the makings for a nice day, meteorologist jeff smith with a first look at our morning's forecast. >> we're not going to get a lot of sunshine today but temperatures will probably still get up to record levels. we still have fog out there. visibility is improving over what they were earlier this morning. a live look over toward midtown manhattan from our camera and in astoria, queens. the fog losting for another hour expiring 10:00 a.m. for much of the tri-state area. visibility is now still down to .3 miles.

meteorologist jeff smith is tracking it all, of course. he joins us now with a first look at the weather. >>> sandra, we came within 2 degrees of a record high, getting up to 61. clouds stopped the temperatures from rising too much. ironically, we talk about the near-record warmth and we have a winter weather advisory issued for areas north and west of the city for tomorrow night, right through tuesday morning for our next storm expected to come on in. in the meantime, we have rain issues to deal with overnight tonight, mainly during the evening hours. you can see on the radar picture a couple of light showers moving into northwestern parts of new jersey, parts of the mid-hudson valley. a juicier batch of rain over central pennsylvania, shifting off to the east during the next several hours. basically between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m., we get some showers moving from west to east across the tri-state. 8:00 p.m. temperature, down to about 55. colder air moves in from the north. we're down to 40 by 7:00 in the morning. even down near freezing in th

[ laughter ] >>> meteorologist jeff smith is here with a wrapup to two cold days, right? >> couldn't be any more we got 70-degree warmth. we paid for it with rainfall. not completely sunny. we're probably going to be easily breaking a record on christmas. right now, we check out the view of midtown from our camera near queens. temperature of 41, winds coming in from the southwest at 3. winds will freshen up into the day tomorrow from the southwesterly direction. that will bring in warmer air. it will also bring in moisture in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere, hence the cloud cover. next seven hours, temperatures plateauing, not going down too quickly. 40 by 8:00. down to 39 by midnight. gradually increasing cloud cover in that south and southwest wind coming in at 4 to 8 miles per hour. highs today across much of the region, in the lower to perhaps even middle 40s. 44 up in newark. got up to 43 at marstown. so far this month, we're about 11.7 degrees above average and we're easily going to get our warmest december on record, especially after you see this forecas

. >> we are back with jeff smith, ,uthor -- author of this book "mr. smith goes to prison." how did you end up in prison? >> in 2004, i was running in congress in a 10 way primary. -- the front runner father had been governor and his mother had been senator. we were way behind, but over the course of the campaign, we put together a nice operation. we were building momentum. about a month before election day, a man approached to my campaign aides and said that he a postcardut out highlighting his dismal attendance record. instead of telling my aides that they should be going with outside parties, i said, i don't want to know the details. they asked if i should give them the voting record? -- don'ton't tell the ask me what to do. if you bestow, i had a press conference and highlighted his voting record. day, it did come out, saying the same things i said before. i sign a false affidavit denying and knee -- denying any advance knowledge about that postcard. five years later, that postcard got picked up by the feds -- the guy who did that postcard got picked up by the feds. when
