict what is going to happen in ukraine. any alleviation of the concern, you'll see some of this back end, long er maturity come off little bit as you relief some of that flight to quality bid that we saw. that depends on what happen

nbc bay area news. >>> jeff has more on the two systems headed toward hawaii. let's get a check of the forecast. jeff joins us now. >> yeah, you can see currently here, again, two storm systems back-to-back on the satellite loop. very impressive. iselle is beginning to weaken a little bit. but you can see how strong julio is at this point. we'll do it storm by storm. we'll get you the first one right now, that is iselle. a category 1 storm, winds at 90 miles per hour. right now 770 miles east-southeast of honolulu, hawaii. there has been a very important forecast change for this storm system, prior forecast model runs had this going over all of the island chain of hawaii. but with the latest update, what you're going to see as it approaches the big island here by thursday 8:00 p.m. for landfall, winds at 75 miles per hour, instead of pushing over all the islands, it takes it just a little bit to the south. that's a better scenario if you still have to head that way, because you have vacation there. it looks like it's going to be south of honolulu by friday morn
