jeff paul is with us now live in southern israel. ful moment for a certain number of families at least. >> reporter: yeah. and as we get closer to this day ending officially, caps off an extremely e tense time here in israel. it does appear day two of the temporary ceasefire is holding and all parties are appearing to hold up to their parts of agreement. now, this delay came in part due to what hamas said was israel not holding up its side of the bargain. they were upset with how many trucks, aid a trucks were making it to northern gaza. they also took issue with the types of prisoner that israel was releasing, that they were holding. israel saying quite the opposite, that they were living up to their part of the bargain, and it was hamas who wasn't releasing the hostages. here's what we know about the hostages. as you said, jonathan, 13 israelis, 4 foreign nationals, previous thought to be 7 foreign nationals. and there is a tense feeling here on the ground because as the israeli government has said so many times, until those groups

issue with aided trucks going into gods that they hand off will move forward but let's go back to jeff pauluthern israel. jeff it's close to 10:00 p.m. and there. has there been any change at all in the activity near you? are you seeing any movement? >> not near where we are. jpre-just watching the live cams from the rafah crossing which is where the hostages will cross into egypt. we are not seeing any movement to bring the camera much different than yesterday so, so many resources out there in a ay fanfare of people out there. but, as we know we are thinking is going to be 13 israelis, seven foreign nationals. from an israeli security standpoint they have long said that nothing is guaranteed until it happens. that feeling was happening yesterday until the very first 13 israelis across back into israel. today that feeling is amplified by these delays heard hamas and said israel is not living up to its side of the agreement. they take issue with the amount of aid reaching northern gaza. they also say the types of prisoners, how long they have been serving they are the ones most senior who s

lucas tomlinson is in nantucket, massachusetts, with the president, but let's begin with jeff paul. s in southern israel right now. jeff. >> reporter: yeah, jon, a very tense day here in israel, but the second day of the hamas-israel temporary ceasefire appears to be holding. it did get off to a rocky start. severe delays in this second batch of hostages released, and that's in part because hamas accused israel of not holding up to their side of the agreement. they said that not enough aid trucks were making their way from the border into northern gaza. they also took issue with exactly who was being released from israeli prisons. on the other hand, you had the israeli government saying they were actually holding up their end and it was hamas who was holding back these hostages. but at the end of the day, qatari, egyptians and even some u.s. negotiators all got together, figured it out. here we are on, entering our third day of this tense ceasefire, and they did, in fact, release the group of hostages. now, we understand from some of the images we're seeing this group of hostages, th

first we go to jeff paul. jeff, what can you tell us? >> gillian, we've been moved around a bit.tel aviv right now. the israeli gift confirmed that they had a list of names who was coming on. they didn't want the names out there. they're in the process of calling the families of the hostages to let them know who is on it and who is not. it's a good sign to see that happening once again today. it really speaks to sort of the bittersweet nature of this whole ordeal. you've got 13 names again on that list today. that means there are more than 200 people that are not on that list. while there's a huge sense of relief for the families that have hostages coming back to their arms, it's a tough thing to think about that there's so many that are still being held in gaza. early this morning, 7:00 a.m., cease fire is a critical element of this agreement. aid is now coming in to gaza. things like fuel and cooking gas, things that they need to stay alive, hours later, we saw the first group of the hostages. 13 people. we know among that group, there are 4 kids with ages ranging from two year

we have jeff paul, our own jeff paul, live in southern israel with the latest. what can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, larry, we are just learning that the israeli forces discovered the body of one of the people who was abducted by hamas back on october 7th. the idf confirming the 65-year-old was discovered in a structure near shiva hospital. that is of course where israeli forces right now have been searching the last couple days searching around that last hospital complex. israeli commandoes are searching the each of the hospital buildings floor to floor. we see images of guns and military equipment they say was found inside of the hospital. the idf say they found a tunnel near the hospital. israeli forces say that alone is evidence that hamas was operating within the hospital complex. hamas calls it a weak story that isn't true. the hospital staff says every minute the israeli forces quote, put the hospital under occupation, the chances of more patients dying only increases. israeli's defense minister gallant says they remain focused rooting out hamas from g

jeff paul, thank you very much. retired navy captain, a former pentagon official and now a senior fellow at the heritage foundation joins me now. this is a tricky situation. a four-day cease-fire. this means they can get humanitarian aid, 50 hostages released. here is the concern, obviously. you give hamas an opportunity to rearm themselves and what happens to the other 200 hostages? there were 240 hostages total. they only get 50 as release. israel is only getting 50 hostages released. meantime the palestinians are expecting 150 prisoners in exchange. does this seem like a fair and smart deal to you? >> well, i can't really say if it's fair. certainly doesn't seem like it because the number of israelis that are being released and maybe even three americans is basically a 3-1 ratio. fair maybe not. smart also i think is questionable. there is a history and tactic behind hamas taking hostages. this was their intent on october 7th when they went in to take hostages so that they could then slowly released them and try

jeff paul live for us in tel aviv. jeff thank you. bring in nathan sales former ambassador at large and coordinateder for counter terrorism and garrett marine corps operations. gentlemen welcome to you both. to you first nathan i want to talk about the deal because hamas agreed to a 3-5 day pause in the firing to release 50 hostages and wanted to work in some palestinian prisoners israel said no. your thoughts? >> well, it sure sounds like the israelis took a hard look at the proposal and concluded that its not going to be beneficial on balance for them. a 3-5 day pause, a lot can happen in 3-5 days. that gives hamas opportunities time to regroup, rearm and maybe disburse. currently hard to do that when they're under withering fire of israelis. the details of what exactly happened in jerusalem over these negotiations are going to come out over the next hour or day. it will be interesting to see if israelis give us a sense of what was wrong with this deal and what the next turn of the screw is. >> trace: and we're being told these deal

jeff paul is in tel aviv tonight with what comes next. jeff. >> yeah, gillian, we are learning tonight on top of the 13 hostages freed today, an additional 13 could be released tomorrow. but the mood here on the ground in israel is still very bittersweet. knowing that are more than 200 hostages who have yet to go home. >> a moment nearly seven weeks in the making. buses leaving gaza through the rafah crossing entering egypt carrying 24-hamas held hostages who were r. now free. 13 israelis, 10 thai citizens and one person from the philippines freed after spending 48 days in captivity. among the israelis released, four kids, three mothers, and six elderly women. it was the first round the hostage releases in what is expected to span four days, eventually totaling 50 israeli women and children. each day a pause in the fighting. and negotiators have said there could be additional days of pauses added for every 10 additional israelis released going forward. >> during the cease-fire, the idf has been preparing for the next stage of fighting and

but first, correspondent jeff paul joins us live from southern israel. jeff. >> kevin, with the original plan to release the hostages pushed back until tomorrow, it's obviously a very anxious time here on the ground in israel. we are also learning that the israeli government is now in the process of calling each of the hostages' family to let them know who is on the list and who is not. now, under this qatari brokered deal, temporary ceasefire will start at 7:00 a.m. local time. then we are expecting hamas to release the first 13 hostages starting tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. local time. in total, 50 women and children will be released over a period of 4 to 5 days, in exchange, israel will then release 150 palestinian prisoners. during each of these days that hostages are released, there will be pauses in the fighting. the breaks in combat are coming at a critical time when civilians in gaza are running desperately low on the essentials to live. the pauses are expected to allow more aid to flow into gaza, food, clean water and medical supplies are now in critica

jeff paul joins us right now from tel aviv. eff. >> yeah, weeks of tense negotiations finally with some results here in tel aviv. this meeting with israeli government officials where they debated whether or not to approve this deal. that took more than six hours. they ended around 3:00, 3:30 in the morning here local time. under this agreement, you are going to have not only a pause in the fighting but this release of hostages which you have got to think about for all the families of the hostages it gives them a bit of hope that there is some good news on the horizon. now, under this brokered deal it involved the u.s., qatar and egyptians. israel will get 50 hostages released to them from hamas. these will be women and children. in exchange israel will release 150 palestinian prisoners. the hostages, as we understand, will be released in groups of about 10 to 12 over a span of four to five days. each of those days when hostages are released, there will be a pause in the fighting. prime minister benjamin has been under increasing

. >> griff: jeff paul kicks things off for us in southern israel. >> the israeli security forces here saying the first batch of hostages likely won't be coming out until friday at the earliest. it speaks to the complicated and dell indicate nature of the ongoing negotiations. because no hostages are coming out. no pause in the war especially for soldiers like the ones at the military base in southern israel. under the original agreement, between israel and hamas, they were going to probably have the first batch of hostages come out as soon as today. that would have been 10 to 12 people and more the following day totaling up to 50 women and children. now, israel would release 150 palestinian prisoners and agree to multiple pauses in the war. the temporary cease-fire allows aid to come into the civilians of gaza in desperate need of food, water and medical supplies as the war continues. negotiators in qatar say they're working to create the appropriate conditions for a pause and a swap of hostages and prisoners. idf says their mission in gaza to root out hamas will not come to an end. >

so jeff paul, we begin with jeff paul in southern israel. when could we see innocent civilians freed? >> that is the million dollar question. we're watching any possible developments that could come out of this israeli government meeting going on right now. we should point out this was previously unscheduled. that might give you an idea of how possibly close they could be to approving a deal that could return hostages back to israel. they are expected to vote on that tonight. this of course all hinges on hamas approving the deal as well. earlier in the day, the chief of hamas put out a statement saying that they are close to reaching a truce. as far as the specific details of the potential deal, that could shift. as it stands, we're thinking 50 israeli hostages would be released. local media here in israel reporting it would include 30 kids, eight moms and 12 women. in exchange, hamas would receive a group of palestinian prisoners and a multiday pause in fighting. the u.s., egypt and qatar have always been involved in the tense negotiations

let's get the latest from jeff paul in sderot. jeff? >> the fighting is going late in to the night along the israel gaza border. we've been standing here in sderot for the last couple hours. you can sear the booms of the outgoing artillery as israeli forces continue to hit their targets in northern gaza. this is what the it looks like a short time ago. you can see the flares lighting up the sky. most of the intense fighting in an around gaza city's main hospital, the shifa hold, an important strong hold used by hamas. the idf targeted the area as they moved deeper in to the dense neighborhoods of northern gaza. the heavy fighting is yet again forcing thousands more to pack up what they can and flee south. 80,000 civilians moved south today utilizing the six-hour evacuation corridor on gaza's main highway. israeli defense minister explained today why they're so focused on striking near the shifa hospital. >> those terrorists that are staying in the basements, underneath the shifa hospital tonight can hear the thundering sound of tank cha

jeff paul is live in southern israel9 with the latest there. well, yeah, jon, despite there being talks about a potential hostage a deal in the works, as you can probably hear in the background, no signs of the fighting stopping anytime if soon. from our vantage point right here in southern israel, we continue to hear boom withs from the outgoing artillery that us legal is still firing into northern gaza is. and that is where the idf says they've obtained some new cc-tv footage from the shifa hospital. a military spokesperson says video shows two different foreign nationals being forcibly taken to the hospital by hamas on october 7th. the idf if says this is proof hamas was using shifa hospital on the day of the terror attack. they also released new images of a tunnel israeli forces say runs underneath the shifa hospital complex. that's where it appears to be a deep staircase that then leads to the entrance of a tunnel shaft including a blast-proof door and a firing hole. but the ongoing fighting in and around al-shifa has all but forced the ho

larry: jeff paul, thank you for the update, we appreciate it. please be safe. boy this hostage deal is there a hostage deal in the works? is there a cease-fire that will be part of it? where did this story come from? it came from left field. let's bring in benny avni, veteran correspondent and foreign editor at "the new york sun." benny, thank you. i don't know, first of all is there a deal? is a cease-fire three days, five days, the hostage, 70, 50 and where did this deal come from? because, benny, look it, i don't want to second guess and so forth but this is not exactly what prime minister netanyahu is messaging. >> well, i think the problem has always been at least publicly that the entire pressure on making the deal is on israel rather than on where it belongs which is on qatar. qatar is the mediator and, if you hear the u.s. talk they always praise qatar in its diplomatic efforts while they're saying israel us do more to add to the, to the efforts in humanitarian efforts and all that and, send more humanitarian goods to gaza, in order to hasten the deal.

jeff paul in southern israel with the latest on the war there. jeff? >> yeah, neil. from our vantage point here in southern israel, we continue to hear that outgoing artillery that israel is still firing in to gaza. all of that happening as israel forces in and around the al shifa hospital. they found weapons and military equipment and proof that hamas is operating inside gaza's biggest hospital. after entering the hospital complex, soldiers engaged with militants killing them. for days, israeli forces have encircled the al shifa hospital. the idf said they started their search early this morning. hat, however, released a statement to fox news says the idf was swarming the hospital and putting the lives of the vulnerable civilians at risk. the idf released other video showing soldiers delivering incubators, baby food and medical supplies to the hospital. today prime minister netanyahu visited with soldiers saying that they still haven't completed their mission. >> there's no place in gaza that we will not reach. there's no hiding, no shelter for the hamas murders. we

jeff paul is live on the ground for us in tel aviv. jeff, what are you hearing about time lines?ll, yeah, trace, we in fact just got some information that the israeli government now has a list of names of the next group of hostages they expect to be released tomorrow, signaling that this deal between israel and hamas has, in fact, been extended, at least beside a day. again this is all day to day very tense negotiations going on. but this is footage from tonight of some of the 11 hostages that were just released, back here on israeli soil being chopered over to one of the area hospitals to get checked out. here's what we know about this group tonight. two mothers involved in there, in that release, and nine kids. the youngest, twin three year old girls. just the day before 14 israelis made the same journey and joined 26 other israelis released in the previous days. they're all now getting care and treatment after spending roughly seven weeks likely exclusively in the darkness of those hamas tunnels. over the next two days we could see yet more hostages being released after a qata

. >> sandra: jeff paul is on the ground live in southern israel to kick things off this hour, jeff. >> yeah, sandra, and it is a critical time right now in this war. we are standing by and watching closely what happens during this meeting involving israeli government officials. they could potentially vote to approve a hostage deal at the same time that is all happening the chief of hamas earlier today saying they are "close to a truce" now exactly what that would look like, that could be developing as the minutes tick on, the hours tick on, during these tense negotiations. but as we understand, roughly 50 israeli hostages, women and children, would be exchanged for a multi-day pause. it could get aid into gaza, included fuel, food and clean water. yesterday some of the families of the hostages met with israeli war cabinet members. demanding not only answers as to what's going on but want the israeli government to act now to bring all the hostages home. but the idf told fox news israel is trying to negotiate with a violent terrorist group so right now there are no guarantees. >> until
